Well, in this video he didn't blow the whistle at all while he was near you. If he whistled for the crossing that you were near, it would've been loud. On this railroad, they sometimes do short whistle signatures but still at full blast. When I do crossing runbys, I'm usually right next to the tracks, close enough to feel the heat of the steam engine and feel the wind from the running gear. Imagine railfanning the way I do... The whistle's so loud!
I rode on this way back in 2001.

It was the first standard gauge steam runby I had ever seen, and I was very suprised when I found it was very QUIET!!

yeah its weird, this train was also my first standard gauge steam runby, and i always thought steam engines were LOUD
