I think they don't have a definite relationship (unless the author said something about this). They're more like Tom and Jerry to me... they only serve to make you laugh. The rest is up to you...

As for the bickering... I'd like to remind people that it isn't something unique to couples (and all the couples don't fight like crazy either). Siblings or friends can do that too (my sister and I for example... we're total opposite of each other so we annoy each other).
