That's the real pain-in-the-ass thing about Confuse in FF7. If you give them a command and they get confused before carrying out, they'll always follow the command... on the wrong party.

Ahaha, that battle made my day. One thing I noticed, though, that on both times doing it (I died at the boss), I was able to go passed the number and still turn back and confirm it. So I believe as long as you scroll to the right number and O button to confirm, it should work. The right-left-right-right just happen to be the quickest directions to reach each number.
