A Canadian, William Law joined the Church in 1836 and moved to Nauvoo in 1839. After having lived near Joseph Smith in Nauvoo, William wrote to a friend:

I have carefully watched his movements since I have been here, and I assure you I have found him honest and honourable in all our transactions which have been very considerable. I believe he is an honest upright man, and as to his follies let who ever is guiltless throw the first stone at him, I shant do it.

he was in jail because he had the press destroyed in nauvoo, illinois by his thugs (read about the danites). he destroyed the press because a close associate who had been booted was revealing the seedy truth not only about joseph smith's polygamy, but also his philandering with the housekeeping. the locals, like everywhere else, had enough of these lawless, perverted heretics. end of story, the "martyr" died in a shootout like a common criminal & fell out a window fittingly like jezebel

@turquoise770 You are biggoted, byas and twisted in your thinking, first of all Joseph Smith was not under legal arrest, the Mittamiss he was served was a faken written and signed by the Constable not a Judge in Court which was required by law in Illonois. There fore he was not in legal custody. Now that you know that as a fact I am sure you will pass it right on by. Otherwise you would have to admit you are wrong.

@turquoise770 Joseph Smith did not destroy the press in Nauvoo. It was voted on by . The City Council it declares the Expositor a public nuisance and threat to the peace. The City Council ordered the Constable to destroy it. There were sixteen episodes of mob violence against controversial newspapers in Illinois from 1832 to 1867, Presses which were a genuine risk to the public peace could be lgally wrecked. You cannot judge a society by todays so called politically correct bias. The facts.

@turquoise770 The associate you refer to is probably William C Bennett. In May, 1842, the treachery and rascality of a man whom the Mormon leader had befriended and loaded with honors, became known to his benefactor.

Governor Thomas Ford, in his history of Illinois, styles Bennett "probably the greatest scamp in the western country." But this was not until long after the Mormons, thrice victimized, had become aware of his villainy.

John C. Bennett... confessed to “wicked and licentious conduct toward certain females in Nauvoo,” and of past acts of exploiting of women he had attended as a doctor.. He had also frequented, and perhaps operated, a brothel.

Bennett,,, spoke widely about the “evils” of the Church and its leaders to non-member audiences. He also wrote a book and made a good deal of money telling stories against the Mormons

Joseph Smith had just watched his brother killed, John Taylor wounded, his life about to be taken by about 150 men in a mob looking for the blood of the innocents. Joseph defended himself as any sane person would. He did not fire through the door but after the Mob had attacked. Your words "fittingly like a jezebel " put you in the mind of the mob. As Christ says "If you think it" I guess you would have pulled the trigger on an innocent man?

you just need to go on wikipedia and read about joseph smith to see what a tragic wake this individual wrought through history. the fruit of that entire movement was nothing but constant corruption--first as a amateur grifter arrested for scams, then dragging thousands into that even bigger scam of lds--violence, greed, perversion, prejudice--all documented with their treacherous and treasonous dealings with banks, state officials, the federal govt. etc.and.this video glorifies that rascal!
