  • That was really interesting. The Kendoka seemed to go on the offensive to prevent the flail from gaining momentum. Not exactly sure if that was a great strategy.

  • These guys are good fighters. (Well at least one of them is :P ).

  • Interesting match. Question: Why did not the warrior with the flail attack the swordsman's feet/legs? I understand there may have been rules, as it was in a basketball court/gym, but aren't you supposed to use the range/every aspect of the weapon to your advantage? I am a definite new person to the Martial Arts (I've taken a weeks worth due to laacking funds), but from seeing Anderson Silva, the flail fighter backed up to much/gave up too much ground. I think side steps would have been better...

  • If the flail guy lost his Flail, he'd probz be screwed...

But If the SAMURAI lost his Booken/Shinai, he's still just as dangerous :)

  • @TheMoistCamel

Your comment is based on the false assumption that Europeans did not develop their own unarmed combat techniques.

  • No, I know they did, but the heavy suit of armour would've made hand to hand very diificult. However the Samurai's armour was lighter, and therfore it would be easier to move quickly :)

  • @TheMoistCamel a punch to the face from a metal gauntlet would fracture your jaw or knock you out.

  • @Grenadier1775 It would yeah, but the Samurai's helmet isn't as secure as a knights is. Obviously, thats a negative thing, so it might come off, taking most of the impact.

One more after that though, the samurai would be destroyed.

The only reason I said it, because if the knight was put to the ground, it'd be very sllow getting up. If the other one survived that long.haha

  • @TheMoistCamel stick to your animes pal.

  • @opsimathics grr. If the knight without a weapon hit a samurai, obviously, it would send him flying, maybe break a rib. But if a samurai used judo, and got the knight to the floor, it would struggle, or even fail if it was that heavy to get back up.

And since a katana couldn't cut through a chest plate, being close with a knife would probably finish it. This is individually

However, group on group, I would put my money on a knight every time, as the weapons they used were_not sharper,_but_heavyr

  • Lol that a long ass flail lol. (haha thats what she said.)

  • I liked how it went to wrestling for a bit. I think for the most part the sword will win unless he gets completely bonked on the head before he stabbed the other guy. Even if he got hit good I think it's likely the other guy is still going to get stabbed or deeply cut or lose some fingers. I think the tie up thing with the flail might work but not very easily at all. I like the music too what is it might I ask?... good footage

  • the flail weapon is similar to the throwing sickles thing...what thous ninja use as the weapon thing that have chain and bunch weapon attach to it...oh well it doesn't matter, they should find a way drink lots booze while fighting still. What school is this anyway?

  • brofist at 0:50

  • Oo that kendo guy is gonna be sore. Lol. That thing is almost impossible to block it's gonna hit you somewhere...

  • @WyldOrbit Yeah haha, would the only way to fight it be further away from it, and then come n close,

    or stay close to it?

  • was he wearing hockey gloves.. awesome=3

  • this reminds me of the dog brothers

  • Lol.. I could tell the kendo guy had something "to prove" the moment he started grabbing at the other weapon. He's a sore loser.

  • @luckyglasspig hes got issues, samurai dont act like that

  • @Satsujintekisuito Yeah.. If it was kendo he'd be kicked off the mat. He's upset he got hit and is willing to bend the rules to win. They obviously agreed on rules or it would look like a dog brothers match (google it) right out of the gate. No, this guy is a cry baby loser and needs to get his ego checked , with an elbow to the face.

  • @luckyglasspig If he's using Kendo, he allowed all his training to go right out the window, poor footwork, poor posture, poor strikes, little to no ki-ai. Very cool weapon pairing though, and honestly, if I could get my opponents weapon out of their hands like that, I would do it too.

  • 1:25 - shit just got real.

  • finnaly a display of some courage and skill. thank you.

  • Wooden flail is in NO WAY similar to metal flail and should never be used to represent one. The whole point of flail is its weight - both its greatest strength and liability. Without weight - it's pretty much a different weapon.

  • @leexag The original threshing flail shown in this video was 100% wood. The only possible differences were that the flail head might have been thicker in medieval times, and some peasants might have been able to wrap iron bands around the flail head before going to war.

  • Remember I was here.Thai 7:01PM 4/8/2011

  • Nice training.I'd train with either of you.

  • Flail isn't a very reliable weapon, because once you lose the momentum of the flail and your enemy closes in on you, you're kinda screwed :P

  • @Lindsay4922 Short staff is a very good weapon for close fighting. When you get close with a flail, you also have a short staff available and it is illustrated this way in training manuals.

  • lolol @ :29

    "bitch give me that" XD

  • Is that jiu-jitsu/ grappling at 1:31?

  • ass

  • you should get in there with a chigiriki!

  • That was a real battle of submission. I believe that's the way it should be.

  • What the hell was that?? 1:26 you call that sparring?

  • Asian Music, Asian Wapons, Asian Sex ?!?! KAMASUTRA 1:26 ?!?!?!

  • Man.. nothing says samurai spirit like hockey gloves!

  • good dual but bad cam dude. one question, why are you using fail on foot ?cos i thought fail was horse back weapon, it design to use the speed X the gavity X the swing arc to produces bone cushing power , but on foot you cant do a good swing arc and cant have enough speed to use it effectively .

  • @cheeplyOwasp the flail is a farmers weapon and was never used from a horse.

    °v°

  • @zukuru He is thinking of the European Flain. BIG Heavy spike ball. European knights used them, Great for busting in wooden shields and knocking the shit out of people with less stress on the arm than a mace. This is Oriental weaponry used differently than a flail of europe.

  • @EmoTrout The flail weapon comes from an agricultural thresher, used by peasants and farmers. This happened in Europe as well. One only need look at the Galloway Flail as an example. The archetypal ball and chain emerged much later that the flail, and may have been an amalgam of the flail and the mace. The mace itself was already seeing variations, such as the military morning star. In truth, though, the spiked ball and chain would be more dangerous to the horse than effective.

  • @zukuru

Sure your not thinking of a harvesting scythe?

Flail aka Morning Star is a skullcrushing weapon that was used to smash plate armor into something similar to a crushed soda can. How often do farmers catch heavily armored warriors trying to steal their crops?

  • @Jonbino

I should add that there are more than one type of flail and the one in this video IS of agricultural decent... However i did have fun advertising the Morning Star flail... it is so beast i had to mention.

  • @zukuru i think he means like an english flail like a morning star

  • @zukuru @cheeplyOwasp Depends on the type. The one shown here is indeed a peasants weapon (derived from an agricultural tool), however, the ball-on-a-chain design was actually used on horseback (and foot).

  • @zukuru I agree

  • @zukuru You say never... Never say never. Unless of course you happened to have personally viewed every single battle, spar, reenactment etc. that a flail was ever used in.

  • @zukuru The flail is similar (and if speaking historically, identical) to the nunchuku, in that they were both grain threshing tools that were used as weapons. The flail did get a military makeover to make it one handed and usable from a horse. However, there were as many names for this weapon as there were users, from holy-water sprinkler to morning star to mace and chain. Many of these names seemed to be used interchangeably with their solid-hafted counterparts.

  • @zukuru well actually it was...it was kinda what u would call a morning star, it was made out of iron, two bits wich were kept by no more than maybe two chain elements

the "head" was long and flat, sometimes with spikes on it

but as the bloke befor said, its a horseback weapon

(of corse its all based on the farmer flail and stuff...but i thought u liked to know ;P)

  • @zukuru not true, the Koreans use the flail both on foot and on horse. See the Muyedobotongji:

  • @zukuru i thought knights eventually adapted one handed versions for both foot and horse combat, not sure though?

  • @GeneralAdvance yes they did - called morning star (morgenstern) - handle of 50 to 70 cm, than a chain/chains with iron balls at the end.

  • @cheeplyOwasp The small hand held flail (ball and chain) was used on horseback. This threshing flail was used on foot a lot in Europe, but Korean soldiers did use a long staff flail on horseback. I'm not sure how they managed, but we know they did!

  • @cheeplyOwasp they fall off horse...

  • @cheeplyOwasp You're thinking of a European flail, not a rice flail.

  • @cheeplyOwasp very true, but knights were still known to use their flails on the ground, thats why they made morning stars, they are smaller and easier to wield

  • This is not Kendo how i know it, maybe the next generation wants more action instead of Ki control

  • This is not Kendo how i know it

  • it's exceptionally easy to have a fight seem "heated" with a flail user. they tend to be quite erratic weapons in the heat of combat. they're more weapons to keep your opponent distracted with this big spinning piece of pain flying around than to actually do alot of damage.

  • Wow, that looked like it really got heated in at least a couple of instances. Was it supposed to go down that way? Like when they started grappling and all that? That seemed borderline unprofessional.

  • 1:27 umm......?

  • @USBYDProductions exactly... Kendo? Nah...

  • I believe it is better to fight with clarity than with anger, anger throws off perception and judgment.

  • they getting to mad

  • Kendo guy has terrible footwork. [Left heel on the ground]

  • dude with the sword is a fucking asshole.... i would have already pull my gun if he try to grab my weapon and and wrestle me... like wtf... if you want to fist fight.. just do it.. this is fucking sparring .... u stop and restart when you strike your opponent the first time... kendo is about your mind and inner spirit... this guy got none ..fucking hot head

  • lol that was Crazy exciting to watch Good Fight!.

  • I've tried similar match-ups to this; generally speaking, sword wins unless the guy with the other weapon has a serious edge in skill. A mediocre swordsman will beat someone who's good with nunchaku, staff, whatever; there's a reason why swords have the mystique that they do, and it's that a sword trumps other weapons unless the swordsman is incompetent or his opponent highly skilled.

  • @JCLeSinge dude the flail was a peasant weapon that was so effective that it was adopted by knights. it was meant to be used against an opponent with a shield. the chain would strike the shield and the heavy metal ball would go over and crush the armor. the way to use it against a sword alone is to get the sword wrapped in the chain. thats not possible when sparring like these people do. and if you watch the other videos you will see that the one guy is always using a katana substitute

  • @multiplemes101 (bokken or shinai) giving him the edge in practice and skill.

  • @multiplemes101: Different flail; you're thinking of a morning-star, which is a one-handed "ball & chain" on a short haft, used roughly as you've described. The flail being used here is a "big-sweeper", similar to the old English threshall (basically, corn flails).

But all the same; swords tend to win, all else being equal. Sword beats spear, unless the spearman is really good or really lucky. Same goes for flails and most other weapons; the only thing that trumps a sword is a gun.

  • Man we have no fight clubs for this in Irving TX.. how sad.. Great video man awesome

  • i like kendo better only because of its concentration and peace with the mind

  • The flail would be very easy to defend against. Since he's doing a circular motion with it all the person with the shinai needs to do is get the flail caught around the end of his weapon and pull back to disarm his opponent.

  • lol he's trying to win the fight by submission

  • I thought a flail was supposed to be use against shield opponents.

  • the man with the shinai i felt had a poor stance, like his stance was no different then if you were walking around

  • @Skullzero1 exactly, no footwork whatsoever. also his left heel wasn't lifted

  • Ehh...No...Flails will always be heavier than that flimsy stick on a rope. Their main selling point is huge mass=damage. I don't think a person could properly imitate the effect of a flail in this situation.

  • LMAO!!! Love how that just took it to the ground gloves off!!! XD

  • What i like best is at the end of each sparring session the contestants always hug, very good sportsmanship!! ^_^

  • @123fuse :D

  • That frail looks like a nunchuk with a oversize stick end

But this is a great video KATANAS RULES!!!!

  • @Hell6125 yes but sabres, cutlasses, kreigmessers and longswords are better

  • u know i realy just wanna watch a fight were they have no protection just there bodys and woonden swords the 1 who wins is the 1 who is stood up at the end of the fight thats would be cool

  • @CuteAngelCA

No, it wouldn't be cool. It would be awful barbarism. Most people, most fighters included, don't actually want to hurt people, and don't actually get hurt.

The vikings thought heaven was fighting all day, striving with the utmost of your mental and physical abilities, fighting to win, and then at the end of the day everyone gets up, dusts themselves off, and goes and has a beer together. That's cool.

  • @CuteAngelCA

    Seek help.

  • @CuteAngelCA And you would open your dirty skankhole to the victor. So it goes in war and competition

  • @CuteAngelCA See, that doesn't work, because if all your fighters "practice" by killing each other then you very quickly have an army of half its size, then a quarter its size, then 12.5%... And that's after only 3 practice rounds! It also doesn't take into account horrible, debilitating injuries that the "winners" can have.

Even Roman slave gladiators didn't usually fight to the death. They were too expensive to train, and so were treated more like professional boxers.

  • @taitungknight no the vikings were relentless murderers hell bent on destroying everything that wasnt viking

  • its kinda obvious that the flail is next to useless in this fight... he cant keep the momentum up against the sword. rush the flail and it becomes a stick on the defensive.

  • This one was alot more agressive than usual...enemies maybe?

  • @WayOfTheNunchaku

    I don't think so.

Good friends tend to get more physical as well.

And the hug at the end looked genuine to me.

    They were having fun!

  • I saw the kendo guy block the flail a few times, thats only possible now because this is not what i would call a real flail, these things had a blunt impact of epic proportions. So passing it away with your swortie is no go. Best thing you can do agains a weapon of that size is dodge away and try to get close as quick as possible.

    But nice vids overall.

  • lame

  • bokoboko dane!

  • my name isnt bokoboko. ._.

  • Ok, if you're going to use a shinai for something use it for kendo, not for play.

  • Quite the serious statement coming from a guy with a bunch of silly cosplay and anime videos on his channel.

  • That would be one cosplay video, but what does that have to do with me comment?

  • this seems like a really awesome sparring group training with all sorts of weapons. if only it was easier to get groups like this together i would love to get in on that

  • these guys are cool , there are a few things i would like the submitter of this video to answer , number 1 do u guys train in 1 weapon in particular or on the day do u just say " heck ill take the flail you take the shinai" , my second question is has the guy weilding the flail had any professional trainng because id imagine it to be hard to find someone to teach you how to use a flail. any way please send me a reply or just write a comment answering my Q , thanx!

  • Heia te.

    to answer your q´s :

    - we train primarily with sticks. Each of us is specialiced in addition to one or more additional weapons. The guy here is using flexible weapons, like 3 section staff, 2 section staff and flail. And yes, during the sparring we meet, select the weapon pairing and go. You see the outcomes on this channel.

    - most is self study & testing, especially for the more "exotic" weapons.

    °v°

  • @zukuru I'd suggest a you guys try a rope dart, but I'm not sure any "sparring" variant is made.. or safe.

  • good fight... but some flail uses heavy steel balls, wouldnt be so easy to pass that spinning with a sword...

  • 1:20 amazing takedown by the kendo guy

  • maybe fail should experiment with half swording techniques

  • I think he figured it out in one of the other videos with the flail.

  • Too bad in real life you'd most likely die from the first strike. This is fun to watch though.

  • They both fought very well and used the advantages there weapons awarded them.

  • ya, but who the fuck would take the force of a spinning steel fail willingly?

  • Not that I know anything about dueling with weapons or anything, but wouldn't a steel flail build much more momentum than could be reasonably simulated by a wooden dowl attached by a rope?

  • Despite the vid is SO FUNNY., it is disgusting the way they fall to the floor and those things, it's more a strees fight than a meeting of marcial arts.

  • What are you talking about? Just because the one guy had a Shinai doesn't mean they have to stick the codified rules and traditions of Kendo, which is a SPORT. If two fighters close the distance to the point where they can't use their weapons then it's time to grapple. This is a good, real fight. Your so called 'Marcial Arts' use to be a lot more martial and a lot less art.

  • Have you practiced one marcial art???

    I think you haven't....

  • I think that's a little foolish of you to say. You can easily see by my profile that I currently have 13 videos concerning different aspects of Historical European Martial Arts. Six of which illustrate my studies on the Medieval Flail. Or do you only consider Eastern traditions a legitimate Martial Art? .. And couldn't I say the same thing to you?? All I could find on your profile was a bunch of piano sonatas...

  • Of course you will find a lot of piano stuff in my youtube channel, since i'm a pianist. But that doesn't mean that I have'nt practiced some marcial arts (hapkido). I can say that fighting is an art too, but it has a lot to be with harmony and energy, not to fury or rage.

  • Thanks for clarification on what you think a martial art is. A serious question: What would be the most 'harmonious' way for two fighters to resolve combat after they have closed the distance and are in physical contact like at 1:20 ? Clearly the idea of grappling like in the arts of Judo, Jiu-Jitsu or even Aikido are too vulgar for your taste. What is a better solution?

  • Ok, maybe we have different opinions about marcial arts. Let my tell you what I think: I think that when you are practicing a marcial art, you may follow some rules, and of course, if you are n a street fight, you won't follow them. Also i think that what happened at 1:20 shouldn't have been resolved as if it were a street fight...

  • Another thing, I'm not talking about the only one moment when they fall to the floor, i'm talking about the whole fight, and it's obviously that those men are figthing without any harmony, they are trying to kill eahc other!! or maybe not, but you can clearly see their rage.

  • you´re right, the two went angry and fought more rude than usually - they agreed to fight level 2 (hard sparring with everything) before they started, and they did. I was the cleaner down there. And after the fight they where still friends.

This was the first time, they fought in this weapon pairing - the shinai man wasn´t to impressed from getting the flail hit to the back of his had.

However sometimes it is the time for harmony and sometimes for big balls.

    tx for your thoughts°v°

  • LOOK AT 0:31

    LOL!!!!!!!!!

  • that kendoka needs to stop making moves based on emotions o.O looks like hes striking in anger rather than strategy

  • this is just NO kenjutsu like a normal kenshi would use.

its basicly just a bit slashing around without technic.

it hurts me as a kenshi to see something like this!

  • not to mention these two guys are very disrespectful!

  • Some poor sportsmanship in this video, little bit of ego getting in the way. Especialy from the Shinai combatant. A little disappointing.

  • meh some of the kendo guys are kindof elitist like that

  • Chain whip for the win! :)

All your weapons would lose against the 9 sectional chain whip.

  • 1.26 his getting raped by the kendo user! get off him you pervert!

  • yeah...for much I look I can't see boobs so... xodarapi are you on drugs?

  • That's awesome. I think the person in the green is female. If they were a sparring couple... hot!

I know, I know. Immature. It's still awesome, though.

  • Pretty sure that's a guy.

  • and you´re rigth, king.

    °v°

  • whahahahaha ur blind xDDDDDDD

i am thinkink what the guy in green thinks when he reads that xDDDDDDDd

  • I acually have never heard of those hmmm maybe my weapon knowledge is slipping

  • that is a very long handled short headed flail

the bigest strength (and weakness) of the flail is that a large portion of it was not a solid piece Hard to block and hard to block with

  • You are thinking of a Knight's flail. They were actually kind of rare. The long handled threshing flail seen here was used much more often during war-time in cultures all around the world. China, Japan, Korea, and much of Europe. I would agree that the flail head could be longer, but it's middle band should be even shorter in my opinion.

  • you can tell this is from a later fight meet. look how versitile they both are. the guy with the shinai only using 1 hand sometimes. grabing the other guys weapon. then the other guy got a take down. this is proper fighting. really mixing it up, throwing all different techniques into 1 fighting system. awesome! keep it up!

  • i love this zukuru profile they fight wiith weapons from different eras and cultures that wouldnt normally meet each other

  • loool niceee now thaats is a sparring with your soul on it jej1:30 awesome thats how you practice for real life! jejeje a little to rush for friendly sparring, but i see in a lot of your vids that a lot of you ppl hold back and cant realy fight to your full abilities insted of holding back maybe you should try to use more protective gear. lol but you do this for yourselves not for ppl to see so... im just saing it would be intersting to see you really going at it

  • To poopwad

"While sidestepping", Are you seriously trying to say you can move your entire body out of the way and attack before someone else can swing a stick at you?

    Vids please lol.

  • your're being too defensive with the flail, flails are an offensive weapon, they are one of my personal favorite weapons, them and dual broadsword, with a longflail i say hit him in the shins while sidestepping, and when you swing at torso, get some power in to wrap around and hit him past the guard, obviosuly not like full swing power, thatll hurt real bad, but get a good swing, flails are made to go around parries

  • yur right aaron

  • well i dont mean more violently, i mean attack more, wrapping up their weapon only works if they have a crossguard or using an axe or something, so you have to strike rather than tangle when fighting swords, our flail is padded because flails are hard to control speed with, but its also a ball flail with 2-3 heads, i think one ripped off and its 2 now

  • i kno what u meant exactly

  • Heia Poop*,

tell me, how you offensively use the flail in

a sparring, without destroying your sparring partner seriously - we don´t do fight death fights - we do friendly sparrings with sometimes unorthodox weapon pairings - to test posibilities and abilities. To spar with the intention to show big balls is not the way, our game works. If it works in your world - I´m more than interested to see your vids ... °v°

    merry x - mas & greetz

  • i meen staff not mace lashington staff lol

  • 5 stars, great fight.

  • tx for your input, Djemps.

For sparring and testing purposes, the configuration, Alimango has choosen, is hard enough to control. I agree, that in a real fight environment, your tips to pimp up the flail are valid - bud we´ll wait for

the next real battle t test it...

    Peace

  • Awesome to see someone trying out the long flail. I will be putting up some videos about the Medieval European within the month. (hopefully). I'd suggest lengthening the flail-head (swingle) and shortening the rope (middle band)

  • Heia Djemps,

tx for sharing your 4 vids arround nediaval techiques with the flail. Good research, good input.

    chapeau

    Torben

  • its a lashing mace not a flail

  • What are you talking about? Is 'Lashing Mace' a translation of some Asian word for this weapon? I've heard it called a Kurunma-Bo (turning staff) in Japanese. One term for it in Chinese culture is "Big Sweeper". But I can guarantee you this weapon was called a 'Flail' in the European tradition.

  • i meant lashing staff

  • Ok I see. That's one way to translate the word Shaozigun. Thanks for the clarification.

  • ya thank you for your time
