I wonder what ever happened to my Grade 5 teacher who used to get us to sing this song at school. That was a long time ago. Where are you, Mrs. Regier?
I wish that Les Paul could have been in on this... I mean, between Karen's lovely vocals and Les' unique approach to this, it would have been a dream. Debate all you like, Karen
Agree with Sulfurhawk, a beautiful voice and a sad loss. It's a shame she considered other peoples perception of her so important she took her own life trying to achieve a mistaken belief. Because girls, I'm going to let you into a little secret - When us guys are looking for someone special, someone to share the rest of our life with, a girl's appearence is of NO importance. Love is blind. Men are interested in what the beer tastes like, not the shape of the bottle.
When this album came out I was in Grade 8 and our music teacher had us study this song in class - she claimed it was a below standard recording for the Carpenters and I countered her by saying the solo sax part was as brilliant as the solo trumpet part in "Close to You" which was what the critics touted as genuis in the Close to you arrangements -- I eventually won the argument that Goofus was great
I HAVEN'T heard this song on the radio in years, I was just a kid last time it played,I'm 41 love the silky sound of Karen's voice, great song, too bad radio stations don't put it on air.
Hey! I tracked this video down because I heard a barbershop quartet perform a rendition of it that was simply mind-blowing. I don't regret finding the original, though - a nice little treat to encounter on the Youtube. Thanks!
UHH yeah, I do. I'm friends with Robin, who was a close friend of Karen's. She also knows Richard, so yeah, I never knew Karen personally, but I know how she acted off stage and such. Talented. And such a sweety.
totally agree with you. this song is hard to sing. I think that Karen did a great job on this song. It is unigue but then again so is Karen!! Love the video and the song.
nice video of The Carpenters!!! They are my absolute favorite too. I think this song is very unique!!! Love the video and thanks for posting the song!! The Carpenters are the best.

stepped up to this one and sent it sailing!!

One of the weakest song of this album, along with Boat To Sail and Breaking Up Is Hard To Do. Karen didn't deserve THIS.

Fun song and rendition, but I never understood why they released this as a single. It was never destined to become a hit.

THis was released in 1976 or 1977 as a single - not sure what the C's were thinking. It's cute and all but not pop music hit material.

Karen had one of the most beautiful voices in all of music. Sure wish she didn't have a mental problem with her weight.

What a shame that a bad attitude towards her own body killed one of the most brilliant singer and drummer in the history of music
Please, Girls of the World, don't let your body-image kill you!

This is not the original. Search for "goofus" in youtube, and you will find versions going back to the 1930s. But this is a great version.

A great little peppy song, a pleasant diversion from their slow ballads, I like the tuba in the background music also. Nice videos.

Singing this song requires great precision and control, as well as taking deep breaths.
