  • This might be the best version ever. Sandy sounds like she's about to explode. The phrasing is intense with desperation.I love Fairport, however if this was her only recording (ever) she would Qualify for Immortality.

  • Sounds a bit empty with the post-recording string section missing...

  • WAY DO ALL THE GREATS DIE YOUNG

  • beste folksong ooit geschreven.., best folksong ever written...

  • Having lost two friends of some 30 years this past year, this song is particularly poignant for me.

  • My dad (Ron Chesterman) loved this track. Hearing Sandy's haunting vocals, takes me back to my childhood!!

  • Richard Thompson advised her to change 'purple' to 'evening', but years later admitted that psychedelic purple was probably OK after all! Of it's 'Time' perhaps.

  • I listen to this song and the story of my life flashes before my eyes . I'm sad yet hopefull, i'ts never over till it's over , there is always hope and there is love in this world , you just can't give up , peace to everyone who feels her music on such a personal level

  • OMG I still cry.

  • such a Beautiful song, full of feeling and love. love it love it, thats what i call music

  • Wonderful, but the BBC version is even better, very poignant to compare them.

  • still loving you.

  • I still play this album and it is a gem

  • The mind boggles as to what sort of character "dislikes" this song.

    Many thanks for the upload.

  • search nicolas and the iceni summers end. they write beautiful folk which has echoes of denny and drake.

  • Easily my favourite version of this song - the Fairport version is OK but this has a basic simplicity that through 30+ years I have simply found endearingly wonderful.

  • My GOD she's so beautiful and so is the song. I still cry every time I listen to this beautiful song . I have no thought of leaving . What a wonderful thing to say.

  • Like her other later version and Judy's, it still gives chills. Passing time and lost friends only deepen the meaning of the lyrics. There, another couple minutes just went! Get out and live.

  • I bought this album years ago and I still love it - pure and beautiful

  • search nicolas and the iceni narrow road. they write beautiful folk music which has echoes of denny

  • My vinly long worn out but found this LP on CD great.

  • Sandy Denny is the composer. I was born too late for Fairport Convention, the band with which she recorded the most well known version of this song. This (earlier) version was on a Hallmark, cheap label, LP called Sandy Denny and the Strawbs - All Our Own Work. I think this was released in 1973. I was, and still am, a Strawbs fan, and bought this in 1975. The black and white photo at the beginning of this video was the back cover pic. Also on this LP was "Tell Me What You See In Me".

  • Stone-cold classic that cuts straight to the core of anyone unafraid to face their mortality or regrets, yet never leaves me feeling that life is not precious. The gem in Denny's crown

  • Strange to say, the first version of this song I heard was a live performance by Judy Collins on a long forgotten tv show in the early 1960's. I thought it was absolutely magical and still do. I have both Judy and Sandy's versions on vinyl and now think they're both wonderful. Who was the original composer?

  • @gordbard When Sandy composed & recorded it herself, she was only 20! Then she recorded with the Strawbs (1967 but was unreleased for 5 years) & performed with fairport convention early 70's. In the meantime Judy Collins recorded & released her version of Sandy's song in 1968. Sadly Sandy died in early 1978, just 31 years old. Not only did she sing like an angel, she wrote like one too...and though with no thought of leaving, left us too soon. Who knows where the time goes,or when the time comes

  • @mythtree I don't remember commenting on this. However I do have a lot of Sandy and Judy's material. Judy is all on vinyl but sadly Sandy's vinyls are rare. My real treasure is her debut solo release, 'Sandy' with the beautiful David Bailey portrait on the front of the sleeve.

  • sad deserted shore...your fickle friends are leaving..hmm

  • This is ths best music ever. I love everything about it. I've been so bad during my short time on this rock, I didn't get the teaching. But, Sandy has ripped my soul out of my feeble frame. I'm SO ashamed

  • @Seaventeares From my perspective, life is about learning those hard lessons it has to offer. Once we learn them; we can move onward and upward through the karmic wheel. I would say that it is important to keep your humility and move on to what else life offers with a new and hopefully better outlook on life. ... cheers!

  • @Seaventeares We never stop learning, we are all equal and while i am NOT a christian. The phrase; "love thy neighbour as thyself and do unto others as we would have done unto us" has a buddhist feel about it? Living up to that, is for me difficult. But. I feel happier for trying. To know one's self is difficult. You may consider? Trying Myer-Briggs Personality Test for your indicator? It's free on-line and helped me come to understand myself better. ... good luck and happy trails!

  • @hirundine That is a wonderful thing to say. I am not a Christian either, but I am open to all the things that help other people enjoy their life. It IS difficult to know oneself and i DO feel that I can try to 'improve' my way of living and learning. Thank you so much for helping me re-consider the fact that I can learn to be a better person through a few wonderfully chosen careful words from a complete stranger. Love and best wishes Seaventeares

  • Who knows how the time stands still .... as it does for Sandy.

  • Oh joy of joys, easily my favourite version of this lovely, lovely song. What a voice!!!!

  • Ok just listened to 5 versions...this is the best

  • This is a lovely version containing great long drawn-out notes.

The original demo by Sandy is also amazing if you havent heard it.

I wonder how many more great versions Sandy has done and I want to hear them all. I believe that the fact that so many artists have covered this song demonstrates its greatness.

  • Don't know why this is considered as "Sandy Denny & The Strawbs" as this is Sandy, solo, singing and playing the guitar here ...

  • One of the beautiful people

  • My best friend's favourite. Played it at his funeral. Thanks

  • @lordhuttonqc

How did he get his guitar in the coffin ?

  • @CharlieA

Funny boy. He was early for his funeral, but we played it anyway;-)

  • Lovely.....................:-)

  • Thanks for allowing me to relive the time I first heard her voice on Leige and Leif, best album of the seventies!

  • So sadly missed. My ex-wife was one of her nurses at The Royal Marsden.

God Bless Sandy...God must be short of Angels.

  • Thanks for the lovely photos of Sandy. Beautiful video. still feel sad about her even after all these years.

  • how did I miss this for all those years playing the Fairport, Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell versions...mind blowin'

  • @917028534

I agree! Except I don't know Joni Mitchell recorded this song (?).

If you like this version, please listen also to Sandy singing "Who knows..." at the BBC in 1973 (youtube.com/watch?v=5oBMDcLf6WA): simpler guitar, but incredibly emotional singing. No one can touch her here!

  • Still Magic, 40 years on

  • Happy to report that Dave Cousins is not only still among us, but he is actively performing as a solo artist and as leader of the Strawbs.

  • Beautiful voice. Lovely song.

  • So beautiful...it hurts

  • This has to be the topo version with the 12 string guitar. It rips my guts out even after hearing it so many times. It took a lot of listening to it until I could hear the whole song through. it's so achingly beautiful. God rest you Sandy.

  • @troughsnout Amidst so much of the static in my life, it's good to hear this. And... good to know that there are others who appreciate it. Sometimes I can feel quite alone in my musical tastes. Thankfully, we're not!

  • @kenorian

Have you had the opportunity to listen to Hudson Ford? Also excellent.

  • @troughsnout

I found out today that Dave Cousins of the Strawbs passed away in July, broke my heart.

  • @Iaido47 Dave is not gone; see my post above or check out his bio on Wikipedia.

  • @Iaido47

Dave is alive and well - he was when I had a meal with him!

  • @EQRSC

Yes, I am now well aware that Dave is alive. This was a hoax that I ran across on the WEB. I sincerely hope that I have the opportunity to dine with Dave soon, cause I'm getting tired of hearing that he's well, I'd like to see if for myself.

  • Thank you so much for this version...This is one of my 10 favorite songs of all time and to have this version now is very special...I too saw Fairport at Emergency thanks to Mike Schreibman....

  • Every version of this she sings that is posted on youtube is unique- all different. All beautiful.

    God bless youtube.

  • Forty years after seeing Fairport at Emergency in Washington, DC, WITHOUT Sandy (but WITH Richard) and I still cry that I never got to see her live -- and oh yeah, forty years later she is STILL my favorite female singer OF ALL TIME ... (and what incredible songs!)

  • joni leaking through, the fairports treat this fairly different

more sixties w/ joni leaking thru, two years later fairport dials the british isles on deeper more mythic level, she is incredible

  • She was an angel. One of the best singers ever.

  • I still have this wonderful album. She was a fine singer

  • Thanks for uploading this, I've never heard this version before, and it seems like a key one.
