it is illegal to bow fish for anything else but carp in NY, there is also a season on bowfishing carp.
its not that hard, your release sucks, and more... you're just a lousy shot. maybe its the bow, martin bows are crap, shoot a hoyt, browning or pse for bowfishing, any anything except a martin for all other bow hunting.
I really prefer the night time with spot lights, but when using spot lights have your partner hold it high at as less of an angle as possible and try to get as close up on it as you can (during the day you have to much light refraction and you also get the occasional "omg you guys are so mean blah blah blah I know everything about anything" people, plus night is peaceful
What ever you do make sure you get a nice big one. :)
Its legal to shoot them for fun because they are not regulated fish, gar, carp and some others are very proficient therefore need to be harvested for population control. Im from Texas, I bowfish a lot, like daily! Same thing for wild hogs, there are just too many, so we can kill as many as we want, anytime,365, 24-7, and there are still hundreds of thousands of hogs...
We have 2 tourney's a year to clean the St Lawrence of the massive amounts of carp there are. We fill a large garbage container full in the spring and in the fall if we didn't do that the St Lawrence would be over run by carp.
Thats a nice setup we use a ten foot jon boat and an electric trolling motar and power our spotlights with car batteries... Its crude but it works we shoot on dryden lake any one else?
What are you guys doing with these fish? If this is killing for pleasure, you have no right to call it a sport. Im an avid carp fisherman but I practice catch and release. This should only be legal if you are eating the fish.
I am a carp fisher aswell and I practice catch and release, but when I bowfish for them I use em for fertilizer and such, I only bow fish them when they are causing a problem and when the people let them over populate, I just like to give all fish a fighting chance.
When we shoot this show we had been out for about 23 hours total on the water (we broke for about 4 hours during the day to nap) But yes it is great fun during the daylight hours as well!!! The really cool part about the night shooting is how clearly you can see the fish.
I do like hunting and fishing, ain't a tree hugger. Still can't see the fun in shooting those lame asian carp fish, which taste disgusting... Anyways - enjoy!
Sure you can. Carp are a pain to clean due to their bone structure, but perfectly edible. Gar are tastier IMHO, but no easier to clean due to their armored hide.
I saw a video on here on gar fishing which to me the guys caught a musky not a gar. A gar is long and slender and has a long needle like mouth with teeth just like an alligator. They a are in these parts of Canada but I have seen a a few in our river out here, they are a very scary looking fish
Talk about Fun on the water!! I'll have to say, and I think Nathan would agree, this has to be one of my favorite ways to fish! If you want to have a great time, give Jeff and Melissa Bordwell from Legends of Fall Outfitters a call and do a little bow fishin' ! We were on the water for 26 hours and shooting for most of the time.
