I guess that's why Popeye appeared in some of the oddest commercials in recent years. King Features somehow had little, to no respect for Popeye. Yet, they played hardball with Warner Bros. on getting the classic cartoons on DVD.

Your remark ("King Features gave me the impression they really didn't care too much") is of no surprise to Popeye fans.

This is why we see the ol salt as a rapper,

gangster, gambler on any number of shirts. It's also way he's been in a popularity-coma in the US for the past decade. King needed to have their arm twisted to work with Warner Home Video to release the Fleischers on DVD.

Yep, truly a shame when rights owners have no respect/admiration for their characters and are only after a quick buck. I grew up watching the Paramount Popeyes on TV and later became a big fan of the Fleischer cartoons, especially the ones that utilized the 3D turntable technique (had a Super 8 print of Popeye meets Sinbad I almost wore out).
