People werent that PC back then they called it how it was, musical genres like the ones I listened to above mostly are peformed by black people and geared to black tastes so to speak.
Just like rock, country, adult contemporary, metal, etc. are geared to a white audience.
@hailiejade1987 Back then, there were actual "black" radio stations. Since Face Value has horns from Earth Wind and Fire, it ws considered R&B or "black", even though Phil is white. He was trying to break the color barrier by having "black" radio stations play his music.
This is part of Genesis History, and the truth came out, at 13:40 when Ray asks have you ran into Peter Gabriel or Steve Hackett and Phil says I ran into Peter and I ran over Steve, Ha! That's the whole truth, very good interview, thanks for posting it !
I believe Phil is talking badly about Steve Hackett, it is quite obvious I think, that they definetly had deep problems and that has to do with Steve's departure from the band, and the fact that Genesis changed for a simple commercial cheap way thanks to Phil's hunger for fame, affected deeply the relation between Phil and Steve ... IMHO..
@trevizons lol no it wasn't phil's hunger for fame. Phil's style of writing was a lot different, more straight forward and classic. If phil tried to copy Peters' way of writing it would have come off as fake. he had to write in his style and thats what he did and his style is much more commercial.
(Talking about FV, 3mins in) "Not r-n-r simple but it's simple, it's like got space, more mature." dj replies, 'like turn it on again'?. ..'well the tunes on Duke, we felt, the best were the tunes we co-wrote together.' ...Then he says Duke could've been a double. 'Cause there's an awful lot of material.'
From Duke sessions: Evidence of Autumn ,Open Door, Vancouver. - As far as finished songs that came out later that's all I know about. That's 3 sides, but what's left to make up a 4th side?
Around 10:20 it got interesting to me, where he gets into talking about B-sides and rehearsals and 'blowin''... 'some of those cassettes are very good quality... I take great pride over my cassette recordings', and after that his relationship/'relationship' with Peter and Steve...
According to what's said at the beg., I guess WLIR was/is a NY station.

Irony: PC keeps talking about having so much material that the next album might need to be a double album, and they end up releasing Abacab, which was maybe the shortest Genesis album ever.
Look man, you made a dumb statement by saying Queen / F. Mercury can't hold a candle to Earth, Wind & Fire / M. White / P. Bailey. EWF are very skilled artists, very diverse & have exercised great musicianship. There's nothing wrong w/ your precious Queen, dude. It's just that there's other great stuff out there. All you had to say was, "I'm not a fan of Earth, Wind & Fire. Or, just don't mention them at all. If you can't handle responses to your comments, cease commenting on videos.
And you made a "dumb statement" by saying that I'm "out of my mind." I personally believe that Queen is superior musically and vocally. It was unnecessary for you to disagree with my opinion with an insult. Enjoy your "precious" E,W&F, skippy.
Saying one band or person is supierior to another isn't real an opinion, it's a belief. And beliefs can be wrong and in this case, as a well studied musician with 21 years of experience, I'd have to say your wrong, here. EW&F is easily on par with Queen. You may not be tuned in to the elements of what EW&F had that Queen couldn't touch. And I know that the reverse is also true. I'm a big Queen fan. You just can't compare walruses and lawnmowers and say which is "superior".
By the way, I wrote a little quickly. I meant you put down Earth, Wind & Fire as a band by saying they couldn't hold a candle to Queen. But, I think you know what I was saying. You're probably the kind of individual that would make a "case" out of little mistake though. So, I'm clarifying.

...I wish I hadn't heard this interview. I bought the album when it was first released, and I bought it......and it was not because of it's 'blackness' phil. And for your information....black is about a black performaance...and you are not. So just play it and shut up with your racial stereotyping..
I can see how this can be misunderstood, but his message here was about breaking down the walls of stupid stereotypes. Stations with mostly white listeners said 'Face Value' sounded too black, and because he was a white British artist, black programmers were also afraid to take a chance with its audience. Attitudes like that still hadn't changed much by 1981. I was drawn to Phil because of his outspoken influence from music of ALL kinds....the way it should be for every artist.
Yes, I can't believe you said that about Peter. Ironically, peter still makes brilliant music and works with people all over....and Phil, you have written about 3 good songs.....enough said.
This interview is awesome. I've been a fan of Collins since I heard another day in paradise on vh1 back in 1993. thanx, dude! You kick ass and so do Phil Collins!

Great Interview. He isnt so candid these days. Interesting to hear of the Steve Hackett rift. I interviewed Steve at our local theatre and he was keen on a Genesis reunion and full of nothing but good words for the band members
I'm not an expert, but I heard that Steve Hackett left the band because one of the songs he wrote, I believe it was "Please Don't Touch", got rejected by Tony, Mike and Phil. I think that's when the band was starting to go towards "pop", so Steve felt like he didn't fit in anymore and left.
In fact, Steve felt a growing feeling of frustration within the band after he made Voyage of the Acolyte, his first solo album. Having been the captain of his own ship, he came back in Genesis and started to push his ideas but Genesis being a democracy did not worked that way (his suggestion to have other musicians play on Genesis records was voted down and, yes, Please Don't Touch was rejected by the band). He finally realized he was not part of a band anymore and needed to go solo.
