A good enough rendition - JG goes astray when she applies her wide vibrato to a lyric that is essentially conversational - the singing gets in the way of the song...Its tough for a super star to get past her stardom and leave us with a performance that is ALL art...
Tough for us to forget we are listening to the star we so admire, and tough for her to get us to that place.
"The most I've had is just a talent to amuse" - That is simply, and purely, heartbreaking - to know and understand loneliness on that profound a level.
One of my favourite songs by the great Noel Coward. When Judy performs this, she puts her life, her suffering, all her feeling into it. It's the best rendering of this song there is out there.
Elaine Stritch's is just as wonderfully and beautifully sincere, but she obviously can't match the sheer vocal beauty Judy had. No one can. They were both good friends, incidentally.
powerful yet tender performance by our Judy.

Alma Cogan does it.

No one touches her talent when a song needs to be sung ... to be interpreted.
No one today in the pop realm is worthy to lick the ground upon which she trod.

Considering that Judy was a great pal of the composer, why on earth didn't Noel
Coward coach her in the correct pronunciation of the phrase "heigh ho" which is
a sort of shrug of resignation that rhymes with Hay not High. Not that Judy is the only
one to get this wrong, Portia Nelson~no slouch she~ is guilty of same.

One of the greatest of the greatest songs. And a very touching, but unmawkish rendering.

Just a very emotional song splendidly rendered by the great, incomparable Judy Garland!! Thank you for posting this beautiful offering.
