Just watched this again, it still makes me chuckle! Which is far, far more than what could be said for many of today's offering (Peter Kay and Frankie Boyle for example, but I'm sorry but I just don't find them two the least bit funny at all).
Actually, Phil Cool is very, very good. It is easy to pick holes in a performance that is 25 years old, but it made more sense in its day because the aquaphibian character took Phil's core audience (at that time) back to their childhood.
Most people under 30 now wouldn't have even heard of Stingray, so its not surprising that people like Tungstenkid find it easy to post derogatory comments.
As someone else pointed out, this stuff really should be on DVD!
I bumped into Phil Cool in the high st. of my home town Southend-on-Sea 25 years ago, when he was appearing at the Cliffs Pavilion in Westcliff. Even then I was a big fan and naturally said "Hi Phil." I didn't even ask for an autograph as I didn't want to draw too much attention. You know what? He completely ignored me and looked down at the ground. It's one of those moments in your life that you wish you could forget!
His send up of the Paul Simon/Chevy Chase 'You Can Call Me Al' music video was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Would love to find a recording of it.
Hugely talented guy. If guys as good as him doing comedy as good as his, were still on tv, I might actually bother to get a digi box and license again. As it is, tv nowadays just isn't worthy of my attention ;D
Saw him with Jasper Carrot at the Oxford Apollo they did a shared show 10-20 on then swap and they did that for 3 brilliant hours I was in agony from laughing at the end. Pure genius If anyone has it please upload his Hans and Lottie hass sketch thats my all time favourite.
We saw Phil last night with Fairport Convention. A bit older, but brilliant! They are touring at the moment, ( 14thFeb09) so I heartily recommend you google Fairport Convention to see where they are. Well, - well,- worth it!
(I'm a fairport fan, but not part of the PR or anthing!)
Funniest guy who've ever lived. This "stuck in aquaphibian face" sketch had me in a state where I was laughing so much I couldn't breath. It was almost fatal.
We used to live right near phil cool and he whould sometimes go to the pub my mum and dad went too. I remember my mum and dad telling me they sort of knew him back then and i didnt believe them so they got his autograph. He was pretty funny yeh.
Why isn't he on TV any more? I mean he had quite a few series on BBC2 in the 1980s I remember. He was really quite successful. Better than a lot of the rubbish we get now.
Its a shamehe's not on the box anymore. Used to tape his shows weekly as a kid and watch them over and over. Saw him at the height of his fame and i had tears streaming down my face. I guess now he's off the telly, he's done an Alan Partridge and plays smaller audiences?
Another great sketch - the lead up to that part is good too as he gets prepared to appear on the rising stage ... [:o)
Keep them comming m8 - great stuff - btw some of his jokes may not be understood by more younger folks because they are often about old tv commercials - such as the one with the Volkswagen being dropped from a great height...
Got to see him Phil Cool in Concert with Jasper Carrott back in 2004. He's still as hilarious as ever and looks very healthy. He still looks pretty much the same now as he did at the time of this Video (1987)

@joydivision808 LOL. Never thought I'd see a Joy Division fan refer to something else as "fucking shite". Is that even allowed?
At least Phil Cool became widely known in the 80's without committing suicide.
