The Crystalyte motor was sourced from a vendor selling these fine Chinese made motors. If I were to do it over again I would purchase the high torque only version (not the dual mode version). It would thus save weight. I almost always used it in high torque mode for the quickest acceleration. Likewise, the battery can be sourced from many sellers on Ebay. I recommend 48V, 15Ah. The 72V I had on this bike produced a top speed I rarely used. 15-20Ah will give a longer range.

  • Where can one find specs & buy parts?

  • er can you build me one? I (judging for the video) can pick it up ^_^

  • ..... He walked away uninjured, because a recumbent is feet first instead of head first. My neighbor, in contrast, broke his back trying to maneuver his Harley at 5 mph. People die in cars and motorcycles every day. Choose your poison....

FYI, if you go slow and stay on the curb, more drivers will pass you and try to run you off the road. Take a lane and ride near the speed limit...... They will pass you less and in a safer manor. This is what almost all the recumbent riders know.

  • I think this video is great!

I have a rotator pursuit recumbent (no assist) and I routinely get up to 40 mph on level ground, because I can create over 1,000 watts for several minutes. Downhill I have reached 62mph. Motorcycle are much more dangerous than this guys bike. They weigh hundreds of pounds and you are likely to go head first in an accident. I have laid my bike down at nearly 40mph with a few scratches. In a race, I saw another recumbent hit a tree at nearly the same speed. He

  • Nrg, very cool! Nothing wrong with pushing the state of the art. I commute about 50 miles a week in the summer, and I have been temped to put an electic wheel on my SWB 'bent and maybe riding twice as far, but if I work out the cost and the numbers, its not a break-even proposition. Presently I put the bike in the back of my saturn, drive half way to work, and cycle the other half. The best of both worlds, pushes my effective mpg up to 60 in the saturn for the commute.

  • MrHobiecat

You are correct on all accounts. I was riding it on a private road and I sold it so that I wouldn't be tempted to drive it fast on the street. Before I sold it, I removed the 72V, 10Ah battery and replaced it with a 48V, 16Ah LiFePO4 battery. It's now used be an older fellow, who rides and enjoys it on the California bike paths.

Incidentally, I also pedal a Hobie mirage drive tandem kayak (top speed about 6.5 kts with sail).

  • 42mph without pedaling, what you got there is an elecrtic motorcycle, illegal in all 50 states, and very dangerous too boot. Electric assist on a bike is ONLY suppose to engage while you are pedaling, and your top speed is way above the legal limit. go ahead and tell me what a prick I am, but when you end up dead you are going to make things more difficult for the thousands of other people riding electric assist bikes the way they are intended to be used.

  • @MrHobiecat Yes, officer!

  • @MrHobiecat you've never done anything wrong ... ever? Exceed the speed limit in your vehicle? Drink and drive? Blow a stop sign? You're that perfect that you can scold another like this? So he's 22 mph over the legal limit. Again, you've NEVER done this yourself in any vehicle? Hypocrite ..... look it up .... it's what you are.

  • @MrApachejunction Read all the comments before you go off the deep end. Then come back, your apology will be graded on sincerity and spelling.

nrgxpert has already said he NEVER used this overpowered bike on the streets or on bike paths.

An electric bicycle that can go 42 mph is ILLEGAL. Its not just illegal to ride it over 42mph, its ILLEGAL to ride it at any speed.

I dont make the laws, I just suffer along with everyone else when other people screw things up for the rest of us.

  • @MrHobiecat the last thing I would do is apologize to a narrow minded turd such as yourself. You didn't mention how clean your yard was either. Never in your life have YOU broken any LAW? Really? This man is a pioneer IMHO ... a great one at that. The allowed 20 mph (read the actual law jerk) for pedal assist is meant to suppress those wanting to go around petrol, period. So you sit back, obey the LAW like a good little boy and let the rest of us get busy moving this tech forward.

  • @MrApachejunction Oh I didnt realize you were a hero!

If you make two wheel vehicle that can go 42 mph you got yourself a MOTORCYCLE (which is what I said in my first post). A MOTORCYCLE is a MOTORCYCLE no matter what you use for fuel or power.

ALL the applicable laws for a MOTORCYCLE now apply to your vehicle. It is no longer a bicycle, or an electic assist bicycle, or a scooter or a moped.

Your personal emotions about oil companies have nothing to do with it.

  • @MrHobiecat No sure how you got hero outta my post but whatever. I'll take your silence about never breaking the law as guilt. And yes, the 20 mph limit set on pedal assist is the same as any NEV (Gem car for instance) limited to 25 mph. Can they safely go faster? Sure. Big oil want you giving your transport bucks to the power companies? No. The limits are there to keep us slaves to the pump. You state emotions when in truth, these are the facts. Time for you to crawl back under that rock.

  • @MrApachejunction whether Im a saint or a serial killer, a motorcycle is still a motorcycle, and your logic and reasoning skills are underwhelming.

NEV are not DESIGNED to mix it up with traffic. They do not have crumple zones, air bags, or any other other features that CARS have. GM has made electric cars (the EV1). Nissan has one coming out now, the Leaf, and no oil companies are having Nissan dealers assassinated.

Go back and read NRG's responses to my post, you dont speak for him.

  • @MrHobiecat My logic and reasoning underwhelming? Standard pedal bicycles "mix it up with traffic" every day as do motorcycles. They have no crumple zones ... air bags etc. You can do better than that HC. As for the EV1, please rent "Who killed the electric car" to help shed some light. The Leaf ends up costing aprox 25k after incentives. At that cost, most Americans will stick with their gas burners. You must get in a long line to buy one. Not speaking for NRG. Assassination?

  • @MrApachejunction yeah, bicycles mix it up going an average of 12mph on the right side of the lane, not going over 40mph IN the traffic lanes.

Motorcycles are designed to ride in traffic, they have the tires, brakes, ruggedness, lights, signals, horn, mirrors, and if you are smart crash bars and leather pants.

I dont know who you think you are defending here, the vidoe author said HE NEVER RODE IT ON PUBLIC STREETS - IT WAS AN EXPERIMENT, and I told him thats VERY COOL!

    LIGHTEN UP!

  • You get some harbor freight panels 45 watt $150 with coupon and you would have a green bike. use the panels over head provide shade for you while you ride probably less drag too. If you do this please do a video with your new mod. It is worth it even if you recharge only when stopped that way you get to work charge by sun get home you plug in. Might be worth it to have 2 battery pak one to charging while using the other alternate charging and using? Great bike be careful that is wicked fast.

Please do more videos about your electric bike

  • Drive assist for a recumbent? I don't need to remind you that the very force keeping you upright is quite different than a standard two-wheeler. Test or not...you might have had a 42 mph road rash and broken legs.

  • @Archangel72467 Huh?..... FYI your elbow is the joint between your forearm and bicep and your ass is where you're currently talking from.

  • Perhaps this is the future?

  • What gauge did you have on the broken spoke? I'm looking at the 405 to add to my recumbent, but I was opting for the front wheel to balance out the batteries in the rear. Why did you add it to the rear wheel? I'm also going for the lithium phosphate, but was thinking of staying at 36v to keep the cost down, and plus I'm too scared to ride at 42mph ;-)

  • I replaced the Chinese made spokes on the original wheel with new spokes, supposedly not made in China (possibly American or Swiss). I don't know the gauge, but could check the diameter with a micrometer. It is most likely 14 gauge, but I can confirm. My front wheel is 20" diameter and I wanted speed, not acceleration. It turned out it went too fast on 72V and a 26" wheel. I now use 48V of LiFePO4 cells.

  • Wow gotta love that. I will keep this in mind when I electrify my trike. Thanks for posting this!

  • now, how is it going -uphill- ?

  • The video shows the bike going 42 mph on a level street parallel to the ocean. The bike goes uphill very well. I climbed a 950 foot hill in Palos Verdes, California to an alternative energy festival about as fast as a friend made it driving his Prius. He was very surprised to see me enter at the same time as himself. The downside is that if you let this monster motor provide most of the torque then you're going to break spokes (I broke a spoke later that day going up another hill).

  • We only need 36v to reach those speeds

  • To njander:

Actually, the video has a slide that answers your question. It's a 72 volt lithium ion polymer battery. More specifically, it's lithium manganese oxide chemistry. I have since changed to lithium iron phosphate, which, although it has lower energy density, it has higher power, longer life and is safer.

  • How many volts are you running? What kind of battery?

  • I almost wish i bought the 405...

  • The 405 by Crystalyte is a high speed, low torque model. Don't try any hills with it!

  • ya. thanks. but thats what I wanted it for, it exists for some one.

  • ... i forgot to ask - is your recumbent faster than a standard bike ?

  • ... that is funny ...

  • hi nxt ! thanks for the input - in this video you are pedalling and running the electric motor at the same time ? i ran into a guy walking from conneticut to taos nm with a 3 wheeled joggers baby carriage - he had fitted it out with a 30 gal sterilite case to put a tent in & carry food & water - i would have joined him & his dog ( cheaper to travel with & alot fewer problems than a woman ) ( smile ) - i would have made modifications to a motorized trike - do you think that is possible ? ...

  • I was pedaling and using the motor at the same time. I have since discovered that at my top speed, the pedals aren't doing anything but slowing me down, due to making me weave back and forth a little. I've gone a couple miles per hour faster without pedaling. However, I definitely have a stealthy quiet electric bike and want those young cyclists I pass to think I'm Lance Armstrong's grandpa. For that reason I pedal furiously as I pass them at double their speed!

  • many thanks for the input - is there any advantage to a recumbent "trike" ?...

  • A trike is more stable if you're worried about balancing a low recumbent on tight corners. Some of the low ones are very aerodynamic, but that also makes them harder to see in traffic. They also weigh a lot, which makes a difference on hills. I believe a two-wheeled recumbent is the best compromise of weight, aerodynamics and visibility in traffic... but then, I've never owned a trike.

  • hi nrg ! i've got a standard bike with an 85 cc 2 stroke - it hits 45 mph easily - do you think i could re-mount this engine somehow on a recumbent ? thankx .....

  • The short answer is yes, if it's the type that fits over the rear wheel with a friction roller. I've seen others that mount within the upright bicycle's diamond frame and then use a chain drive to the rear wheel. You'd have to modify the mounting hardware to also fit above the rear wheel and chain drive it on the left side of the wheel to a large gear.

I used to use a two stroke gas engine to power a Turner recumbent, but the smell and sound made me go electric. Good luck!
