  • this is fine but this is only "good" miling, probably not hyper. i already do this as long as i remember and i can say this doesn't make significant difference unless theres a red light every 100 meters.

  • my car just coasts...you take your foot of the gas, and it keeps going...this only works on lightweight cars

  • I love coasting up to a light while the idiots pass me going 70 and by the time I get to the light it is already green and now I pass him who was idling at the light!

  • Nice video. Visit my blog its whatsyourmpg . blogspot . com. Learn how to increase your gas mileage and save money at the pump.

  • Did you know that if you add 2 cups of sugar to your oil it will improve your gas milage by 100% ?? This is because most japanese and american cars have a faulty diabetic converter after being driven only 700 miles on low octane fuel. This trick works every time and is guaranteed to make the engine seize, to have this problem, follow the directions !!

  • @mrbooziebrews haha and stick a banana in the tailpipe so the fumes can be recycled back into gas

  • true hypermiling Rule No.1: DON'T EVER BRAKE!!! (avoid unless for safety purposes). Braking is money down the drain. Conserve momentum whenever humanly possible and keep engine in neutral while coasting...

  • @miatageekscott

I don't think you even have enough power to pass me in your civic..

0-60 in 6 seconds? riiiiight.. thats classic..

It's possible with a tail wind going down a steep grade maybe..

  • @miatageekscott Sure, but guess who doesn't have to pay those greedy fuckbags that run the oil companies as much? ME!

  • @miatageekscott

    1. Your Civic will not go 0-60 in 6 seconds.

    2. If you floor your Civic to go around people, you won't get 35 mpg.

Why must civic drivers act so cool all the time? You're driving an economy car.

  • I like the Flyleaf song playing in the background.

  • I do that every once and awhile when driving.. i've noticed a decrease in my fuel consumption. it works. driving smooth isn't stupid, it makes your car last longer.

  • i drive like that since 1998.

  • @hitachi088

I've alwaysdone that since I started driving, it just didn't have a fancy term or following..

I'm no tree hugging hippie or anything.. this is in a Toyota truck.. not a Prius LOL

  • Saving gas by driving slower or smoother is not stupid or gay , it is saving money and increasing the life of your car ...

  • @hitachi088

    I agree..

  • does switching between gears and turning your engine on and off affect your car. is it worth it?

  • @5botball

switching between gears? thats what the transmission is meant to do, I'm not quite sure what your referring to..

Engine on and off doesn't effect anything..

Just change some of your driving habits and that'll save you a huge chunk of money in the long run... you don't need to turn the engine off to get good results..

  • sounds good thanks =)

  • @DdgeShelby sorry man but ur wrong about the shuttin the car off vs. leave it runnin when a car truck what ever starts its is at wide open throttle to start so u use more gas if u shut it off then if u would leave it runnin for 5 10 min whatever

  • @GKDSoldier

Where on the video do you see me shutting the vehicle off?

the truck was in neutral at an idol..

Also, you actually don't use as much fuel as you think if you killed it at a light and start it when green vs letting it idol.. I have a fuel metering devise that shows gallons per hour and you do save on fuel when killing it at a stop light, but only if its one of those 8 lane hige intersections where you sit for about a minute and a half or more..

  • @GKDSoldier

If you start a warmed up engine, it doesn't use as much fuel as a cold started engine..

Thats where that misconception comes from..

If our engines warmed up, it doesn't take much fuel at all to get it back up and rollin vs idoling for 5-10 minutes like you stated..

  • @DdgeShelby not in the video it was about one of ur previous comments

  • I always am concious about gearing down and avoiding using my brakes, given there isn't an ass behind me wanting to race to the red light, save gas and break pads...

  • good technique

  • The person in front has a higher top speed which means he is turning more fuel into kinetic energy at every start, and more kinetic energy into heat at every stop.

  • I hypermile too in my old school nissan. Anyways, I been getting about 32mpg city and highway. It is difficult and requires lots of patience. Anyway I did a write up for those who want to learn more on it. geocities. com/hypermiler1

  • How slowly do you accelerate?

  • There's debate over that. There's two schools of thought:

One is that if you accelerate slower, the engine doesn't have to work as hard.

The other is that if you floor it from a stop, the engine has to work hard but only for a couple seconds, after which your speed should remain constant.

Try it out on your car, accelerate fast and see your fuel economy, then accelerate slow.

  • Really? There's a debate about that?? "Flooring it from a stop" will destroy anything resembling a decent mpg average.... every time, all the time. period. It's MUCH better to build acceleration slowly if you're trying to get good mileage. not to mention it's FAR better on your engine, your transmission and your tires.

  • It's general knowledge that at higher RPMs your engine runs more efficiently, right?

I'm not saying push it to the redline every time, but accelerate hard, then you spend less time accelerating. I'm not saying gun it between lights, but if you accelerate to the same speed, one time gradually, one time rapidly, it ultimately depends on your car which method is more efficient.

I know there was an article about this in Road&Track or Motortrend or something, I could find it for you if you want...

  • @chrisknows I would like you to find that. Because I have tried many techniques and so far accelerating slowly is the best.

  • i love the background music :)

  • Yea, I thought Flyleaf in the background was AWESOME! What radio station was that?

  • Very nice video, I will make some real life videos soon. In the mean time, check out my videos on average speed driving/traffic flow. Ultimately traffic lights are awful ways to move traffic because they encourage the hurry p and wait driving style. You should look into modern roundabouts, they're better in basically every single category. It's amazing! But I agree, if you can help it, try to never stop, just keep rolling by slowing down earlier. It's far better for traffic flow as well.

  • I guess that's so you waste less fuel rubbing two clutch plates together - something which every car does starting from a stop.

  • I've started doing this in my Tribute and I actually switch to neutral when i am approaching a red light, not sure if that's bad for an automatic? Anyway, I have increased my miles per tank by about 50 (from 250 to about 300). Someone let me know if changing to neutral while in motion is bad please, also if going back to drive while in motion is bad! Thanks.

  • A better technique is to coast up to a light and try to maintain speed when the light changes. If you can tell you won't be able to continue up to the light without braking, it's better to brake early to slow down so you can maintain speed when it changes. This will avoid having to accelerate as much, which is where you really lose MPGs.

  • First off thats a great song!

Yeah I try to do theses things so I get 21 city mpg in my Lincoln mark viii.

But it you are red lighted is ti smart to turn off your car I heard if you stoping for more than 3 seconds you should.

  • True, it does save gas to turn the car off at lights, but it is illegal. You're also overworking your starter motor if you have to use it 20 times an hour vs 3 times a day.

  • No more illegal than "accidentally" stalling out at a light ;)

the starter is no biggie, the only thing that goes wrong with these toyota starters are the contacts..

  • DADShadowFox

I don't know from where yuo are. But here in Europe especially in Switzerland we MUST turn the car off at lights. And we don't overwork the starter of our cars. I drive about 40,000 miles a year and turn off my car several time a day and NEVER had any problem with the starter!

  • That's interesting. Here in the USA, it's illegal to turn your car off in traffic.

  • Yeah well starters in many American cars suck...So the MR. Goodwrench would love to see people every 20-25k instead of 80-110k.

  • There is some debate on this... a good technique is if you do turn the car off to put it in neutral first... this will cause less stress on the transmission as it emmulates a manual transmission. but coast as much as you can is typically the best way to save gas... most cars weigh about 2500 lbs... it takes a lot of energy to get that moving... so if you're already moving try to use your mommentum as much as possible...

  • It is much better to steal gas from your neighbors tank. A couple plastic screws in and out of the tank and a few minutes later your flush with gasoline!

  • Good Idea

  • Thanks. I'd been thinking about it a while and shit, it just makes cents. Get it.... Try it.. You'll like it.

  • indeed this is a VERY good tip, i been using it lately and it really works. Every little drop saved works!

  • do what ya gotta do, knawmean !
