i find this better than the expertvillage video. I'm not saying that expertvillage is a bad group to get info from, just saying the video they made for uromastyx isn't as informative as this video
Im going to a reptile show sometime soon and want to try and get a uromastyx. I have a custom built 48" L 48" H 24" enclosure that im going to cut the top off of o make it a 48" L 24" H 24" W. Will this be large enough for a single uromastyx possibly 2 maybe but probably not.
Putting all the decorations aside, could we possibley use modeling clay to make the hide-boxes, Heating rocks, or other items? I can't find anything about it, just clay-sand for the uro's to dig in.
@theherpco Uros are actually omnivorous. They should mainly be feed a herbivorous diet though since too much protein can be bad for them. That being said, I am sure a Uro could live on sand it's whole life but it is not a safe substrate choice.
A juvenile Uromaytx should NOT be kept on sand! It can cause impaction which is nearly impossible to reverse. keep your juvenile on a reptile "carpet" or paper towels.
@Yakuzagang5 u dun goofs notice how he says "asnd there whole life." I point out "There vegetarains," the "wont," also what I was just saying Which putting "They're" on both wouldn't work thats like trying to say "They are vegetarians," which works, but then going... "They can be on sand they are whole life." I'm sorry bro, you failed more. ;-;-b
depending on how large the uromastyx is.4x2x2 is bare minimumy for a hatchling all they way to a 12 inch animal.of coarse larger is much better.even babies need proper heat gradient. 4 times the length and twice the width of the animal minimum the only time that rules does not apply is with babies they need a minimum of 4x2x2 for proper gradient just as adults do. personally I would recommend 6+ foot enclosures for smaller species. and much larger for an Aegyptia
no at best it would be used as a ver temporary enclosure. it will eventually become depressed, stressed and without proper conditions the uro will live a shortened life span
No, any Uro book says the absolute minimum for an adult Uro is 50 gal. and believe me it's not big enough, still. I have a 50g and am looking into an 85gal (48L 24W 18T). Bigger is better for adult Uro's. My Uro is 13.5" long and they can get to 14-18"L.
@Tensai1982 Sorry, but I beg to differ. We'll have to agree to disagree. They come from the desert and they don't have a 50 gal. tank in the desert. I ended up buying him a 48" L x 24" W x 24" T tank and he is very happy. If you read about these lizards, they are terrestrial, they do not climb up like a chameleon, they NEED LxW (area) to their tank.
@nickelback2727 Well you're never going to be able to perfectly replicate the environment of any particular species. That being said the rule of thumb is width equal to the length of the animal and length twice that. So with your tank you could fit a 2 foot lizard.
are you saying lindsat pike is wrong..., hes one of north americas foremost authorities on uromastyx. he has worked with them how long...15 years and your saying hes wrong.... ya...right.., on another note, ill have to get a burrow box made up for when i get my two female geryis a male.

a mali uromastyx!
lizardlover12 2 years ago
yeah, a 40 gallon bredder could house a mali pretty well, or you could do overkill like mr.fudgepacker up there.
Whats its name?

wrong. you want it to look NATURAL so they feel more comfortable, and they don't like humidity
boabab95 2 years ago
they like to have a choice of humidity not overall humidity. what do you think they sleep in the wild.......burrows, they hold humidity gradients.
