Malcolm himself, however, was a good person and in the end his goodness shone through with the change in his beliefs. In a similar episode, a white man stopped him in the street, held out his hand and said "Malcolm X! Do you mind shaking hands with a white man?" and Maclolm replied "I don't mind shaking hands with a human being. Are you one?"

If you remember an earlier incident of his activities; a Black man was beaten by the police and left to die on the streets. He organized to have the man brought to the hospital. Is that racist? If you grew up how he did--the phrase "The White man is the devil" isn't unreasonable. Later in Malcolm X's life, he asks some older women in Harlem, "Has a White man ever been good to you?" and they respond "No" to their own surprise. Were they racist? No--they lived in a racist society.

Malcolm X's autobiography points to his differing opinions of EM while he was the spokesperson--for instance, he saw 'nice' White people all the time and said as much to them; but not in the capacity of spokesperson.

He was always forthcoming and strong in his opinions and manner of expression, but here he shows a willingness to deny his previous beliefs in light of the actions of a man he once idolized. @Jugularkill I agree, he was racist in his earlier teachings, but as he points out those were primarily the words of Elijah Muhammed. Malcolm himself, however, was a good person and in the end his goodness shone through with the change in his beliefs. In a similar episode, a white man stopped him in the street, held out his hand and said "Malcolm X! Do you mind shaking hands with a white man?" and Maclolm replied "I don't mind shaking hands with a human being. Are you one?"

If you grew up how he did--the phrase "The White man is the devil" isn't unreasonable. Later in Malcolm X's life, he asks some older women in Harlem, "Has a White man ever been good to you?" and they respond "No" to their own surprise. Were they racist? No--they lived in a racist society.

I am extremely impressed with Malcolm X. He was always forthcoming and strong in his opinions and manner of expression, but here he shows a willingness to deny his previous beliefs in light of the actions of a man he once idolized.
