I wonder if the present day Stones went back and re-recorded some of these songs what the reception would be like? The music today is so far removed from this but maybe they could crack through.
Slide on this song ; Imho ....... Brian Jones. Currently when this is played live today it is Ron Wood. Keith is not even close as a slide player to either Brian or Ron. ( Although I think Keith is a great player and songwriter. ) They went out of there way to remove Brian Jones off the studio books. Sadly. Don't trust everything your read.
I Have a version of this with the acoustic and electric..Brian is not playing oon this his acoustic is not there and it sounds like it needs him..Very thin in the middle. My version is full and thicker.Still this is very interesting.. mick dont even have the lyrics together...very cool high on drugs outtake.
@atticthoughts It definately wasnt Ry Cooder....Keith played almost allthe guitars on Let It Bleed....Keith wrote Gimme Shelter while Jagger was doing a movie....Brian was doing the harmonica on Gimme Shelter, Not Mick.....Anyway i have a different version of Family...listen to this one there is only one guitar,Not 2 guitars
@MrJsmyers I don't think it was Cooder either. Keith is the most likely candidate. But Brian isn't on Gimme Shelter. That is Mick. There are rumours though about alternate versions of Gimme Shelter and Honky Tonk Woman with Brian on guitar. I still hope that we will hear them some day.
@atticthoughts - Honky Tonk Women was the last track Brian Jones recorded with the Stones, on March 10 & 11, 1969. But his guitar was edited out and Mick Taylor's guitar was dubbed in at the last minute, before it's release as a single in the UK on July 3, 1969.
@wincanton2 Very interesting. Brian is supoosed to have played an early take of Honky Tonk Woman to his dad in early 69. That fits with the info you provided. I wonder if they erased his guitar or if it's still there on the multitracks?
@Cupidville It might be Keith....All the slide on that album sounds pretty much the same excepy Country Honk and Taylor played that...Jones is on the session of You got The Silver so It might have been Jones.....Never have seen anything about who played the slide.
Richards overdubbed most of what Brian did, whether it is because he wanted to psychologically erase Brian Jones both from the band and from his former (now Richard's) girlfriend Anita and/or because Brian Jones was too destroyed at the time to play well we don't know.
I Keep seeing that Keith does both guitars on everything back in the 60's and im here to tell you I have a book on the Stones sessions and it shows more than most books, brian played all over Beggars Banquet on every song so why would he not be on this? He could have been too fcked up or maybe the information is full of shit....who played the slide on "You Got The Silver"?
@MrJsmyers Don't trust books on Stones sessions in the 60's as there were no lists (like with the Beatles) on who played what.. You can only trust your ears. It's true that Brian played more on BB than he get credit for. Not on every song and no guitar except the slide on NE. But he's there n did also take guitar lessons in 68. There are rumours talking about early versions of Sympathy for the Devil, Honky Tonk Woman and Gimme Shelter with Brian on guitar. But don't expect them to get released.
@atticthoughts I Know music and distinct guitar players sounds..Mick Taylor i read like a book,Brians style is simple and to the point...He played acoustic on Sympathy for the Devil but it was removed, he played piano on Henrix's All along The Watchtower /Cut out. to say Brian only played on one track on this album is a lack of Knowledge and ear on your part.Guitar lessons? WTF? brian was known as the best slide player in London . He taught Keith the open tuning technique.
@MrJsmyers I am only talking about the released version of BB and only about guitar. AFAIK the only known guitar there played by Brian is the slide on No Expectations. But he is still heard playing other instruments all over the album. He also known to have played guitar/slide on unreleased songs and outtakes. In 68 Brian felt that his guitar playing had been suffering because of his interest in other instruments. The new sound that came with BB made him take guitar lessons to catch up.
@atticthoughts When have you ever seen Keith play slide guitar? Show me one clip, one video of him playing slide..i bet ya cant even find one.........All the concerts he has played,Ive never seen him play slide guitar and Beggars Banquet has slide on a lot of it..Did Keith play it? really why do you think Keith went and got Mick taylor? Cause Keith dont play slide dude...I cant figure out if Keith really played the slide on Let It Bleed....That slide sounds very different from BB...Do the math !
@MrJsmyers There's a CD-box set called Satanic Sessions that contains the sessions for Jigsaw Puzzle and you can hear that it's Keith who plays the slide guitar (and it's a struggle for him to nail it). It's true that he didn't play much slide but he did in 68/69 when Brian was absent and they hadn't found a replacement. I believe Ry Cooder was involved in some way but I don't know if he played on more songs than Memo From Turner.
@atticthoughts yeh maybe Keith played the slide on Jigsaw puzzle..it dont sound like Brian..It is sloppy work whoever did it..Raw and raunchy and Brian was sloppy at the time from drug use....Brian played on parachute woman..watch The Rock N Roll Circus..those 5 tracks show who did what and how they played them. i dont trust The Stones books mick Taylor got screwed on a few songs that he wrote/ brian got screwed a lot . Ry cooder is on a 2 or 3 Stones songs. Who's on slide on You Got The Silver
@MrJsmyers The RnRC doesn't really give away much since Brian's guitar is as good as unhearable on the official release on JJF, PW and YCAGWYW (big shame on whoever decided to mix it that way). Brian shines on NE though with the slide. On the album version of PW Brian is playing the harmonica in the background. Mick's harmonica is the loud one. But there's no evidence that Brian played guitar on PW. That said I think he played more but that they decided to cut him out.
I don't know who plays the slide on You Got the SIlver. It's said to be Keith. But I've never thought it sounded like Keith (or Brian for that matter). Yes, Taylor got screwed, so did Bill and probably Brian as well. The money is in the song writing and the glimmers were protective of that. They were/are just as greedy as they are talented.
@MrRobin14669 I saw that tour in Charlotte in 1999...Keith stole the show that night. they played 3 hours and 17 minutes in Charlotte, NC....Great gig
intriguing....it seems to share a bit of time with these gods of the music
