I prefer Emil Gilel's version better which is a more rigid, taut, monasteric, and dark mood. This playing is not really going anywhere because it lacks imagination and soul..
I agree! This pianists lacks a soul and has no imagination. But that doesn't mean he doesn't offer something to this piece, worth listening to. I actually rather like his lighthearted take on this otherwise dexedrinious piece.
I've not heard him play Beethoven before. His Chopin & Schumann playing was peerless. He had an uncanny knack of making difficult works seem easy. Often Beethoven's Sonatas are played as vulgar, bravura trifles, which omit their amazing power, feeling & emotion. Rhythm is the key in Beethoven, important yes but he always demands more from a pianist. This Sonata,#3 of Op 2, is a deliberate piece of showmanship for the youthful B, to brag, but is often ruined by reckless playing, eg. its finale.
at least we gave the world composers, pianists, musicians and many other artists in all arts..italian is the language of music, and I m proud he was Italian; but michelangeli left italy for other reasons and not for success, he was already famous at that time..
This is the best interpretation i found so far. favorited

Beethoven's early sonatas are really mozartian! Great rendition by Michelangeli. I find him the best interpreter of these pieces.
