As to why they don't use these full Respirator Systems when they know there's Toxic Gas I can't say? The Devices have an Alarm when You're running out of Air & You simply switch tanks to the extra full cylinder You brought with You. They could then find the nearest exit to get out & then come back with more Full Air Tanks. There's no reason to risk Workers lives for so little an expense. It's WRONG!

For That You need S.C.B.A. Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. SCBA, not S.C.U.B.A. Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. The Same SCBA the Firemen Use is fine. Those are Carbon Fiber Wrapped Tanks. You also need a Gas Meter for Safety!

Spike the syndicats my be there but they are very weak. there is no way my union leader would allow that type of action from me or the job. they would shut down the city and we would be sitting a city hall until the proper equipment was issued. OSHA would close the city down. the court system would be full of class action law suits. the families of the works would march the streets. An air purifying respirator. It did not permit one to abide extended periods in a gas cloud. The work was done outside and we ribbons and wind direction detectors (fancy name for 'stick that smokes while burning') to detect which direction the wind was moving. The idea was to escape, not sit there or we would have had SCBA which would have been nice because we had to hold our breath most of the time anyway.

Years ago, it was common for workers in the sewers to go in them without any protective gear but hardhats and boots. Like firefighters then, "leatherlungs" were the order of the day. These days, the job is no better, but gas masks are not that effective. Now Scott Airpacks are used as well as up to date protective gear. Serious Biohazard protocols.
