  • @quantumdude I have been to Vietnam 7 times, I love the food, I love the nonstop music, i love the country and i love the people, Vietnamese people are so polite, lovely, friendly and fun to be with, they make me happy. The only exotic diseases there, are when foreigners like YOU enter the country and bring them. SO SCUM stay out of Vietnam.

  • this is really really good explanation, but it would give me a stroke learning all those words if i wasn't a Viet. lol, too much to remember right ?

  • Vietnamese is too complicated to learn

Its not just "you and I" like English

  • tao là người Việt Nam :D

  • how do put those accent marks wen u type on here??

  • @Basilisk1989 We have Vietnamese keyboard program called Unikey for that job, the combination of vowels and numbers will give you the mark like this: a+1=á a+2=à a+3=ả a+4=ã a+5=ạ o+6=ô u+7=ư a+8=ă d+9=đ it seem complicated, but actually, it can be handle after few minutes.
  • @VietnamEyesTalk : In the VietNam, people always use type of writing is Telex. There are:

    a+s=á, a+f=à , a+x=ã, a+j=ạ, a+r=ả, a+a=â, a+w=ă, o+w=ơ, d+d=đ

  • @quyetngthanh not "people always". I don't like the Telex type myself. I used the VNI one

  • @lounguyen5258 Yes. But generality people use Telex typing.

  • @quyetngthanh okay, if you say so :D most of my friends are using VNI

  • @lounguyen5258 Oh sorry! Where are you from?

  • @lounguyen5258 do u mean north or south ? then I'm from Hồ Chí Minh city :D

  • @kb101bk Oh but I do! I know it's all about the accents, and how to say it, The tones, I believe Vietnamese has like 5 tones, like Chinese, or I think maybe Chinese have 4 and it's Thai that has 5? I'm not sure, but I really want to know. haha

  • yeahh,,, that was kinda just the southern way to say those...

do you know vietnamese is the only language in asia based on alphabet?

do you know vietnamese has 3 accent? (North Accent, Central Accent and South Accent)... do you know Central Accent is the hardest Vietnamese to listen, to speak and to understand?

  • @blueealge332 yes, yes i do.

  • @blueealge332 : its not only 3 accents, there's a lot more, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai people's accent is far from the southern accent, and not somewhere near the central people's accent

  • @purpleHCC im talkin about main accent.... lol

  • ít only a piece of cake @@

  • ALL U CAN SAY IS CHING CHANG CHONG O_O

    younger brother=em trai

    elder brother=anh trai

    father=bố

    mother=mẹ

  • i say some language VietNam: Chào mọi người, tên tôi là Phạm Tân Tân, tôi thích nhửng người đang học tiếng việt ~ hello everbody, my name Pham Tan Tan i like people learning language VietNam !

    Do you like that !

  • these are the basics, there are MUCH more

  • 0:3 Uhm...At least in your Southern accent, the VNese don't pronounce Bác like /bahk/, no /k/ here. About the Northerner, I'm pretty sure they don't, either.

  • press 7 repeatedly xD conconcocnocnocnc

  • how about TAO and MÀY? lolz ^^ just kiddin'.... and where's DÌ, MỢ, DƯỢNG? omg it's a lot and quite more complicated if a foreigner wants to master this!

  • My dad was born in Hanoi 1935 and was kidnapped at age 8 brought to Laos and he ran away to south to Saigon and he speaks the northern dialect which dad is pronounced Bo

  • @johnnyboygeek99 : Bọ is also "bug", words from different provinces sometimes confuse even Vietnamese ourselves :D

  • complicated

  • i am only watching this video, because she is soooooooo pretty. Em dep va.

  • @lazyhorse22 : em dep qua

  • @uyenst

    thank you, cam on ban.

  • Donna, you should apply for CNN !!!!

  • This is polite Southern dialect. The Northern dialect is slightly different. And there are more ways to address yourself depend on your age, gender, relationship...with the listener.

  • I think there is like a billion way you can label a person in vietnamese.

  • arain091503: actually is Chào(hello), I think it sounds like Ciao (hello in Italian).

  • I think you're not really good at pronoucing Vietnamese, some words are a little bit not actually is, but however, your lesson helps alot for the foreigner to study our languange.

  • @zunydep : I think she didn't grow up in Vietnam. It's good that she is surrounded by English-speakers and still can speak Vietnamese

  • em dep qua ;D

  • is that chau(hello) came from french tchao(hello)?

  • @arian091503 :I don't think so. Greetings should be the first words of a language, and we didn't really communicate with the french til their invasion in 19th century

    P/s: I thought French use bonjour :-?

  • This is Vietnamese with a slight American accent. To speak more naturally, "Em" is pronounced short with a high level first tone. There shouldn't be any stress at the "e" sound which makes it sound like /aaam/.

"Con" is pronounced like /kon/ not /ko:ng/ with less aspiration on consonant "c".

  • i can't learn any viet ur too beautiful! :(

  • @1EnPiNk you should be able to judge people's age. However, if you are not so sure and want to be polite, you can choose to lower "identification" or "title." like the following:

For people that are about your parents' age, call them "bác" (assuming they are older than your parents)

For people that seem older than "bác" => ông (for male) and bà (for female)

For people about your age, anh (for male), chị (for female)...assuming they are older than you.

    I hope this help.

  • Ella es bonita_Spanish

    She is pretty_English

    ..............??_Vietnamese

  • @pappysmp

it depend on your relationship to that girl or how old she is.

A young woman (could be younger or older) that you don't know or not have a close relationship with (essentially somone on TV).

    Cô ấy rất đẹp

Someone who is a little older that you know or want to be personable with ( aka friend or idol)

    Chị ấy rất đẹp

    Someone a bit older ( a least a generation)

Bác ấy rất đẹp or bà ấy rất đẹp (bác is for people that you're more close with)

  • @pappysmp x ấy rất đẹp.

    Replace x with:

"bà", "bác" if your subject is significantly older than you older than your parents.

"cô" if your subject is kind of your parents' age

"chị", "nàng", "cô", "em", "bạn", "cô bé", "nhỏ" are some words for subjects about your age.

    Age ranking:

    bà > bác >cô > chị > nàng = bạn > em > nhỏ > cô bé

*Note that this follows general standard Vietnamese, which can have some more addition, and in reality, people don't necessary to follow exactly 100%.

  • So if I want to say "I like you" and/or "I love you" to a person around my age its:

    tôi thích bạn

    Tôi yêu bạn

how does the last lesson (lesson 8) apply to what we learn in this lesson?

  • @Lite619 Lesson 8 was perfect for a romantic setting, however, if you want to tell a friend of yours that you love him/her then "tôi thích bạn," and "tôi yêu bạn" would work fine. Also, these terms are very generic; they can be used to both people older and younger than you (but not significantly), to both male or female, and to anyone you consider to be your colleague or peer.

    I hope this clarifies things.

  • Donna, love you already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • some reason this girl look so familiar!!? I think shes a black belt

  • how do you say sports in vietnamese

  • @MsBabyprincess1999 thể thao

  • Believe me not only the American will be confused off of this... I speak and write pretty darn good in Vietnamese. I'm still freaking confused. WTF?

  • @quysweat

I speak and write in Vietnamese, and I'm not confused. This is all correct. The only word I don't use is cha/u. Maybe it's the Southern dialect, and it's different from what you normally say and write? The Northern Vietnamese dialect confuses the hell out of me.. so I wouldn't know if that's it.

  • Thanks! this helped alot.

  • thanks for the quick lesson. it was very helpful ^^

  • Hi, I'm just leaning vietnamese and I was wondering is this how you would address yourself and others like in English when we say "me" and "you". I don't really understand. Can you please post some senarios showing how we are supposed to use these words?

  • @TxSwEeTiE Its is like saying your name in front when you address some1. For instance "I want a drink please" speaking to a friend "Thoy muon nouc lam on" to a person like a 13 year old to a 20 year old "Em muon nouc lam on" and to an elder like parents or grandparents "Con muon nouc lam on" Hope this helps if not send a message and ill reply and video or something to further explain

  • @TxSwEeTiE in english, the first person is I, second person is you, third person is he,she, it. but in vietnamese it is more complicate than that, it depends on the gender, old, relationship, and North, Centre and the South Vietnam.

    - the first person - I

. if you are roughly same age with second person, then address yourself as: tôi (formal way), tao (informal, used when you know the second person very well like friend), tớ (used in the north vietnam) mình (used in the south, very friendly)

  • is this north vietnamese?? doesnt sound like what i say at all lool :P

  • american is gunna fall off the chair watching this =))

    yup, confusing :D

  • Perfection:)

  • Thanks so much! This is so helpful!! You answered a question I have had for a long time!!

  • wtf

  • when your a guy greeting a girls parents. Should i bow and say chau co and chau chi? if i bow should i say it before or after i bow? or during the bow? or should i just wave hello to them and say it?

  • @vietbombaclut i dont think you have to like really bow. just need to slightly bow or nod you head and say it at the same time.

  • she has nice hair

  • Wow u r really beautiful!!

  • i dont know if you tried to say vietnamese in english accent or not, maybe it's easier to make people learn quicker, but sometimes wrong in the beginning is not good ^^, next time try to say it in the correct vietnamses accent

  • you have a slight Eng accent ^_^ But I love your vids!!

  • im definitely gonna recommend this to a lot of vietnamese youth who cant speak vietnamese.. its such a shame.. nice with the structured tutorials

  • do people actually use ban? Like friend? I always thought you said 'con' to your parents and not to other older folk? Can Chau be said differently? or a different word tha means the same? I used toi with some my hairdresser (hahaha) and she was sort of offended by it. I then used anh... what did I do wrong?

  • Or you can just call anyone by "YOU", like "YOU mua cho ME cái bánh" They will understand, trust me.

  • More please!!!

  • meh i already know viet, i wanna learn japanese!!!

  • Slightly Younger than parents (Male) - chú

  • I'm not sure if this was addressed in any of the other videos, so sorry if it is, but does Vietnamese have tones? like does the way you say it affect the meaning of the words? like Chinese I know they use tones in the words and the pinyin words have accents to indicate how the word is pronounced.

  • @TOASTERshavings Yes, Vietnamese has 6 different tones

    a normal

    á high

    à low

ả ã and ạ these you have to listen to Vietnamese to know lol

  • Don't u also address yourself as Chau went you speak to some1 around your parents age? That is how I address myself in the northern way. And I usually adress myself as Mi`nh when i speak to some 1 at my age...I only use TOI when i dont like to talk to that person.

  • Comment removed

  • @linh48964 yes, "cháu" can be used to address yourself when talking with people around your parents' age.

"mình" is fine too...note: "mình" can mean "we", or "our" (as in làng mình = our village). Lastly, using "tôi" doesn't not imply that you don't like to talk to the other person, but rather shows formal setting.

  • please shoot it inside...

  • I'm gonna go ahead and ask a question which I've already asked before...

In your early videos, you used a Blue or Greenscreen and Chroma Keying (ie, you removed the background and placed your image over scenery shots)... but in later videos you've made it much simpler, just standing next to a a whiteboard...

Is this because it was too hard to use the blue/green screen or did you change production companies etc ???

  • @SAPPOROGAIJIN Hi! Just sent you a private message!

  • i never knew about the ending part on how to address yourself! all i ever say is con.

  • Tôi mới về nước ở Mỹ và thấy phúc rằng học được tiéng Việt bằng YouTube, cảm ơn rất nhiều!

  • Yay Your back thanks for the vids, Your awesome!

  • @mikeyjaynes92 Yay! Thanks for following the videos!

  • @learnvietnamese I think I saw you in my dreams once. It was the most wonderful dream I've ever had in my life :)

  • if u want to pick up girls ur age, u say "chao nguoi dep" ~ Hello beautiful

and then u go in for the kill "em muon di an khong" ~ wanna go eat?

  • @mercilessgladiator

it's di an com. an khong would mean "..eat no?"

  • @jesssicaa816

    whatever..show off -.-

  • @mercilessgladiator

I wasn't showing off.. I was actually trying to help. And make sure people don't go asking girls if they want to "go eat no," and embarrass themselves.. ;p

  • @mercilessgladiator : Haha quá đúng :) very exactly

  • @mercilessgladiator the first sentence was a very good tip =) but I don't think just taking a Vietnamese girl to eat would steal her heart. However, it is a good start =))

  • @ThangHuynh10 thats why you would take her to grab some bubble tea w/ boba afterward to seal the deal

  • @mercilessgladiator i believe you meant "bò bía"

  • @khoihq wtf is "bo bia" - if u are referring to black tapioca jelly balls, then yes.

  • these videos are really great and helpful for absolute beginners, but I'd like to go in-depth soon. any recommendations for books, audio cds that are best for learning the language?

  • Hello ! Thanks for the video ! btw, is this southern accent or northern accent?

  • @loki2504 It's southern, northern is ..well it's alot more different..

  • @mikeyjaynes92 :) what is the difference?

  • @minhtrangnguyen94 I think it's spoken with more of a Chinese accent.A long with that they use different words.

  • @mikeyjaynes92 I think that's the same. maybe u think it's spoken with more of a chinese accent because she is not Vietnamese ( or can be an oversea Vietnamese). She uses words that we use in North Vietnam

  • @mikeyjaynes92 Oh well either the accent is different. and From I hear from both of my friends that are North and South they say that North speaks faster and has a thicker accent.

  • my parents really wanna talk to you <3

  • that's a lot to remember lol but practice makes perfect ^^

    & welcome back!

  • you're so pretty :)

  • good to see you again donna.hope you make many more videos.
