I knew Weller had turned into an A1 dick when he appeared at the 1984 (or thereabouts) Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade on a float lyp synching one of his wanna-be Motown singles. truly cringe inducing.
Wow, I'm totally out of the loop being from the USA and living in Kuwait for a long time. If I had known Foxton was doing this I may have flown to England just to check it out! Hope I see a show of his or Weller someday in the states! Thanks for posting this news clip.
I seen The Jam twice in their heyday,to me Bruce Foxton was the reason I went to those concerts. One of the best bassists in the business and I look forward to seeing From The Jam in the Cavern this year.Paul Weller not being there doesnt change anything for me,he left and changed to do what he wanted,Bruce stayed with what he is the best at.
@ynotyrrebrac Yeah I bought Foxton's studio release from the early 80's after the Jam and it was laughable. Big disappointment. Still, watching some clips of them now they sound really good live!
I find Bruce's comments at 1:45 just laughable. He states if Weller were to return, there'd be a bit of a problem, now that they've got Russell on board (and some bloke named Dave). If you think the reason From The Jam exists is something other than money, put down your hash pipe now. A Weller return would increase the cash flow ten-fold, if not more. (IMHO). Foxton & Buckler couldn't find a bus fast enough to throw Russell & Dave under if Paul would come back...but not gonna happen...
i guess you have to respect paul's wishes not to participate, he can't sing the old tunes anymore like he used to, at least theres no resentment between them.
Paul Weller writes great solo albums like Stanley rd, 22 Dreams to name just two. let alone The Style Council great songs! Foxton has done what exactly, fuck all! lol still stuck in 1982 gutted Weller has left him in the shit! how many Jam songs did Bruce write, lol... Weller is the Jam without him its a tribute band. why doesn"t Foxton write some solo number 1 albums, because he hasn"t the talent!
Paul Weller has only got his number 1 albums because.. it's Paul Weller. And in the last 10 years, what have we had in the charts? Lady Gaga, The Fratellis, Beyonce, Scouting For Girls? Not much opposition for ol' Weller, is it? Get your head out of Paul's arse. He's a legend - we all know that. But you don't have to slate Bruce Foxton's writing abilities. Go to a FTJ gig and you'll see what Bruce brings to the band. Enthusiasm and his 6-fingered left hand that he plays bass with.
Thanks for posting this. Last time I saw Bruce he was playing bass for Stiff Little Fingers at a gig in France. He's a good spokesman for The Jam now that Paul isn't interested.
i know everyone sceptical ,as i was but when i saw them they were amazing fuck weller anyway he,s a miserable sod so let bruce and rick let everyone show how great the jam were
I think its bizzare how Foxton and Buckler decided to reform the jam, i agree with weller that life is a bout moving on, why reform? I also find the fact that weller wrote practically all of the jam songs apart from david watts and news of the world which were wrote by foxton, if anyone should be singing the jam songs it should be weller, even if he is the stuck up prick you lot claim he is.
I would have loved to have seen The Jam back in their heyday, but alas I didn't. I agree that their legendary status is intact and shouldn't cheapened by some "cash-in tour". Best of luck to the three of them in whatever they do.
I don't think they should go under the name of the Jam.. Its not the jam without Weller thats like the beatles reforming with only Ringo.. or the smiths reforming without Morrissey. good luck to them never the less.
The whole "Jam" is better than the parts. With that, I love Bruce & Rick and embrace their efforts to bring the beautiful memory of The Jam to another generation. Foxton was my Mentor Hero, first Bass line I learned was Modern World- 25 years later his style is still part of my whole. Love
Paul weller is one of the greatest songwriters of our time but musically he has not done anything of note since his time in the jam. And any time i see him covering jam songs with his band it just does not have the same feel, this is because of the arrangments by rick and bruce and Paul, true. Bruce and Rick and Paul were the best at doing these songs and Paul should know this. Bruce and Rick have never been given the acknowledgment they deserve.
"weller has not done anything of note since his time in the jam", you must have been living on the moon for the last 25 years mate. From the Jam sound like just another tribute band singing Jam songs, 90% written by Weller lets not forget.
I agree, but nobody can play those jam songs like Bruce, Rick and paul... and anyway his covers c.d was the biggest pile of shite i ever heard.. very bland, like watching a sunday group in the local boozer. Old men dancing as if they are slowly kicking cigarette stubs away with their feet . Makes me long for something a bit more exiting. Something like setting sons or all mod cons. Am i alone in this?
as much as I love the Jam, and I did enjoy the performance at Sheffield Octogon! (Where I broke my foot...), seeing fat, bald, 40 year old blokes jumping round with their shirts off while singing Jam songs, I can't help but find it incredably embarrassing, if I saw my dad doing that I wouldn't be best pleased, thankfully he stood to the side in shame of the other people.
spot on performance though, but obviously, it would be fantastic with Paul!
I couldn't agree more. I mean I know Weller does a couple of jam songs on tour but he did write most of them. If Bruce just did the ones he wrote, they wouldn't have a very long set would they? lol but in all seriousness, they split up in 1982 at their peak and they should leave it there and be remembered as rock gods, not middle aged men building a pension fund. hey, do you think that's why they did it?
yeahh without a doubt, it's kind of killed the Jam for me really, well, only a bit! haha but either way, Wellers songs should stay as Wellers, he has been in touch with Bruce though hasn't he? Because Bruce's wife was ill
Paul Weller is a miserable cunt, if he smiled it would crack his face, he sold the other members of the group down the river. Rick and Bruce are decent blokes.
errr noo paul will never return, i mean look at Paul, wat a great guy, bruce u look worn out, i think u need a rest. Even tho i bet ur good live, well done for that.
Bloody amazing. I saw them Friday night in Anaheim, California. They were fantastic, I never got the chance to see the old Jam. This was what I have been waiting for. Thanks for coming to the US. THere were plenty of Brits and loads of appreciative locals.
Oh Hell Yes! Rick & Bruce really held it down. While it would be cool to see all three of these cats together again, the chances are about as remote the Beatles playing the Hollywood Bowl again.
Saw FTJ at Cambridge Corn Exchange on Sunday 16th December - absolutely brilliant. The atmosphere was incredible - fantastic tight performance played with real passion and they looked like they enjoyed the gig as much as the crowd did. Russell and Dave were spot on and I agree with st0ner65 - it was like 1979 for me when I saw them at Aylesbury with The Vapours - remember them? If you didn't get to see the original Jam live go and see FTJ - you'll be very glad you did!!
Having seen the farewell gig at Brighton 25 years ago, I was unsure about what to expect from new vocalist Russell Hastings, but I needn't hae worried, he was absolutely superb. I saw FTJ at Tunbridge Wells & Brighton this year & the atmosphere was great both times. "We are the Mods, we are the Mods, we are, we are, we are The Mods!"
As Bruce so rightly says in the book 'The Jam - Our Story'; "There were actually three people in The Jam. And two weren't Paul Weller".
I have had the pleasure to have a few beers with Bruce, Rick, Russell & Dave this summer and they are four of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet.
I well pleased for the guys in From The Jam that they have played to so many people this year.
Sorry but I can't speak much French and I don't understand your question. I have unfortunately forgotten all the French I learned at school 30 years ago!
Thanks to all the other FTJ fans that have posted such positive comments about Bruce, Rick and From The Jam. I hope you enjoyed seeing them in concert as much as I did at Plymouth.
Went to the gig last night (29/11/07) at Glenrothes. They were absolutely superb with Hastings doing very well in the "Weller" role. Recommend any Jam fan to get tickets for remaining gigs - very worthwhile
