People always talk about how much Martina improved but she really just got fitter and was able to better play her game. But if you watch early clips of Evert she's like a different person here. She hits the ball completely differently, takes more chances, is so much faster than she used to be. Compare this to the 1973 WImbledon final and it's hard to believe it's the same Chris Evert. She would have demolished King then if she played like this. After she changed racquets she was better even.

Interesting that Chris and Martina are sitting under the umpire chair talking & laughing after the match before the trophy presentation. They really were something else...
@SchlagerOskar I agree with you, Schlager. It was part of the romantic age of tennis, the 20th century. I never heard this phrase before by any chair referee. "Thank you, linesmen and ballgirls". Interesting moment of tennis.
This tennis is soo much preferable to watching the Hermaphrodite twins Venus and Serena, lazy as Sharapova, mentally unstable Ivanovic, as well as Jankovic. All of the players these days are lazy and boring as fuck to watch!!! Svetlana, Dinara, Wozniackim these days you can become number one without winnings any major tournaments and Dinara's confidence is a joke!!!!!!!!!
How nice to see two finalists sit down and chat after a final. When are we EVER going to see something like THAT in today's game?
Can you picture Serena and Sharapova sitting down next to each other and chat after a final? NOT!
In 82, Chris and Martina went thru a rough patch in their rivalry. Nancy Liebermann (who was Martina's lover at the time) was a negative influence in making Chris to be the EVIL ONE in Martina's mind. Luckily their rivalry / friendship has survived outside influences.
Martina always seemed to be a sore looser when it came to loosing, her expressions showed it. Chris was total oppisite of always smiling and keeping her cool win or loose. I'm pleased that Chris was able to beat Martina on her own court.
I think you mean "loser". Obviously, Martina wasn't happy to lose, but even here you can see she says something nice to Chris at the net when they shake hands and they both smile.
An incredible sight - Chris Evert uses wood to beat Martina using graphite on grass!! Excellent aggressive all-court tennis from Mrs Lloyd. She also handed Martina's ass to her on a plate in the 1988 Australian semi-final, only then she was using graphite of course. Would love to see the last set of their wonderful 1981 match, when Martina came out the winner.
GO CHRIS GO CHRIS...she would lose the next 13 matches.. yes 13 matches... to Martina. This is Dec "82 and she would not beat Martina until Jan "85. Martina is a good sport at the end.
i just wonder the big presentation cup is it real silver or gold or just metal i will thank you for enlighten me on this

Delightful, gracious and generous opponents - the greatest rivalry in sports imo.

it's a testament to Chris Evert that she won this using a wood racket. This was just about the beginning of Martina's "bionic" phase...

God, these ladies were so elegant and graceful both in win and defeat, with evident respect for one another.

Martina became invincible for a time after this match.
It doesn't take away how well Chris played in this match though. And anyone who never saw her play in person can't know how hard she hit the ball.

Martina was all over the place in this match. So many errors. It seemed like she had no concentration at all
