Gracias Drizzlet.
I was on Cape Cod during this game, remember my father, who played professionally in Italy, listening to game on shortwave radio on picnic table in back yard telling me what was happening. The following Sunday we viewed final with Brazil on closed circuit in Boston Arena. Great memory from my childhood.
Let me add that Germany has also had great technical players as well Beckembauer, Muller, Mathaus, Klinsmann, Sammer, Littbarski, Klose, to name a few but Italy and France emphasize the technical aspect more, specifically Italy who are good both technically and tactically. The Italy problem for Germany is puzzling, they have more luck against France who aren't as astute tactically as the Italians probably.
watch the game closely...most neutrals commenting on the game noted the horrible fouling by Italians one of which led to Beckenbauer having to play the game in a sling. There were many flagrant fouls by the Italians . so if that is 'technique' we have a different understanding of that word. Germans were also exhausted by tough round against England in the QF which went in to extra time. Another factor you fail to mention.
Yes those are fair points, especially foul on Beckembauer, but what struck me the most was W. Germany's failure to put away countless chances in the second half, this does not seem to be result of fatigue, but poor finishing. Of course in OT both teams were exhausted and that is why 5 goals were scored. I said Italy soccer is BOTH tactical and technical. The hard fouling is part of the tactical, admittedly an ugly side of Italian football of yesteryear.
@CraxiProfessional did Stielike break one of the Italian player's clavicle? wasn't the first time Italians distinguished themselves in these black arts. The game against Spain in 1938 WC under Facisiti Mussolini's watch has gone down in infamy for its horrible thuggish tactics by the Italians: two Spainish players had to be carted off the pitch on a stretcher and into the hospital. USA McBride had his nose busted against Itala in 2006 by deliberate elbow.

Over the last 54 years,Germany has always had the best looking style of soccer,to where there style is idolized. Its adamm shame that the germans seem to have there heads played with by the italians that has now become acommon thing . What the germans need to do is beat italy 5-0 or better yet 8-0 in order to get there heads screwed on straight , otherwise the italians will always win with there defense and mind games . Italians have the biggest mouths in soccer, there the ones who need a lesson
Italians may have the biggest mouths in soccer but they also deliver the results at both national and club level. The Germans although very successful as well don't have the tecnical and tactical ability to beat more skilled opposition in big games, ie, against Italy, Brazil, or Argentina. The record proves this. I also don't think there style was ever idolized except for period in 70's with Beckanbauer and still lucky to beat Holland in 1974.
You have some very good points , the amazing fact , is practicully every [not all ] but most of all world cups and euro cups features Germany easily breezing thru there opponents. sample 2006 , Germany had the most enjoyable time in that world cup with these atrractive Boomer-ranging goals . I knew beforehand if italy were to stop there mid tournament struggles,by catching a break [ austraila] , then they would makea run for it and did ! They only win from learning close elimination mistakes .
Yes this is true, Germany are the most successful national team in Europe overall due to their athletic preparation and will. Italy need a crisis to bring out their best as illustrated by their victories in 1982 and 2006 following domestic scandals and they need to save face. Both are always strong favorites in any World Cup and we will see this next year, provided they qualify, and if they meet yet again for another classic, maybe the best rivalry in World Soccer!
