A masterpiece from the patron saint of pain. Townes, thanks for putting aside your own struggles to write this incredible music that helps ease the burden of ours.
For the family he left behind, to find and give voice to his poetic gift , through the wretchedness of being, so sorry he left you, but yes, sometimes there are things more important, his poetry... a people's balm... this man did not live another 4 years, but his words help so many get through our terror times.
I went to an Oxfam store last week and saw a Townes Van Zandt Live CD for only 2€. Didn't really know this genius, but I knew he's Caleb Followill's favourite singer, so I bought it. This song is so incredible and my favourite, and his music is priceless.
Thanks to YouTube, I just discovered TVZ less than 2 months ago (and his late friend Blaze Foley, as well). I've since purchased 4 TVZ CD's and 2 of Blaze's. I've watched virtually everything of Townes' posted here. I must thank you for posting the "Private Concert" videos. I feel Townes' singing those 13 songs reflects his most heartfelt performances, his emotional peak. While the bell clarity of his youthful voice had vanished, so to, had the rushed delivery.
@Vree0387 No, I think it's bowing down. Though it would make sense for townes to use such a term, bowing down fits with the song more and is what it says whenever i'll looked up the lyrics on various sites
Its a Takamine F340 SE , they call it a "lawsuite model" basically a D-18 copy right down to the headstock script. I've wondered many times about the string gage, it's a super loud guitar
Pure brilliance. If anyone doesn't understand the sheer genius of Townes' music, then that's someone that I don't want to spend more than five seconds talking about music with, to paraphrase Mickey Newbury.
can't thank you enough for sharing this treasure of footage and audio of townes van zandt and his beautiful music that he lived and shared with the world for us to relate...i'm glad he remembered that too!
@eyepanic "And now the dark air is like fire on my skin
And even the moonlight is blinding" - The name of the song is 'Rake', i uploaded it just a few weeks ago; search for 'Townes Van Zandt - Rake (Be Here to Love Me)'
@jhgf11 Thank you. Townes Van Zandt created songs that are so overwhelmingly wrenching I find I must take them in moderation. So much pain. God rest his soul.
@eyepanic "I don't think they're that sad, there are a few that aren't sad, they are hopeless... they are just the way it goes" (TWZ after being asked why he only wrote sad songs). Let me give you an advice, watch "Be Here to Love Me", it opens a window on the Van Zandt's world and helps you understanding him and his songs.
The Robert Plant/Alison Krauss cover lead me here and I admit to not knowing it was originally done by Townes Van Zandt. His music is so minimal, and exposed, but he builds it with such emotion and truthfulness I can't help but be amazed.
im not sure, but its the subtle nuances in a townes performance that make him great.each and every time there were small diffrences in sound or just the way his voice changed as he got older, somthing about each and every live performance that made it great.its an intangible that doesnt translate well in studio.i cherish every live version as a sacred jewel that can never be replaced.
I've never loved anyone so much... I adore Townes. My hero.

I think the metal finger picks have a lot to do with the tone. He's probably using 12's.

I think Townes loved others more than him self . So many are the same. Look
