A conquered people will take on the conduct of their oppressors. You can candy coat it what ever way you want but that word is still degrading to a people. This isnt about terms of endearment it is about ignorance. How many people who use that word use it on job interviews? Mark Lamont Hill has got it right - reclaiming a derrogatory term by the people who were degraded by it is empowering! Some black people might want to use the term, while others would prefer not to - it is a debate for the black community and Hasselbeck needs to let it go and stop trying to play the victim over something that has absolutely nothing to do with her.

I don't think any black man, woman or child that has ever used that slur has ever REALLY felt the effects of racism. The kids that say to each other and the comedians and so-called musicians have never struggled with true racism. Personally I don't use the word and I am black. I also don't want to be called the word by other black people or by other races of peoplle. But at the same time, why does it seem like so many white people want to say it? for most nationalities there is a word that is very offensive. there are words that offend the irish, italian, spanish, chinese etc. among these nationalities, many may use whichever word applies to there group toward each other in a joking manner, but if someone else outside of there culture uses it in there presence, it would be rightfully met with a very negative reaction. so why is it that people don't understand why black people get offended when people use the "n" word?

For me to change is for me to ignore the FACT that there's more white drug users (especially in NY) but blacks make up a higher percentage of drug arrests. Why is that? for most nationalities there is a word that is very offensive. there are words that offend the irish, italian, spanish, chinese etc. among these nationalities, many may use whichever word applies to there group toward each other in a joking manner, but if someone else outside of there culture uses it in there presence, it would be rightfully met with a very negative reaction. so why is it that people don't understand why black people get offended when people use the "n" word?

@sly1124. Dr. Hill is not saying its a good or bad thing. He is saying that it is different word usage. He says he does not use the word. He is saying that people use it in different ways. I dont care if white people use it. Im sure everyone in the country has said it before. When the word is used in a negative way by white or black, black people dont want to hear the word. @Sly1124 You misunderstood my scenario. I know plenty of women black, white whatever who call each other bitches and sluts or hoes in a joking manner. I have a friend who answers her phone by saying whats up slut to one of her sorority sisters. They have an understanding about the usage of those words, because they can relate to one another. If a guy did it however, they'd be pissed. If your daughter was offended by a GUY using the word towards her you'd be pissed as well.

If we applied your logic to everything then by your definition the entire US justice system is racist against minorities, i.e. racial profiling, which creates a double standard in how law enforcement handle's citizens. So if blacks are racist by your definition than the system is racist along with those who support the system, which in this case would be conservatives.

Lets say you have a daughter and some guy calls her a bitch or a slut. That would piss you off if you were a real father. But he could use your logic to defend himself by saying that other women call each other bitches and sluts all of the time. It doesn't change the fact that his usage of the terms is disrespectful. Respect is the issue here.

@sly1124 Dr. Hill is not saying that it is right or wrong. First right and wrong is an opinion. He is saying that people use the word differently in different communities sometimes. Dr. Hill is not trying to justify the word just give a clear understanding of its different usage.He does not use the word. I believe whoever should say the word and definitely not say the n-word anymore because it is the same thing. Dr. Hill is just giving its different usage, he is not justifying the word

@Sly Continue: There's no need for my mentality to change in the way in which you're saying. For me to change is for me to ignore the FACT that there's more white drug users (especially in NY) but blacks make up a higher percentage of drug arrests. Why is that? Profiling targets specific groups. Or I'd have to ignore the FACT (look it up if you'd like) that blacks statistically receive harsher sentencing for similar crimes compared to their white counterparts. Being conscious isn't being racist.

It comes in the form of teacher bias in high school, which I've experienced. Police profiling, which I've experienced. Store clerks following you around as if you're going to steal things, which I've experienced. Wonder how you'd react if an officer pulls you over and asks you why you're driving through a certain neighborhood.
