man... I've been searching for this song for mounths!! I heard a version of it on a Charlie Parker album. And now i was just searching for some Toots music... and he's playing the song!!! :D
Greatest harmonica player of our time - he plays with each cell in his body and full out each and every time. He gives off such joy - irresistable........Why are there so few harmonica players today? And Sanborn is impressive here too, no doubt.
Toots is heavily featured on the wonderful 1971 Quincy Jones Album Smackwater Jack. Toots also plays guitar on this record..One of the greatest albums ever.
@roon41 Toots has worked on many of Quincy Jones' albums, but check out the tune "Brown Soft Shoe". Now that's Toots showing his harmonica chops there. And he also does the guitar and an occasional whistle (just think of the classic "Old Spice" commercial, that's Toots whisling. He is the master of the harmonica and a true talented legend.
OK....All you guys who dig this have to get Brazil Project I & II.........Toots is incredible on these recordings! Smooth, sweet and saucy......Check it out!!
...I have both cd...and the original audio k7 as well !!! (brought by my Father, a life ago, from Brazil)...I play those cd at least a couple of times a week, when I'm having dinner :o))))))))))
Bird could play any genre and Toots learned his best from him! Both have their own unique sound.I play both Jazz and Blues on the harmonica (diatonic and chromatic as well) - Toots and Bird meant a revelation to me.Oh and when I learned to play the chromatic properly it changed my diatonic playing.Learning to play Jazz makes playing Blues more creative.
David Sanborn playing sopranino sax w/Toots doing
'Little Suede Shoes' by Bird. This is one of lullaby melodies written by Bird that exemplifies his simplicity and his complexity. It's almost got that calypso-samba-chorinho feel to it. Great stuff!
Never be put off playing the harmonica when you hear people like Toots because they are freaks of nature so just do your best and enjoy what you can achieve in your own right.
@noyna9 Sorry to disappoint you but they're not freaks of nature! They're just extremely musical people who have devoted their lives to music and practiced for hours on end. They've reached the top of their profession because they're talented and dedicated - not because they're superhuman!
@landztranz LOL I know huh? Ive been playing trumpet for 20 years and hear that all the time. People dont realize how many countless hours and years of studies you have to do, in order for your music to sound great
@landztranz I've been playing trumpet for 20 and am still waiting to sound like Miles, so I know exactly how you feel my friend. It takes a lifetime to become great.
As a harmonica player I find it kinda depressing that this isn't being viewed by more people. No matter whether you play "blues harp" or a chromatic, Toots is the Real Deal - a genuine virtuoso.

David Sanborn is playing a Selmer Soprano Sax. Unlike "Kenny G," David knows how to play it.
