How can they possibly cast a blonde Laura?? Immediately, that calls the entire movie into question. Put her in a wig or dye her hair, if you must cast this actress - yikes!
This was such a stupid movie. Laura as a blond with short hair (These Happy Golden Years - her hair was very long and brown and she never would have worn it looks and scraggly). Big man's hat and riding not-sidesaddle-never happened. She's doing all kinds of man stuff - Ma never would have allowed that. TOTALLY off character. Just a really strange film.........
Um...Laura wore her husbands clothing in latter years....She rode a horse "not-sidesaddle" when she was younger with her cousin....Ma allowed all kinds of things including Laura helping Pa with the harvest when it was unheard of for a girl to do that sort of thing.
Side Note: Does anyone know of any GOOD Laura Ingalls Wilder show/movie portrayals? I have yet to find any that are even close to accurate.
The show was completly off for plotline..for characters it was accurate in the beginning of the series. If you watch the very first episode it was accurate and how they lived. This movie not at all and the way characters look?? Whoever casted the actress to play Laura..obviously had no clue. I thought Melissa Gilbert was perfectly casted, she looked the part and played the part. Melissa Sue Anderson as well played a great Mary.

Your right, some of the main characters in the tv series did not even exist. And no havn't seen an accurate series or movie on Laura. Melissa Gilbert is more what I pictured Laura to look like but thats about all that is close.
The actor Charles who played charles was good and looked realistic to the pictures in contrast to Michael Landon. Michael Landon played a very good Charles despite he was to good looking for the role and the plotline was off. Other then that the television show did not fallow the books-I'am not denying it other then the pilot episode. He just captured and depicted the Ingalls characters better in the first season then this movie.
She has inspired me to write about my own story. So, on my next birthday, the 16th of September, I'm going to start a journal! RIP Laura, Almanzo, Rose, Pa, Ma, Carrie, Mary, Garce,baby wilder,Freddy, and all the other wonderful people! See ya'll in heaven!

Laura states many times in the book that her hair was brown and how she envied Mary's blonde hair, yet they gave her blonde, somewhat SHORT hair! The beginning scenes where she's horseback riding in a man's hat- she would have been appalled. There was no attempt to be faithful to the book at all.
Good movie but a bit of a sell-out. I have a digital copy of Laura's earliest photograph. This actress is MUCH better looking. Apparently the producers thought that the story wasn't good enough on its own. They had to add some eye candy.
I like Meredeith Monroe's acting..But I admit not to like her as Laura Ingalls Wilder. Laura was very different from it is portrayed in this movie. And, it is not Laura's true story as it claims to be.
