I am 20 years old I just graduated half way to a LPN. I am in college in my 2ed year I know I want to go into health care. I am debating to go for a nurse or doctor.
The man featured in this video is a nurse practitioner, which, despite its name, is actually between a nurse and a doctor. While the NP is a liscenced RN (registered nurse), he takes on a role more similar to a doctor in the ER where he might order, and as stated in the video, interpret diagnostic testing. Because of this unique role, in most situations, NPs dress much as doctors would: in "dress" attire. I hope this sufficiently answered your question!
Because nurse practitioners hold advanced degrees in nursing, they perform many of the same tasks as doctors. As such, they wear the same attire. I hope this helps.
@badermax: This is a Nurse Practitioner, who (despite sharing a common name with RNs) has a role that is much more comparable to a doctor. Because of this, they dress in "Dr" clothes, which tend to be business formal. I hope this helped!
@Tcareyful Also Australian Nurses generally wear business shirts and business pants or skirts in most areas except Theatre or Burns. The Shirts are usually colour coded depending on the nurse, usually red are NPs, black are CSCs, navy are RNs and green are ENs :)
in the us NP practices everywhere er , micu, icu, sicu, as long as the hospital provide the job, np are well use in the us for many role, where i work they are over 200 nps, i heard thats a good number
these days nurses can go very far. its no longer just a blue collar change the bedsheets job.this guy has such a large role in patient care, hes almost like a junior GP.he actually gets to diagnose simple injuries!
In Italy there are nurses that works in the emergency departments that actually practice "real" medical care for patients. In many areas there are nurse (from the ER or ICU) that rides in the ambulances and that that makes the ambulance to become an ATLS unit instead of just being a BTLS unit!
Siamo molto indietro...
@M3L4MP0 in the us we nurses we still give food, am care, clean and others because we are taking care of the patient, it is part of practicing nursing, sometime it is hard and frustrating because u cant do all at once and please everyone, but u have done all u can at the end of ur shift
@M3L4MP0 like they say, we are understaff and it is true some night i find myself answering phone, do social worker, housekeeping, technician, doctor roles. our mission is to take of the patients so when they ask for food i cant refused them, clean before sending a patient up to the floor, pain med while waiting for the doctor. some night we run up to 15 16 18 patients, and they talk about safety, give me a break. i am pissed because now we r doing some thing that take longer to do and harder
Awesome video about advanced nurse practice, yeah that's right in the U.S, N.P have been practicing for a while, and I am sure that the scope of practice and NP will make huge improvements in Australia, please folks nurses are not and will never be bitches, this is a joke, be serious in life.
I am a student RN and I want to become a nurse practitioner myself!! And i live in Australia as well....its better than taking abuse from those catty bitches who call themselves RN's!! And believe me i have suffered at their hand!! Ahhh...nurse practitioner heaven :D
@TheeOz may be u did not know that but a NP is a registered nurse their is no way around it, NP are RN with advanced education from a master program, u are a rn practicing advanced nursing practice, so u rn = u bitchy. all rn are bitches and we know it, a career predominantly populated by FEMALE, hellllloooooo
@ANIMEGIRL385 u r a rocky so deal with it (joke). i think every new nurse experienced the bitchiness from rn and it had to do with control or empowerment. i am a full time nurse 12 hr shift night time and studying for my NP. advice work as a rn before ur np, u learn so much, like how the floor are run, how to use the cardiac monitor, insert and iv line, irrigate catheter
I have changed my mind about the MP thing. I was talking to a senior nurse who was training me in manual handling and he told me that being an NP in Australia is the worst thing ever and that we don't have that much more freedom than a standard RN does. I will keep my options open for what I want to specialise in however I will work as an RN on thewards for a few years regardless. Best of luck with your course :)))
Well presented, great argument for NPs. Will consider as am a male nurse in juncture of my career up stateside. Also as an extreme sports enthusiast, wonder if the Aussies get more than their usual share of traumas. LOL. Thanks again Luke!
Interesting. Is this new to Australia in the last year or so? We've been doing this for years in the US. Seems like my scope of practice is much larger in the States as well. Always curious how other countries do things.
Hi Nurse Practitioners are relatively new in Australia. Their scope has been very limited and it is slowly changing. The first Nps were introduced in NSW under the direction of the then Chief Nurse Mary Chorella. It is only this year we are seeing clinics being run by nps and the medicare register will also help. Health services are reluctant to employ them because it is difficult to charge for their services.
this is really good stuff im wanteing to become a rn nut though that its too long and stuff then i see this and read about it its great but is ther alota jobs like this??? cos i dnt wana be left out and also wat about a certified registerd nurse anthisiest??
If we could just halve the number of injuries caused by stupidity, inattention, alchohol, poor eating habits etc then our ED dept's would'nt be under so much strain.

The Nurse Practitioner program I completed was a dual FNP/ACNP program. I went back later for my post-masters as an ACNP-Intensivist.

@lovelynurse10 and supporting staff, what does? Nothing?
Even in Italy there is the support staff that deals with hygiene, food etc.
Well, this makes me feel better, because I thought Saxon countries these practices had been entrusted to other figures!

@lovelynurse10 Better (for me)! Are you sure you work in the U.S. and not in Italy? :) The situation you describe is typical of Italian hospital!
I still think the U.S. situation is very different from one state to another, right?!
