Do it the opposite way.

Point the straightener up and twist it as you pull your hair through it.

It should work the same.

This is rubbish - GHDs are *not* used like tongs, and this curl is horrible! There are a lot of instructional videos on youtube that show how to use GHDs much more effectively, not to mention faster, to create a much nicer curl.

Not sure to be honest, but it doesn't matter they both achieve the heat necessary to get the curl. It's just like curling ribbon with scissors - there is a knack to it so practice is key!
