i tried watching the movie with the original characters, but i couldn't do it. it's not as if they're bad, but their voices just didnt have as much effect as the Original London Cast.

Also, the Phantom movie lovers are so caught up on Erik's looks. they're missing the point. The Phantom of the Opera wasn't written so women could fall in love with Erik, but that there was so much more to him than his face. i'd say that yes, the phantom is ugly, but inside he's beautiful (minus the killing lol)

I agree 100%! It's my favorite part and he just ruined it! No offense, but I really never liked Michael Crawford. When I first heard the main theme sung by Crawford and Brightman, I couldn't help but laugh at his voice when he sang "The Phantom of the opera is there, inside your mind". I'm sorry, but it just sounded weird. Butler has a deeper voice like I would imagine the phantom.

I'd appreciate both of them for I guess Michael and Gerard have different impression of the Phantom and so they improvised him differently in action and in singing. When they sing the same line differently it shows what they have different interpretation of what the Phantom is thinking by saying that line. Every Phantom has their own interpretations of the role, and they can all be as awsome as long as the interpretations are not far from the Phantom's personality.

I got to see Michael on stage in N.Y. and L.A. and watched the film once and Michael Crawford was beyond amazing. I agree with the poster who said it's as if the character of Erik had hand picked MC himself. Schumacher and ALW are both jerks. ALW should never have promised Michael, in print, the role in the movie if he didn't mean it. Then the fans wouldn't have been upset. Shows you can't trust ALWs word

This is who they should've used in the film years ago. If ALW had listened to the millions of fans around the world who wanted to see MC and SB in the film, we wouldn't have needed to wait 18 years for a film which, to be fair, was disappointing.
