  • I do think she can be good for some funny stagings, but in a vocal or musical level... come on! I mean, this could be alright for a student, but I don't think it's something to be shown by a professional singer.

  • Horrible!! She should stay in the Whitney Houston territory and leave baroque gems untouched. Yikes!

  • Nice voice... but it was all the same. No dinamics, no pianissimi, always the same and again and again. Is she having a career because she looks good?... that´s what it seems to me cause there´s nothing extraordinary in her voice or singing. Just a nice voice. Is was boring!

  • kill me....this is hell......

  • any woman who can truly sing earns my respect...

  • delightful

  • I loved it. I too think she truly understands the meaning and the emotion which Handel wrote and wished to convey.

  • fuck those contertenors, i love female voice, hers and bartoli's.

  • @51m0n77 well, perhaps you would prefer "...not to my taste..."

  • She sings so beautifully, and so emotionally, one gets lost in the song. She also looks stunning. She looks in good shape, has a beautiful face, and carries and moves herself with sophistication. The dress is lovely and has a hint of seductiveness with the one shoulder partly off. (This is a style for those who think her dress is "crooked")

Will listen to this over and over again. I love it.

  • Nothing special, but she looks great

  • @jakeyell yeah she looks fantastic but your criticism seem a little harsh.....

  • Please listen to FLORENCE QUARTARARO sing CARE SELVE. THAT is SINGING

  • Sublime. The best I have heard. This song is simple - but the simple things are also often the hardest. I love the way she interprets both the horror of the prison, and the love she feels for freedom...

  • Sublime. The best I have heard.

  • Great interpretation! She seems to imitate the broken voice of someone who is crying, really touching...

  • pretty her voice & the dress,

  • I would guess that you don't like her hair color either?

  • Can someone explain to me why no one sings the recitative of this song? I love it,but it is incomplete, like starting a story in the middle. Elaine

  • @elaine9010 I don't get that either, I'll sing the recit and put it online. It's a beautiful intro to the aria

  • Breathtaking......thank you for posting!! Wish I could play it on a loop...forever!

  • De Niesse as Good as always!!! Brava!

  • wow, after knowing what this song is about this singers tries and does a great job with this piece.

  • Mi amada amiga Danielle

  • bravooo

  • 4:17 Her dress looks fucked up. It's all crocked.

  • Very pleasant overall.

  • prachtig weergegeven, hier kan ik van genieten . . . .

  • lots of room for improvement, but at least Ms. de Niese tried this difficult piece

  • I think she's better as in opera than in recitals. Please remember that this is live and most recordings aren't (they are heavily editted) so try not to compare this to non live recordings.

  • Wow I love this song and she is beautiful....

  • i love that people hate on her...it's ridiculous. She signs it very well...of ocurse not the best..but give her a break. She put her heart into singing this.

  • @JavierMartinDuarte I agree completely! People are way too hard on her!

  • I first heard this played in a very strange anddark movie with William Dafao "Antichrist" I loved than and love it now

  • intonation is normal

    nice

  • not bad voice bad intonation, but less injectables please, shame those are permanent, why would someone do that to their lips and face?

  • @risan01 You're an idiot.

  • @gobitz Yeah, you should queue down the hall you fat twat....

  • she has a REALLY BAD INTONATION, Ican't stand hearing those flat notes

  • @zazza32145 Please upload your wonderful singing video so that we may listen

  • This wonderful woman has alot of haters....true the golden age of opera has now past, but these young artist are doing very well, shez bouyant, agile, and her technique is based off the Italian method which is different than then the Austrian Style, she reminds me of Cecelia Bartoli

  • Great version. I like it !

  • I am thinking that maybe this singer was having an off day and was using too much dramma to help the voice along. Or maybe she is lacking technique for this very exposed peice. To my ear it was very off stylistically, The whole thing is missing elegance. And I feel the accent on libertà isn't correct.( she borught the b in too soon. The dramma was more for Verdì but this is Handel.

  • i hear a lot of people talk about her technique and that it will damage her chords or something later on...im just learning about stuff like that...can someone please explain??

  • The emphasis is never on the voice--it's always on HER, on her face. Are these her "handlers'" decisions or is that her personality?

  • Maravilhosooo!!!!

  • i feel as though she sings this song beautifully.

I dont like all the ridicule about how shes dressed.

These videos are here to critique then singing, and let people know your opinion on that.

She sings this nicely, she understands what the words mean, and she uses that to put some emotion in, and i like that :)

  • je n'aime pas, scolaire, pesant......

  • There's a disturbing lack of breath support.

  • Breath support isn't the only thing she lacks... try some talent/skill I could do without the grotesque faces as well. no need to look like a third-rate pornstar having fake orgasms on every word.

  • *DIES* That too. XD

  • Sad but true, why is this woman's beauty enough to overcompensate for the fact that she is no where near a world class voice. Good lord, opera is dying.

  • Also.. Opera has been dying for a long time.. Have you heard the Met lately? I can't tolerate the minor 9th vibrato they all seem to use.

  • @gayboyTX minor ninth? umm no that'd be rediculous...btw kabuki actresses are beautiful

  • @JavierMartinDuarte Of course I exaggerate about the minor ninth vibrato. but it gets the point across. The vibrato I hear every time I catch part of a Met broadcast is horribly wide and unnatural.

  • Too much gyrating, a stiller body would have produced better breath control and a more silvery sound. IMO The aria is more about internal anguish and resignation not Verdian drama.

  • her voice is weird, in the sense that it seems to get such varied responses from people. I've never hear a performer with such a black and white division of people either loving or hating their voice.

  • She looks f*cking hot. Also she's a great Soprano. When she comes to my area, than I'm going to her concert.

  • this performance is nor average at all you liberal shmuck

  • An average performance at best - she looks physically great though :-)

  • really beautiful but my only problem is its way to slow its dragging and its losses quality there. Also if she relaxed her jaws more it would sound breathtaking by clenching the jaw its not as free as it could sound. However she has done this song better then anyone else i have heard.

  • With the awful piano (I know he can play, but it was never meant for piano) it's too romantic for my taste. This aria is been done so many times before, and this isn't the best sung IMHO. I hope I never have to listen to this version again.

  • ok ok ive listened to this about 3x now the more i listen the more her voice annoys me I think its the straigth tone it just urks my nerves so bad ugh...

  • Is that dress meant to fall off her shoulder? I've just seen her in same dress singing same aria on BBC3 Youtube and it was falling off there! If not then it's a rather shabby attempt to sex up the presentation. I agree with the other comments here - I think there is too much emotion put into the aria rather than letting it speak for itself. I prefer Deborah York's interpretation - see verey strange production with David Daniels (who is fab as well).

  • she is so beautiful!!!... wonderful voice to!!!

  • Beautiful and inspiring, quite a performance in the setting of a small studio with distracting background

  • I was reading your comment and I must agree with you , she is a beautiful girl that happens to sing as well. Her voice is not properly placed and if she doesn ´t work on it , she might have troubles later on.

    Har det sa bra !

  • The tempo is to slow, it's not majestic it is, what's the musical term for "standing still" the next note doesn't come. I find that I am listening to the rest-notes instead of the song. One note towards the end "sospiri" at 3.14 is a quite bad miss-out . Apart from that a beautiful and skillful singer. I look on the side while listening not to see all the weeping. A really sad person doesn't do that. Do they??

  • 3:14 isnt really a miss-out on the note. If you studied Baroque musical style/composition, then she did something that would typically have been done. Baroque composers put dissonances on strong beats (beats 1 or 3) and resolved them softly which is what Danielle de Niese did there.

  • You might very well be right there. It is so fragrant that she would notice. The dissonance cuts through and if it is the intention of the composer then then she fulfills that. My compliments Danielle ..(bowing)

  • Indeed 3.14 imay be seen as a dissonance on a strong beat or even a kind of appogiatura but I must still concur with flemingway: It really doesn't sound well, it's a coma (1/4 tone) that generates too much instability at a crucial moment (the end of the musical sentence). The singers of that time used the coma in trills at the end but never this bad.

  • Nice interpretation, but there is some work. First off, I do prefer stronger voices for this aria. There has to be some desperation and desire in the voice, but no drama.

That's what makes this part so difficult. If you add too much power, the "weeping" loses its subtlety. On the other hand, the aria needs some passionate drive, and often singers seem to forget this.

All in all, a good attempt, but near the end she misses some steps in the tempo and the timbre.

  • Voice very uneven; and why cannot she let Handel´s wonderful vocal line convey the feeling, instead of the histrionics.Kills rather than intensifies the emotional content. Maybe I am cynical, but would she be so much flavour of the moment if she wasn´t so good looking?

  • i think it is called acting. i am enchanted by her and it is not because she is beautiful - which she clearly is- but because she is so good

  • A beautiful rendition by a beautiful lady

  • She is very like Lesley Garrett was 10 years ago, in singing and in personality. Let's see if she is as versatile also. See "Lesley Garrett - Handel: Rejoice Greatly".

  • I like it. Her song is powerful and sweet as well.

  • It is taken a little slow - that's all.

  • Well for a young girl that is weeping whilst singing about her ill fate and her sadness and is contemplating suicide, I think one shouldn't rush the tempo. I think in fact this is tempo is adequate, and interpreted in the correct sad and musing mood. I have heard her sing this aria more times and this is not her best version of this, but I do love her voice. And yes, she will improve. And no, she isn't wearing a push-up bra. Just saying. :)

  • Well I guess I should have put my comment where I meant it to be - after the one saying it was a horrible interpretation. The only objection I have to this is that it is slightly ponderous, otherwise she sings like an angel! I saw her on TV singing this with a Baroque ensemble, a little bit faster, and it was unbelievable.

  • Aha, fair enough lol, that changes things

I saw that too, I think! Have you seen her in the BBC 'The History of British Music'? It is downloadable from the website. It's unbelievable :)

  • Yes, it was that BBC series.

  • I saw that and thought it was wonderful as well. :)

  • Have just found this young lady she has such control and emotion and will like a good wine, mature with time. She does, however do more than justice to this wonderful aria

  • well, she's pretty successful.

  • Moet je bij opera altijd zo moeilijk kijken, of alleen bij deze? ;-)

  • Bravo!!!!! ,,,,,,,,,,,

  • that's it! Im going to go to the gym, straighten my hair, wear a pushup bra and become a famous opera singer.

  • Jealous? I think so.

  • this interpretation is very genious, it touchs my heart, spokes from my soul. Danielle express with her voice and body what I feel hearing this wonderful aria by Handel

  • this is an absolutely horrible interpretation of this peice

  • Not horrible... but it doesnt do the piece justice.

I think the over working of the jaw is a little distracting....

She seems to have a lot of tension in the body, and her head is tilted back... shocking for singing...

  • troppo lento il tempo...peccato...mi sorprende lockwood che e musicista di esperienza e qualita...lei e semplicemente bella da morire....ciao

    amman2003

  • this is genious... wish I could get the high one's as she does..

  • hi friends someone knows where can i find the notebook from this song please??

  • google "lascia ch'io pianga score"

  • @saturn999999999 IMSLP has it in e-flat major

  • ahhh yeah,, she looked real...well not very pretty when she sings..

  • Who looks good with their mouths wide open? She's gorgeous now and probably always will be, maybe in ten years she'll be able to sing.

  • I like the way this saraband REALLY comes accross dance-like. Very nice.

  • I love how the cameraman keeps going on to buses as they pass the window! Lol!!!

  • TOO MUCH faces expressions ...!!!

  • i loved the trill at then end of the song. it was perfect. and it was refreshing that she's actually putting herself in the songwriters shoes and showing emotion, but not so much that it's overdone.

    good job!

  • estupenda!

  • merci beaucoup!!

  • I saw her in Orfeo ed Euridice at the Met Opera. Perfect duo with Stephanie Blythe.

  • I just saw her recital at UC Berkeley this afternoon. Her voice is really phenomenal. I didn't hear any unusual vibrato, and I was sitting right in front. She seems much more at ease than she is in this clip. She really feels the emotion of her songs.

  • I think she was singing in Amsterdam :P

  • To much vibrato, and the speed of vibrato is the same al the way through. Somewhat destroys the very nice tone of her voice. In my opinion

  • Brava Patricia, Bella mu!sica Grazia Francioli Bitttner

  • she should try Puccini cause baroque is not her thing

  • Oh no. . . Extremely disappointing - overwrought and we won't even mention the singing.

  • oman, slow...and very unimpressive.

  • look at the train passing by behind her, as if inside the time stands still and outside life just goes on

  • amazing with great emotion n passion!!Bravo!!

  • I agree--just saw the HD of Orfeo she did so well! Brava Grazia F.

  • Ah, Niese's Handel Aria segment is better. And maybe not a fair comparison but, Cecilia Bartoli's version tops this.

  • Almost any other version tops this!

  • I like her voice and I agree with Cristina. Also, seems like she played it safe - didn't deviate much from the original music.

  • wayyy too slow :(

  • Saludos desde INGTK Lima Peru gracias por enrriquecer nuestras almas

  • I am sorry guys but but I fell a sleep here

  • This piece was taken slower than I am used to, and sounds like a drag. If the tempo was brought up a little faster, she wouldn't have sounded so flat at times and her voice would've had more resinance. Just a little work can be done to improve her projection and vocal quality. She is definitely on her way, just working more at it will get her to perfection.

And her facial expression made us feel her desire to be free and have peace.

    -Cristina

  • te klassieke interpretatie;..tis en blijft barok....

  • Ze heeft zo'n mooie stem. Ik heb deze aflevering gezien. Was meteen we van haar. Een week later had ik haar cd in huis ^^.

  • magnifique

  • ahhhhh diphthongs....love her voice though...

  • Interesting how vicious the comments about this lady are. There *is* something there, but she needs an unforgiving vocal coach to enhance her strengths and minimize her weaknesses, control the ornamentation and OTT emoting--all at the risk, I know, of erasing her spontaneity and sincerity. Give DdN 5 years and see how she evolves. New stars deserve encouragement and constructive criticism, not bitchiness!

  • just Perfect ...

  • I've been going through a lot of the comments on her videos and it seems like all people want to do is knit pick her performance rather than sitting back and enjoying the whole piece. She's simply an emotional singer it's not necessarily to cover up her imperfections, its just how she performs. A lot of voice teachers would consider that to be a good thing. The ability to step out of ones self in order to evoke the true nature of the song is a quality few young singer posses

  • Agreed, its like a no-talent art critic would would rather appraise a painting than sit back and absorb its beauty.

  • I agree, try to listen at it without seeing de Niese

  • I'm doing just that....

    here are my thoughts:

She sounds whiny, particularly, [i] vowels.

Her vibrato is inconsistent in terms of application to line and rate (speed).

She had a nice trill at the end of the B section.

She isn't demonstrating legato (maybe that's how it's written though...)

She's really singing right now... it's near the end of the piece.

Maybe that's the real issue. She gets so caught up in "being Baroque" she can't Just Sing. It would create some issues. It makes sense to me.

  • I agree with many of the comments made here and am wondering if the emotional exaggeration is an attempt to cover up what many have noticed- technical problems.

Granted, she is a talented lady in a place few have been and many have tried, but insofar as style, the Piano Forte as one gentlmen had mention coupled with this kind of romantic singing in the Baroque period, isnt ok. It can be argued that this type of evolution is great for the discussion, but in doing so traditions been lost.

  • I really DON'T like it:/:/:/

  • how can they dare make it with a pianoforte?

It is not fair to the prime want! And she sings like a romantic singer! It's ugly!

  • Just because I dont like this particular aria, doesnt mean I trash all of her work. I really liked her Cleopatra, and I hope she will get a lot better since she is so talented.

As for the babe thing, frankly, I have seen more beautiful sopranos; she is exotic in that realm of caucasian females that opera tends to be, but I dont consider her a real beauty.

    peace.

    Alejandra.

  • Here's a short sample of a fairly well-known singer doing this. I'm curious what you think of this version. Youtube's encoders do some odd things to the sound, it sounds like some kind of badly applied compression algorithm. The &fmt=18 at the end gives stereo audio.

Obviously replace the (dot) with a .

    youtube(dot)com/watch?v=r_sCYsGRyQE&fmt=18

  • Maybe I am doing it wrong, I cant get to this adress... care to leave a message in my channel?

    thanks.

    Alejandra.

  • I assume by now you've listened to it. What did you think of it? Other than YouTube's encoders doing odd things to the dynmic levels.

  • Yes, I have listened to it and I am still not convinced... sorry... but I really enjoyed her "V'adoro..", you know, when she played Cleopatra... but this, no no no no no...

  • Who do you think it is singing?

  • I think is De Niese...

  • Okay, a bit of trickery on my part. It's actually this exact same performance to which I added strings, reverb and stereo ambience to see if being in a different setting altered your perception.

    ;-)

  • And you're forgetting a very crucial fact - she's an absolute babe.

    ;-)

  • I don't see what it has to do with classical singing! so now to be a opera singer you have to be a babe? ok so i think Monserat caballe is one of the greatest babe ever!

  • climatechangekills - You'll notice my tongue firmly tucked into my cheek.

  • bad tone production etc. that would be a valid criticism, but I don't believe anyone could make a valid claim for that here.

Presumably she's studied with one or more teachers who know opera and has been achieving results that pleased them. Looking at her background it's clear she's not considered some lightweight amateur, she's certainly no pseudodiva like Charlotte Church, Hayley Westenra etc. I.e. at her level I would expect she has a solid grasp of how to approach an aria.

  • So I believe to base your expectations on what you think the original composers were after is flawed to say the least. Let's face it, if Caruso's exact clone with his exact technique showed up today, would he lauded as a god of a singer?

Another problem I have with this kind of critique is it presumes there's something obviously flawed with the performance which I don't believe is supported by the evidence. If she were showing gross flaws in basic technique - poor intonation, -cont-

  • Did I say anything about composers?

YEs, I do base my expectations on that information and on the evidence of other renditions, since you explain what you call "evidence": Sutherland, Sills, Troyanos, Kozena, Flemming, Battle... I dont know if they used the historical background to achieve their renditions of Handel, but I can hear in their voices a lot of versatility. Sometimes Ms. De Niese can do that, sometimes she cant.

  • She delivered it as if she meant it. I believed her. The piano performance was a perfect complement. A beautiful rendition!

  • heel mooi!!!

prachtig gezongen, eerlijk, tmocht een beetje triester ;-)

  • je la préfere dans les airs gais et rapides.....c'est une fille tellement positive qu'elle n'arrive pas a etre émouvante dans les airs triste.......

  • nope... does not do it for me... too much... this is a difficult aria, very emotional but very subtle at the same time, and Miss De Niese fails to do both here, at least for my taste..

  • alejandra379: Have you listened to Becky Jane Taylor's shorter version of this aria?

  • no, Im afraid not.. is it posted in youtube?
