She had indicated to Bywayters on many previous occasions that she had desired the death of her husband. She was at the very least clearly guilty of shielding an offender and perverting the course of justice by swearing false statements on oath. Nothing she said could be believed. She declined to give any reasonable account of their last meetings. She was plainly a devious liar who hated her husband as much as she desired the lifestyle that being married to him afforded her. Sorry, no sympathy..
Makes you sick : " We do not approve of your extra curricular activities outside of the marital bed. For that, we have decided to let it affect our judgement on you in this matter, and end your life. We consider ourselves good church going people".
Edith Thompson didn't murder anyone. Her lover Frederick Bywaters stabbed her husband, not Edith. Itt was not acceptable that a respectable if unhappy married woman could have an affair during the 1920s. Her love letters were read out in court and it was a scheming prosecuting counsellor who ensured that Edith went to the gallows innocent of a crime she did not commit. I find it a tragic and sad story as depicted in the movie ANOTHER LIFE and in Rene Weiss's factual book.

Yes I know. Edith was labelled an accessory after her love letters to Bywaters were read out in court with little things picked out and magnified! If you have read copies of these letters as I have, you can see how unfair, unjust and corrupt this trial was. Derek Bentley went to the gallows because the police apparently lied under oath! The truth will out eventually on all of this miscarriage of justice cases.
You cant always believe what you read in the newspapers as they are only reporting on what the court relayed. The best book is Criminal Justice by Rene Weiss, amongst many others.
@cracklesnapqueen She was the victim of 'double jeopardy' for women in the criminal justice system. She had violated the unwritten laws that she had not confirmed with gender expectations - i.e. she was judged not only the murder charge but by the fact that she had had an affair. See Helena Kennedy's book 'Eve Was Framed'.
And it is important not to miss the forth woman. After a gap of over 31 years, in which no women were executed at Holloway, although 25 had occupied the condemned cell, there were to be two hangings in 8 months. Styllou Pantopiou Christofi, who was a 53 year old Greek Cypriot woman. And then Ruth Ellis in August 1955.
So, it was five women who were hanged at Holloway from 1902 when it was opened to (help me on this) 1974 when it closed.. i guess i was thinking it was Sachs,Walters and Ellis whose buried remains were moved when Holloway was shuttered.
Mr 76Yearsago, Quite correct. Except that Holloway prison's walls were 33 ft high and it took place in a wooden shed with a hastily-built fence around it to prevent the neighbours around it from seeing poor Edith being carried unconscious into it.
I couldn't beleive it either. The execution took place in the dead of winter. Thompson had "bobbed" black hair. and the crowd would have never seen her being behind the fifteen foot wall of the Jail.
Edith Thompson was hanged because she murdered her husband during an adulterous affair. She was the first woman executed in Britian in fifteen years at the time following 42 women in a row whose death sentenances (including WWI esponiage) were commuted.
Ellis cut his throat with a razor, to the point of near decapitation.

Edith Thompson was guilty of being accessory to murder and that is why she was hanged

All right, in all fairness, I will read the book and review the case. The British press in 1922 did not see it that way.

And I missed (forgot) the fact it took place in Holloway.. I thought Sachs and Walters and Ruth Ellis were the only women ever executed there.

I cannot believe how inaccurate this event is depicted

This poor woman,(Edith Thompson) hanged in the early 1920s for having an affair and had to be carried to the scaffold. So so sad.
