I am curious why so many mothers say this same thing. "I want my son to match his father.'. Why do these women concern themselves with that and why do they find that important. They don't think to make their daughter's vagina match their own. Thought never crosses their mind; to suggest it would be insane, right? I have 3 daughters. We do not match, they do not match each other. Why is matching ever even a factor in this decision? That is ridiculously superficial.

Their female children do not have breasts and if mom has had implants the difference is going to be even more pronouced. Do we give babys breast implants? Adult women have pubic hair. Nope. The opposite is true, and common sense can tell you that. Whole, intact skin is always going to have less risk of infection that a large surgical area, especially an open wound in a diaper covered in urine and feces. Babies die in the US every single year from infection after being circumcised. Do some more research and use some common sense.

They simply cannot anesthetize it adequately, and the pain remains during the entire healing process each time the baby pees or poops into the wound. Just type in "circumcision" here on youtube, and watch a video of the procedure. I am quite sure after watching it, you won't want to do that to your son- for any reason.

Unfortunately, I'm responding a year later but maybe other people will read my response. The thing is, a kid that young doesn't have any reason to worry about cleaning. My son is six years old and he just rinses with plain water while in the shower without retracting. He hardly ever bothers to retract. Before boys hit puberty, there is no real reason to clean under the foreskin unless they want to.
Respond to this video... One of the biggest problems intact boys face is when people think they have to clean under the foreskin and so retract them. When a little boy is born, his foreskin is fused to the rest of his penis, like a fingernail to a finger. Every time it is retracted before his adhesions have dissolved causes damage and the build up of scar tissue.
The bottom line is, parents never need to bother with retracting and cleaning their son's penis. By the time it really needs to be cleaned, he'll be doing it himself. For the time being, just rinse it off with a bit of water in the bath or shower.

I am an atheist, also a nurse practicioner, and medically, I can say a penis without the foreskin is much easier to clean and is more sanitary. But the comparison argument is just plain silly and kind of perverted.
The intact penis is naturally clean. The common view of the penis or the foreskin as dirty is unscientific and irrational. You should only be cleaning what is seen. The prepuce (foreskin) works very similarly to the eye lid. Leave it alone! and for gods sake when you put in a catheter DO NOT RETRACT!! No attempt should be made to retract the foreskin before the penis has fully developed.

Gnomad83, cleaning an intact penis is not difficult at all. Most men have a foreskin and they have no problem. Brushing your teeth is more work. Women's genitals are more difficult to keep clean but they still manage just fine.

Again - I am sorry you didn't like your parents. Don't know where you got your fatality figures, but there was only one documented death from circumcision in the US in the past 80 years - and that occured before 1951. Meanwhile - the medical complication rate requiring hospitalization for pediatric penile problems is 1 in 10 for uncircumcised vs 1 in 20 for circumcised. Slight advantage goes to circumcision.
Basically where this stands is there is about a 1 in 500 chance of a minor complication from a circumcision (in America) which is weighed against a doubling of the chances of a pediatric penile problem from not circumcising. (According to the Wiswell study) The study found that for every 2 minor complications - you basically prevent one instance of penile cancer. Not enough to require it but certainly the benefits slightly outweigh the risks
The stat I would like to see is out of the men who are circumcised - how many are unhappy with their circumcisions and wish they hadn't gotten it. That would need to be compared to the stats for those who weren't circumcised who wish they had been. Because a certain percentage of this effect would necessarily be a "grass is always greener" effect and the comparison of the 2 figures would be revealing.
The problem with this is that one group can do something about it the other can't in any practical way. How about nobody gets circumcised (without actual clinical need) and if they choose it then it's their choice.
That's pretty vague. However you should know that:
1. The American Cancer Society does not support the use of circumcision as a prophylactic of penile cancer, tinyurlDOTcom/mjbqmu
2. Even if it did, Gardasil (now approved for boys) is more than effective to manager the increasingly rare cases of HPV related cancers in men.
3. I am now sure what Wiswell has to do with cancer, he looked at UTI and our change understanding of UTI and renal disease in boys is weakening the case for circumcision.

The anti-circ movement needs to provide rational reasons why not to do a circ. Just saying you are unhappy enough to sue your parents who are dead isn't enough. You need to provide comparable statistics showing the percent of men circumcised who wish they never had been. Or the rate of complications that would make the cost benefit decision sway against circs.
It amazes me when women say they circumsized their sons to match their fathers. I've heard it more than once, but the first time floored me. My response, "What's wrong with matching shirts?"
I did A LOT of research to make my decision for my now 4 year old boy. All of the anti-circ info we found was from wierd people with wierd issues. On the other hand, both my husband and I know men who had to get circumcised as adults and we did not want our boy to ever have to go through something like that. We gave him a partial circumcision (he still has a bunch of foreskin flopping around). Not everyone makes this decision blindly and there are some really good reasons why to have it done.

You spared your child from going thru circumcision as an adult by making him go thru circumcision as an infant. I've been to many pro-circumcision sites & the bulk of their arguments were perpetuating myths like supposed cleanliness & how he should look like daddy to avoid teasing by circumcised boys. All these sites made no effort to even explain the anatomy and function of the foreskin which shows they want people to be ignorant of the benefits the foreskin provides.

But unlike the anti-sites, there are actually some very informative sites about circumcision that provide a lot of useful information. I didn't find a single anti-circ site with anything but wierdness in it and anti-circ myths that aren't any better then the procirc myths.

Did you watch the YouTube videos I suggested? 85% of the men in the world are not circumcised and they don't suffer from all the ailments circumcision advocates claim. There is no reason to take a knife to a baby's genitals and cut anything off. Circumcision in all its forms is barbaric and inhumane.

First there are actual medical conditions that can make circumcision necessary (not things like HIV transmission rates, but actual life threatening problems that affect boys while they are maturing that require circumcision)
2nd: not everyone who circumcises their sons do so in ignorance. I did my research and am very very happy with our decision. And judging from my sons behavior - he is happy with how he is too.

I had no strong feelings pro or con on this issue so I did my research and decided to circumcise based on what I found. Whole, intact skin is always going to have less risk of infection that a large surgical area, especially an open wound in a diaper covered in urine and feces. They simply cannot anesthetize it adequately, and the pain remains during the entire healing process each time the baby pees or poops into the wound. Just type in "circumcision" here on youtube, and watch a video of the procedure. I am quite sure after watching it, you won't want to do that to your son- for any reason.

Before boys hit puberty, there is no real reason to clean under the foreskin unless they want to.

Respond to this video... One of the biggest problems intact boys face is when people think they have to clean under the foreskin and so retract them. When a little boy is born, his foreskin is fused to the rest of his penis, like a fingernail to a finger. Every time it is retracted before his adhesions have dissolved causes damage and the build up of scar tissue.

The bottom line is, parents never need to bother with retracting and cleaning their son's penis. By the time it really needs to be cleaned, he'll be doing it himself. For the time being, just rinse it off with a bit of water in the bath or shower.

I am an atheist, also a nurse practicioner, and medically, I can say a penis without the foreskin is much easier to clean and is more sanitary. But the comparison argument is just plain silly and kind of perverted.

The intact penis is naturally clean. The common view of the penis or the foreskin as dirty is unscientific and irrational. You should only be cleaning what is seen. The prepuce (foreskin) works very similarly to the eye lid. Leave it alone! and for gods sake when you put in a catheter DO NOT RETRACT!! No attempt should be made to retract the foreskin before the penis has fully developed.

My wife had a difficult birth with my son. And it was after this trauma (when I was exhausted) that they came to me and told me I should get him circumcised. I agreed. Years later I watched Penn & Teller's Bullshit (on circumcision) and wept. I had unknowingly mutilated my son. Don't mutilate yours. If only I had known before my son was born.

Yes, Gnomad83, victims of genital mutilation can sue those responsible for cutting up their genitals. The doctors ruined the person's genitals so they should be held responsible for their actions. Suing for medical malpractice isn't about "ruining a doctors career". It's about preventing the mutilator from doing it again. If the parents are unrepentant for their actions, they should be held responsible as well.

Gnomad83, cleaning an intact penis is not difficult at all. Most men have a foreskin and they have no problem. Brushing your teeth is more work. Women's genitals are more difficult to keep clean but they still manage just fine.

Again - I am sorry you didn't like your parents. Don't know where you got your fatality figures, but there was only one documented death from circumcision in the US in the past 80 years - and that occured before 1951. Meanwhile - the medical complication rate requiring hospitalization for pediatric penile problems is 1 in 10 for uncircumcised vs 1 in 20 for circumcised. Slight advantage goes to circumcision.

Basically where this stands is there is about a 1 in 500 chance of a minor complication from a circumcision (in America) which is weighed against a doubling of the chances of a pediatric penile problem from not circumcising. (According to the Wiswell study) The study found that for every 2 minor complications - you basically prevent one instance of penile cancer. Not enough to require it but certainly the benefits slightly outweigh the risks

The stat I would like to see is out of the men who are circumcised - how many are unhappy with their circumcisions and wish they hadn't gotten it. That would need to be compared to the stats for those who weren't circumcised who wish they had been. Because a certain percentage of this effect would necessarily be a "grass is always greener" effect and the comparison of the 2 figures would be revealing.

That's pretty vague. However you should know that:
1. The American Cancer Society does not support the use of circumcision as a prophylactic of penile cancer, tinyurlDOTcom/mjbqmu
2. Even if it did, Gardasil (now approved for boys) is more than effective to manager the increasingly rare cases of HPV related cancers in men.
3. I am now sure what Wiswell has to do with cancer, he looked at UTI and our change understanding of UTI and renal disease in boys is weakening the case for circumcision.

The anti-circ movement needs to provide rational reasons why not to do a circ. Just saying you are unhappy enough to sue your parents who are dead isn't enough. You need to provide comparable statistics showing the percent of men circumcised who wish they never had been. Or the rate of complications that would make the cost benefit decision sway against circs.

I did A LOT of research to make my decision for my now 4 year old boy. All of the anti-circ info we found was from wierd people with wierd issues. On the other hand, both my husband and I know men who had to get circumcised as adults and we did not want our boy to ever have to go through something like that. We gave him a partial circumcision (he still has a bunch of foreskin flopping around). Not everyone makes this decision blindly and there are some really good reasons why to have it done.

You spared your child from going thru circumcision as an adult by making him go thru circumcision as an infant. escape - as you point out there are definitely procirc sites that are as useless as the anti-circ sites. But unlike the anti-sites, there are actually some very informative sites about circumcision that provide a lot of useful information. I didn't find a single anti-circ site with anything but wierdness in it and anti-circ myths that aren't any better then the procirc myths.

Did you watch the YouTube videos I suggested? 85% of the men in the world are not circumcised and they don't suffer from all the ailments circumcision advocates claim. Look - my only point is that not everyone who circumcises their boy does so in ignorance or for stupid reasons like I want him to look like his dad or for religious reasons.
I had no strong feelings pro or con on this issue so I did my research and decided to circumcise based on what I found. Having had to sort through a lot of nonsense, I can still say that the anti-sites don't provide any good reasons not to aside from a variety of personal anecdotes. And stats that don't mean anything.

jwhispers - you asked why I am even bothering to discuss this issue. It is because of the legislative agenda these individuals with a lot of anger issues with there parents have. They want to basically make it illegal to be a parent. They have bills they are trying to get passed in congress that would criminalize parenthood. While I don't personally care what someone decides about circ I do think that it should be legal. And that attempts to criminalize it are really dangerous.
