Not what I would prefer to do with that much wind, but who knows how many times he's done it and how well he knows his plane. I'm not going to question his judgment or skills. Looks like he was taking off downhill/downstream. Taking off into the wind into rising terrain might have put him into sinkers coming off of terrain upwind of the airstrip making a turnaround questionable. There's a big drop off of the departure end, so even if he hit a sinker, he had room to manuever and descend.
I wasn't there, but I don't see any reason why he could not have taken off INTO the wind. Its probably better you didn't go with him, that's the type of pilot that gets people killed. That wind is way too strong to be doing a downwind takeoff in a 206 on a relatively short runway.

sometimes there is one way in and one way out....i thought it it looked real good to me...nice job of flying!!
