Went to see Phil on the No Jacket Required tour at the NEC in Birmingham - Happy memories of 15,000 people all singing along still give give me goose bumps
def the best version, i thought i saw this vi with millions of veiws . maybe it as taken down then put back up? idk either way its fantastic and i wanna put my own cover up, i can hit most all the notes. If anyone would care to see it ill do it, idk it really fits my life. i feel it
I really don't know if Phil will read this but i'm trying anyway. Even If you can't play aymore of an instrument. IOf you com in Quebec city for the summer fesrtival we will cure you for one night only and you will remember us for ever........
Love Chester throwin' it down on the old school electronic pads! This is still one of the cleanest, best sounding live versions out there. I guess it would have to be around 1985/86.
@sunshine13BABY On his Unplugged special, I believe that he said it was about a guy in a mental institution, sort of based on "One flew over the cu-cu's nest."
This whole show is just the peak of performance. I truely prefer minimalist perspective. What collins does best is bring the human element out in variations, like rues from a palet, derived from a drum machine recording and some basic phrasing that is a basic robotic metronomic beginning. Listen to the "demos" and further compare the the album release of this song and this performance. It is Phil Collins' niche, aside from his awsomeness on the acoustic kit. Most artists just cannot compare.
I have lived my entire life with a pain that is numbing. We all do. There are not many of us that are deeply in touch with our souls so as to feel life ...I mean FEEL life !!
This song speaks to the very core , the foundation of a robotic world system that takes away our humanity. Phil knows who they are. We all know who they are. And when you hear this song you will be reduced to tears as you will know what you feel is your stolen soul. Someday we'll remember. Then we'll be home !!
@alansantosmg Eu assisti esse show quando eu tinha 15 anos, lembra?Foi na manchete se eu não me engano... Eu tinha o LP "No Jacket Required".
@willietx Collins started as a drummer because of 2 reasons. First, he's an amazing drummer. Second, while his voice is incredible, Peter Gabriel is a lyrical and musical genius. Before their stint into pop music in the 80's they were the quintessential prog rock band
@LaydenRobinson Sincerest thanks for your kind reply. This song brings much joy, and comfort...We had front row seats several yrs ago,on Feb 7, my husband's birthday.. at Phil's "last concert tour". This was his "final" song....little did I know ..........
Yes, I say it again: He is king of pop. He is also great rockman. He is great artist but like he sing "ordinary man" with "ordinary life". He is simply the best.
I went to a lot of concerts...by far he is the BEST!!! Best concert I ever went to. Nice and quiet going into concert and coming out, wan't noisy and "chaos" as such. He sounds great no "Tweeking" his talent, if you get my meaning. :)
No fakes here, this is genuine magical musical experience. special thanks for this wonderful music by this awesome man. thank you, Phil. you've given us wonderful music for our ears to hear.
oh im glad im not alone! this song describes my life in unlimited ways! it really speaks to me due to my childhood being so tragic and i always wanted something to soothe my spirit on that subject. this song matches me to a whole of which only those with a heart could really truly understand. this song actually brings me to tears every time i hear it. such magic coming from it, its like heaven in the form of music. a true masterpiece done by a man with a true purpose and an awesome singing voice
this song is supposed to be about a mental institution patient...this song would calm a mentally unstable person in a good second. Phil is so inspirational, he would have the whole asylum swaying lighters to his music. he would give them a musical experience to remember for the rest of their lives and it would also give them hope.
Amen. I was in attendance that night in Dallas on the 3rd row center stage 25 years ago and it was an unbelievable night. Great artist who put on a hell of a show.
You are very lucky & fortunate to have witnessed this magic in person. me personally, i would have loved to have sung this with him. that is, in fact, one of my dreams is to sing this song with him one day if its possible. i would feel like im in heaven if i ever got to sing this with him.
Two sold out shows in Reunion Arena. There were 30,000 or more singing the song with him that night. Good thing it was loud enough no one heard me. Heehee. Thanks and have a great day.
When this came out I had just graduated from college in the past fall in a major my parents totally disapproved in. I changed it half way through without telling them I left my state to get away from the controlling I felt at home.
In some ways I still am looking for that "home". I think we all carry scars from our childhood ( Also Goo Goo Dolls Name) but when I just feel trapped I get in my 68 mustang convertible and blare this song and just drive.
I remember getting goosebumps to alot of Collins tunes back in the day. His music still holds up, big time. He's all sincerity, and judging from interviews, seems like one of the all-around nice guys in the music biz
Actually, Peter Gabriel does background vox on the original version. But, you good people already knew that.
Bonecrusher, I don't think this is on DVD. But it should be. Seems like all the mediocre stuff with every band is reissued on DVD, but the good stuff is left languishing on fan's VHS tapes. Bummer.
Hopefully PC will start on his collection after they finish with the Genesis live box. That should be out soon. :)

I remember coming home from preschool and having my mom play this song, and I still listen this song today.
