german language has a great cultural layer, background. in 18-19 centuries the fundamental part of european intellectual legacy was produced by german-speaking philosophers, mathemacians and economists.
Still today the access to much of these intellectual treasures is obtained via german.
German sounds always funny when american people speak it :D
But I'm proud of my language, and that other people want to learn it. It's a beautiful language, and a beautiful land (well, of course not the politic...).
The Video is really good - and your German sounds great :)
The Germans as largest American ancestral group is a myth. There is a huge undercount of British ancestry (English, Scottish, & Scots-Irish). British surnames dominate the U.S. census rolls. Otherwise, this video is great. I appreciate it as a German language learner, a fan of Germany, and German culture.
@JohnRhysMusician The USA was founded by Brits and consisted mostly of Ex-Brits until the migrations of the late 19th and early 20th centuries that brought over most other ethnicities, so I'm assuming they don't tend to count the 'root' group as a contender. I still agree though that I wouldn't have considered the germans to be the next largest group, but there was a large exodus from Germany to the USA between 1933 and 1945, if you get where I'm at... Them Judaic folks.
@FatBlackFrancis Right, but there are about 5-6 million Jews in the US and probably about 2/3s or 3/4s are of German-Jewish ancestry, the rest are of Ashkenazi (Russian/Polish, etc.), Swiss, French, and Israeli descent. My point is there are not enough of them to make up the numbers of Americans who claim they have German ancestry.
Great I'm Mexican and I live in Mexico City and I speak German, English, Italian and of course Spanish. I must to admit German is soo much fun after you know English.

Mozarts entire family was German and Mozart also considered himself a German. Mozarts birthplace, Salzburg, was part of the holy Roman empire which was area of what is Germany today.
1, Salzburg was an archdiocese in the Roman empire.
2, austria was also part of the holy roman empire (which was bigger than the germany we know today) but I would not call it "part of germany" either
btw the fact that the area of his birthplace was part of the HRE has nothing to do with the topographic situation nowadays. it's true germany is NOW located where a great part of the HRE used to be but salzburg is not part of that.
@Yaayzy Austrians ARE Germans muck like north Korea and south Korea are one. greedy polititians and elite class have taught you to hate each other(for their own personal gains) but the fact is not only you are same people but you have stood for each other in times of need . p.s i am a Pakistani so i am not biased in any ways i love all germans(including austrians, swiss people of Luxembourg and liethstien(sp?)) for the things they have done for science and technology and also for arts and music.
@Yaayzy i never said you hate Germans,i am saying your media, school text books ,newspaper e.t.c all teach you to hate each other , but you are the same .language is not the only thing that is in common between you all but also your culture , cuisine ,you look like each other, you have same traditions. and the traits of germans (like scientific mindedness and perfectionism) can be found in all german speaking europe(i know we cant generalize 100% but can say perfectionists are more common there.)
I've missread the thing with hate, sorry bout that. And there are indeed many things people of german speaking countries have in common, i don't doubt that. Anyway especially in germany there are many many different cultures and sublanguages like here in Austria. Viennese people and northern german people for example have no tradition alike and can't be compared in that way.
Oh my... all these Hitler-comments are making me sad. =(
I am a german girl and I always have to deal with Hitler while talking with americans. I mean... WTF? I am 21 - not 91. I've nothing to do with that Nazi-stuff. And before you prejudge germans, just look who's talking. Look at your own past. Racism is not a german issue, it's a worldwide problem - and we all have to get rid of it.

Some German words in English and some English words in German are enriching both languages! The problem is actually an overload of English words in German, in particular those words that already exist in German or that are even not understood by English speakers. Picking missing words from other languages has always been done and makes languages living and richer. As long as there is no unbalanced flow that makes one language endangered and the other "kulturimperialistisch", its ok.
@NathanWin But when he was born, Austria was a part of the holy roman empire of german nations... a part of germany and it is not important from where he is, it's the language which counts
oh yes i love it lol, i am not german but i love germany when i was 12, there are no schools here that knows german , so i learn by ME and still learning lol :)

I speak both English and German(native) fluently. am offering you to teach / help you learn German through Skype for free. Just let me know if you are interested.
I like the message of this video, just a little corny and only the end text had (some) good reasons to learn German, the beginning was pretty useless. Regardless, it's still a great language! And don't listen to these haters, they never had good grammar skills to begin with, so of course it's difficult for them to learn German. Oh and FYI, I grew up speaking English but I also speak very fluent Espanol and German(Dutch)! English is by far the most effective, but German is the funnest to speak.
Ich hätte nie gedacht, dass die Liste deutscher Wörter im Amerikanischen so groß ist. The list of german words used in america on the eng. wiki is bigger the one in the ger. wiki...
I am very thankful to have german taught as a foreign language in my high school. The more I learn about Germany the more I love. Maybe one day I'll get sehr gut at german and move to Germany and meet my German family.
HILFE! my school is going to be getting rid of Deutsch class because "not enough people signed up." FYI, my class is a class of 20. However, the Freshmen class has only about 7 people. So next year, there will be no German 1-and the year after, no german 2 and so on. I am trying to convince the Admin at my schule to change this. Please help me with ideas or videos. Vielen Dank.
But it´s more effective to learn English to get rid of your weak spots in this language, instead of starting to learn another (by far more dificult) language, which cost you a lot of time and effort to be proficient in it.
I think it´s better to concentrate on one language.
Moreover German is hard, you cannot learn it without being interested in it.
my interest in german comes from studying germany's history, particularly it's military i.e panzers and the ss and it's politics bismarck, kaizer and hitler...
Im an English native and Im learning and studying german as my second language and I know a few words off by heart because I watch, listen, and study german all the time. I love listening to german TV gives a great boost to learning it:))
I'm about to spend two years in Germany as an LDS (Mormon) Missionary. I can't wait to learn the language and be able to speak it fluently! I took 4 years in high school (I'm a freshman in college now), but I don't understand enough to even be close to fluent. It will be sweet to finally understand my German Teacher, and maybe work in Germany when I'm older.
My first language is Polish and it's a Slavic language but it's amazing how much vocabulary in Polish actually comes from German. I could write a whole paragraph in Poish using only german words (exluding words such as "and")
I´m sorry to disagree with most of the comments posted here, but German is not exactly an advisable language to study if you want to make yourself understood around this great big world. Its intricate, complex and "unfriendly" grammar renders German as an impractical language ...You´d better focus your efforts on learning Spanish or French, which are more widespread than German.
German and English are both West Germanic languages and actually have more in common with each other than English does with French or Spanish. There isn't much about German that makes it any worse than any other popular European language
Yes, I agree with you on that issue. German is of course more closely related to English than to other Romanic tongues like French or Spanish, but these languages have a wider sphere of influence in the world beyond any doubt. German is an interesting language indeed, but only useful if you´re going to settle down in a German-speaking country, like Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein or Germany itself. Outside those boundaries, the German language is a mere anecdote.
@MrPhidelius i have to disagree with you there.... to me, german to me is a lot easier than french... the only part one might find challenging is the pronounciations but once you've mastered that it shouldn't be too hard... plus i've recently learned that german is one of the languages that english is based on...
What would be the best career and practical reasons to learn German? And is it true that Germans expect you to master the language expertly or not try at all?
Yes, there are critics and sceptisism about America because of it´s international affairs, but I don´t think Germans generally stand sceptically in front of Americans, because of that. American culture has influenced Germany so much, that it seems to be like a second home to us. TV, market, songs, celebrities from America are often more important or the same as German ones. I don´t see any resistance or general rejection.
I'm german and I'm glad that some americans are willing to speak german , and this video just shows why we need to !! germany just plays a major role in the world! some people think german is to harsh and is an uggly language, and start comparing it with russian but german is a wonderfull language formed by goethe schiller and lots of other writers welll known over the world. German compared to englisch is more peoetry like with lots of images. Go visit germany lots of culure and history await u
@flakelorenz02 Yep I learned German at my high school and me being the avid Rammstein fan that I am, I learned a few phrases and words that wasn't taught in my German class.
@JONML1995 i love German language.. :)... and i really want to learn it.. and i started.. but online... increasing my vocabs, watching stuff about grammar, Rammstein.. :D, reading, listening,.. you know, stuff like that.. :P.. wish me good luck.. xD
@xRUSSIANMEx google translator sucks.. o.0.. you need to translate from German to English to know the meaning then from English to German to know if it is grammarwise correct.. o.0
@GarryLinecker thought you didn't get the essence of the message, if you study German you will elevate your confidence of speaking in english because you can never be a good in German if you didn't even know English therefore mastering German will lead you unknowingly to master English.;)
and Slovakia and the Ukraine. Altogether, between 120 and 140 million Europeans speak German as their first language -more than the number of people in Europe who speak English as their first language. These are some reasons why you should learn German.
Wo spricht man Deutsch? (Where is German spoken?) - Naturally, GErman is spoken in Germany, but it is also spoken in many other countries. German is the official language of Germany, Austria, and Liechtenstein. It is one of four official languages of Switzerland and one of three official languages of Luxembourg and Belgium. German is also spoken in regions of France, Denmark, Italy, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and Russia.
@lemuriavi On 25 February, however, the Nazi interior minister of Brunswick (the Nazis were part of a right-wing coalition governing the state) appointed Hitler as administrator for the state's delegation to the Reichsrat in Berlin.
This appointment made Hitler a citizen of Brunswick. In those days, the states conferred citizenship, so this automatically made Hitler a citizen of Germany as well and thus eligible to run for president.
@dokabernd HITLER WAS GERMAN, II - On 25 February, however, the Nazi interior minister of Brunswick (the Nazis were part of a right-wing coalition governing the state) appointed Hitler as administrator for the state's delegation to the Reichsrat in Berlin.
This appointment made Hitler a citizen of Brunswick. In those days, the states conferred citizenship, so this automatically made Hitler a citizen of Germany as well and thus eligible to run for president.
Though Hitler had left Austria in 1913 and had formally renounced his Austrian citizenship on 7 April 1925, he still had not acquired German citizenship and hence could not run for public office.
This appointment made Hitler a citizen of Brunswick. In those days, the states conferred citizenship, so this automatically made Hitler a citizen of Germany as well and thus eligible to run for president.
forget german. better learn turkish. in about 10-20 years, it will coexist besides german in all germanspeaking countries, or even be the mainlanguage. this is because of the heavy, but necessary muslim-immigration. they keep their language because we fail to integrate them properly.
so, take the hint, do yourself a favor and learn turkish instead of german. it's the future of germany and austria.
pperschke...bitte, that's why King Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, said "I speak Spanish to God, Italian to women, French to men and German to my horse". Cool man. But Germany has produced Lessing, Schiller, Goethe, Beethoven and the greatest musician of all times, JS Bach, my favourite composer. Danke. sd goh (malaysia)
@charlieiscool1000 Maybe, but for me the "american" english is more "clear". For example, I understand american movies a lot easier than movies from england. Because people often have a heavy heavy accent which made it barely possible for me to undertsand one single complete sentence. But once, I have been in London by myself, and THAT english was (in my opinion) very good to understand. So, I don't know what's going wrong in the english movies/films. Maybe, it's often "suburban-english" ;)
@Yingizz25 so ein Unsinn. Deutschland gibts erst seit 1871. learn History! Salzburg belongs to the Austrian cultural sphere. Germany exits since 1871.

HILFE! my school is going to be getting rid of Deutsch class because "not enough people signed up." FYI, my class is a class of 20. However, the Freshmen class has only about 7 people. So next year, there will be no German 1-and the year after, no german 2 and so on. I am trying to convince the Admin at my schule to change this. Please help me with ideas or videos. Vielen Dank.

"Why Learn German?"
To improve our English?
Es ist die falsche Motivation eine Sprache zu lernen, um eine andere besser verstehen zu können.
Leute sollten eine fremde Sprache lernen, wenn sie die Sprache schön finden und gerne sprechen möchten.
MinatoNamikaze 11 months ago
@MinatoNamikaze It doesn't matter if you think its the wrong motive, it still is a very good motive for we who want to perfect English.
ranma763 10 months ago
@ranma763
MinatoNamikaze 10 months ago
my interest in german comes from studying germany's history, particularly it's military i.e panzers and the ss and it's politics bismarck, kaizer and hitler...

GalaxyBeatsMexico 11 months ago
I´m sorry to disagree with most of the comments posted here, but German is not exactly an advisable language to study if you want to make yourself understood around this great big world. Its intricate, complex and "unfriendly" grammar renders German as an impractical language ...You´d better focus your efforts on learning Spanish or French, which are more widespread than German.
MrPhidelius 11 months ago
German and English are both West Germanic languages and actually have more in common with each other than English does with French or Spanish. There isn't much about German that makes it any worse than any other popular European language
madchris17 11 months ago
@madchris17
MrPhidelius 11 months ago
@MrPhidelius also holland, dutch is 80% the same
HHSucre 11 months ago
@MrPhidelius i have to disagree with you there.... to me, german to me is a lot easier than french... the only part one might find challenging is the pronounciations but once you've mastered that it shouldn't be too hard... plus i've recently learned that german is one of the languages that english is based on...

What would be the best career and practical reasons to learn German? And is it true that Germans expect you to master the language expertly or not try at all?
ScopedOUT2 1 year ago
@mkf272

How many people learnt German just because of Rammstein?
I can sort of vouch for that myself as I learnt German at school and listening to Rammstein helped me more.

@flakelorenz02 Yep I learned German at my high school and me being the avid Rammstein fan that I am, I learned a few phrases and words that wasn't taught in my German class.

Though Hitler had left Austria in 1913 and had formally renounced his Austrian citizenship on 7 April 1925, he still had not acquired German citizenship and hence could not run for public office.

forget german. better learn turkish. in about 10-20 years, it will coexist besides german in all germanspeaking countries, or even be the mainlanguage. this is because of the heavy, but necessary muslim-immigration. they keep their language because we fail to integrate them properly.
so, take the hint, do yourself a favor and learn turkish instead of german. it's the future of germany and austria.

the problem today is that most ppl think of English as american which is quite annyong for the proper English speakers who are from England
charlieiscool1000 1 year ago
@charlieiscool1000 Maybe, but for me the "american" english is more "clear". For example, I understand american movies a lot easier than movies from england. Because people often have a heavy heavy accent which made it barely possible for me to undertsand one single complete sentence. But once, I have been in London by myself, and THAT english was (in my opinion) very good to understand. So, I don't know what's going wrong in the english movies/films. Maybe, it's often "suburban-english" ;)

toneub 1 year ago
@toneub
Mozart isn't austrian! He was born in a town called Salzburg. Now, Salzburg belongs to Austria, but at his date of birth it belongs to Germany.
Yingizz25 1 year ago
@Yingizz25 so ein Unsinn. Deutschland gibts erst seit 1871. learn History! Salzburg belongs to the Austrian cultural sphere. Germany exits since 1871.
toneub 1 year ago
@toneub
Yingizz25 1 year ago
