@zawette This is just a physics demonstration, which doesn't test the Wii's graphical capabilities, or anything else for the matter. Take a look at Super Mario Galaxy if you want to see a better effort towards presentation.
@zawette I feel sorry for you, cause your not a true gamer. I have a ps3, and the wii, and yes the wii's graphics dont compare to the ps3 or the 360, but there is one game that is coming out on the wii that looks absolutely stunning, and looks like a 360 or ps3 game. Its called The Last Story.
@lordrath2000 Yeah, i can see where your coming from that, it's really graphically impressive for a wii game. still, it doesn't compare to 360 or PS3's graphical capabilities.
@SBWaffelmann That's the GPU's job. The CPU handles all the physics. Had Ubisoft decided better graphics, it could've worked without any more of a performance drop, but shadows on all these objects would've been too much. The fact that they're all getting shaded is insane enough. Given more time, you could've had better textures and possibly even specular/bump mapping working at that rate.
it's not this! you have to find elebits, little creatures that hide behind and underneath objects, using a gravity gun. there's some good puzzle solving in it as well. you can check out my other levels of this game, especially the av room one.
I keep considering buying this game, but the lag in later levels seems to be an issue. Awesome physics handling, though. Hopefully a sequel on Wii will emerge that will address the problems in this one.
lag is apperant in the later levels which stretch 20 minutes into 35, but the level is (surprisingly) still playable. the only planned sequal is one on the ds, but it's an adventure game.
they should allow the physics framerate to be fixed to the game one. for instance, a large clutter of objects drops the game's rate from 60 to 45 thus slowing down the whole game. if the physics let up on trying to maintain 60 fps and just runs at 45, the game won't slow down, but it might cause strobing...
And also, half-life 2 still looks better than most games today! Even on an older card. I have it on my X1300, max settings 60fps, dips at big action parts-why not port hl2 to Wii? Just leave out hdr light, AA etc. That'd be cool. And unlike the 360/ps3 version put deathmatch multiplayer.
360 physics are decent-bc theres not a big demand for physics realism-gtaiv lags! PS3 can have really amazing physics
X1300 has a fillrate of 1,800 million pixels a second while the wii has a fillrate of 1,944. sorry to say this, but the wii can handle better graphics than your computer can!
HDR lighting and anti aliasing has been done on the wii already (brawl). the problems with half life goes back to the physics engine not having great animations. while the game runs in 60 fps, objects restricted to the physics engine only run at 30 fps.
I know my GPU is old. You could get an X1300 for like $30 now. Didn't the X1300 come out over 5 years ago? Of course, the Wii also has some GDDR3 memory too right? So I'd being surprised it didn't outperform an old video card. Strange that Wii is so pricey..i can see the next nintendo system being amazingly powerful w/ all the $ they're making.
Bottom line is devs need to stop slacking on wii and PS3. If 360 keeps it up we'll be playing FPS's for the next decade.
Remember that Oblivion was made so that even ppl w/ out good pcs could play it. A GPU from 5 years ago could run oblivion, bc they appealed to a mass audience.
Also, Wii can look good-depending on DEV talent! Look at Smash bros, and Galaxy-but it can also be bad in so many ways...spiderman 3, Hulk-look like n64 games err..
custom shaders. nintendo's forcing all developers to use custom shaders for the wii, as they did for the gamecube. because of this, each game has to be made with a shading program specific for the wii. third parties that don't have enough time or will power to make this shader as perfect as possible makes the game end up looking terrible.
the shaders and effects in lostwinds, a 43 megabyte wiiware game are better than those found in many rushed games on the wii.
Stuff like this makes me want to dismiss the idea that the Wii is using a PowerPC 750CL @ 739 MHz as been rumored. God I wish Nintendo would just tell us the Wii's secrets.
8 pixel pipelines instead of 4 - the wii's graphical fillrate is 2 billion pixels/second. since 480p only requires 300,000 pixels to be used for the display, the extra pixels can be used for transperancies, special effects, great textures, etc. the xbox 360 only has a 4 billion pixels per second fillrate and is required to output 3x as much detail for HD.
the wii also increases the RAM from 24MB to 91MB (3MB used for textures) and the TEV allows for custom shaders (like in super mario galaxy)
This game kicks ass. If it wasn't for the lag in the big enviroments, it would be perfect imo. I was very blown away by the physics, just because I didn't think the Wii could do this kind of stuff.
you need to collect little creatures called elebits. elebits like to hide behind and underneath objects. in the main game mode, you're gravity gun can't pick up much things. elebits raise your wattage, which in turn will "energize" objects. elebits that pop out of energized objects power-up your gravity gun so it can lift heavier things. there is also a time limit and a limit on objects you can break.
the power-up shown above (vacuume laser) lifts up objects to find elebits hiding underneath.
Adding parts to the Wii would be quite the effort, like a different CPU or physics coprocessor, not to mention the APIs to make and test just to get it all to run together O_o
Wii is a pretty weak system but for 480p graphics it's actually decently equiped for the job, and if it really is just upscaled GC hardware, I'm very impressed with what it can do and display.
it is upscaled from the gamecube, but it's more than just overclocked. the gpu is roughly 3x better from the gamecube, the CPU 1.5x, the memory 3.7x, the game disk storage capacity 4x, and while still retaining the same loading efficiency as the gamecube.
half-life 2 on the original xbox had to run on a scaled down version of source (SOURCE, not havok, its based on havok but its much better) and the PC one was fine, these physics are good though, physics depend on the game not the gamestation
the atari 2600 was capable of physics as well, but interactions on a massive scale like this one requires more than a graphing calculator to compute. half life 2 had great physics, but physics in elebits are more polished and smooth (60 frames per second instead of 30) and are able to do much more collisions (though not having hundreds of objects interacting was a developer choice for half life 2).
I always thought Elebits had pretty good graphics.
Either way, my main problem with the physics in it is that gravity seems to be too weak in it, even at 100%. I'm hoping Brawl did a really good job with its physics.
i constantly keep hearing that. really, when you have large objects, it looks like they're falling slower than other objects. truth is, they're falling just as fast as any other object in the game. in real life, larger and heavier things don't fall any faster than smaller, lighter things. in fact, the extra surface area can SLOW DOWN the object because of air resistance.
brawl's not doing anything fancy with physics. it's good for a fighting game, but it's nothing close to elebits.
Oh no, I know they fall at the same rate, I'm just saying that they almost seem to fall in slow motion compared to other physics engines I've seen, like Half Life 2's. I'm thinking it's more of a framerate problem though, because it can be very realistic then be all slow the next minute.
Nice videos, by the way. I'm glad someone else is interested by these things besides me.
well yea, the larger levels with houses and big stuff tend to have way more objects than smaller areas with small objects. but some people think that a house should fall at blinding speeds, then look at elebits and say it doesn't look real.
half life 2 is great, but the interactions are kept to a minimum, and it's not nearly as smooth in animation as elebits is.
check out my newest elebits video, i think you'll like it :)
not multiplayer online, but level/screenshot sharing. you can make a level like this one and send it to your wii friends (that's right, you don't need a seperate friend code!). however, the CONSOLE won't notify you when you get something new, and you can only send the screenshots and levels to people who have the game.
now the graphics technically if u look closely might not be "next-gen" but the physics make up for it
my point here is, tht if u just focus on the graphics thn it will be a great game BUT youd prolly grow tired of it in the long run, but if u hav okay graphics and have great gameplay(physics etc.), thn u hav a better game
btw i hav a question, Mario Galaxy has some mind-bending gravity effects, wat engine is used there? is it Havok?
havok is too popular. it's animations just aren't smooth enough to be considered "highly realistic." super mario galaxy's engine is unknown, but it should be said that gravity manipulation isn't hard to do: sonic adventure 2 had gravity manipulation and it was made over 6 years ago! collision detection with multiple objects is what causes framerate drops.
ps3: exclusives go down the drain. at least wii's AAA titles stay AAA when they're released. and at least the wii's best games aren't on a cheaper console (COD4, oblivion, etc.)
xbox 360: $100 for a wireless wi-fi adapter that's included with the wii. $50 a year for online and a bunch of darth vader imitators/mindless flaming through voice chat.
i found the gameplay fun in the later levels, but in the final ones it was just ridiculous. the framerate extended a 20 minute level to 30 minutes.
good graphics? oh please. developers were too lazy to make games with real wii graphics. now, we have medal of honor, metroid prime 3, super mario galaxy, etc. "smoothing the items" make no sense, and taking away the textures just makes things look more bland.
Yep, If you zoom in on LoZ:TP the textures are horrible but farther away they look awesome(Go to the beginning of the sand temple and zoom in on a wall...). Same with Galaxy. But, thats the price you pay to keep PS2 graphics...
Though the gameplay of Zelda & Mario are far superior than that of any PS2 game(Well not so much PS2 graphics, i bet Nintendo couldnt do a cutscene like the Kingdom Hearts final cut scene/preview of next game)
ps2 games did look rather bland. but even by the wii's low standard, super mario galaxy and twilight princess look by far superior.
super mario galaxy's ending and opening cutscenes are pretty detailed for a wii game rendered in realtime. kingdom heart's cutscene was pre-rendered and moved as a movie file. sonic and the secret ring's opening sequence also looks better than the kingdom hearts ending. heck, melee's opening looks better!
SMG has graphics AND gameplay, not like some games on PS3 and the like...
Though it does prove that graphics & gameplay make an excellent game! Go pop in Wii Sports and youll probablly only wanna play at most an hour...but then pop in Galaxy and youll probably play for a lot more than that!!
IMO, graphics have 3 levels of rank: interfering, bland, and realistic/stylistic. if graphics interfere with the gameplay, then that's a problem. if graphics are bland, then the game's playable but the presentation is very poor. if the graphics are stylistic, then the game appears interesting. for example, halo 3 and ratchet and clank future. there is no "better," just one game aims for realism and suceeds while the other aims for a particular style and suceeds.
IE: specular highlights are areas of white on objects. mario's look would be very bland and ugly without specularity.
many sport games attempt to use motion capture for human motion, resulting in jerkiness and repetitive motion which ends up making running look WORSE than say, mario running in super mario galaxy.
Where are the shadows for the objects? I'm a Wii fanboy but secretly I wish Nintendo could've at least upped the hardware specs a little bit. That aside, I can't wait for hardcore games to come out.
elebits didn't use the wii's GPU all that well. super mario galaxy and super smash brothers brawl all look better than this, and yet they all run smoother as well.
this video is solely for the wii's best in physics. as far as graphics go, well, we'll see when brawl comes out ;)
there is a different sound for each different object and they are cued as soon as an object slams into another one. unfortunatelly, i only use 2 different types of objects, plus the sounds of slamming doors and the vacuume laser.
the game's called elebits. you basically have this gravity zapper that picks up elebits and grabs objects as well. the elebits hide under, in, and around objects and you have to find them. you get power ups like a homing laser that locks onto elebits as soon as you pass them, and a vacume laser which sucks objects into this ball while the elebits come strait to you.
the game gives you a number of "units." each block takes up 2 units, and the room itself takes a certain number of units. by seeing how many units i used and subtracting the number of units needed for the room, i can find out how many objects are in a room. as for the room itself, i have to count it.
what a stupid game. what the fuck is our mission or goal in this fucking game? flying and boucing stupd boxes? is our mission to watch them or make a stupid vacuum sound make them mounce like crazxy? why do they make that sort of stupid games?
no, the mission is to collect little creatres called elebits which hide under stuff, throw things at you, and run away from you, all under a time limit.
this is just a physics demo. putting elebits in this level would ruin it. check my other edit stage if you want to see traditional edit-stage gameplay.
i was being sarcastic. lets see some real games use real physics. hows it next gen if previous gen consoles can handle the same physics and graphics (better)
oh, sorry, i couldn't tell the difference between your sarcasm and sony fanboys :D
you know, ever since i made these videos, i haven't heard "wii has bad physics" at all. instead, i heard "xbox 360 and ps3 are still 10-20x more powerful than it"
i dont mind the wii being less powerful or anything but all the games on it are just plain bad and aren't worth my time. Even mario galaxy, mario kart or ssmb won't change my mind about the wii (ok maybe ssmb will) but the only games where developers dedicate their hard work and time are in the ps3 and 360 games. Im no fanboy, i just hate MS and i think the wii is a waste of money considering my mom bought one and nobody plays its anymore.
i do agree that developers aren't using the wii's potential. the wii is a way to make easy money, not a revolution in gaming.
smg, metroid prime 3, and ssbb (brawl, not melee) are made by nintendo. quote from the team behind mp3: this game is not for your grandma! first and foremost we are here to make a game for our fans.
game developers treat themselves like artists and try and paint the most amazing painting that stands out. i like to play games where the developer thinks of something new and gives me a good gaming experience, i don't enjoy playing "fun" games or games for casuals where you play for a day and never touch it again... not to mention i rather spend 60 bucks on someting like MGS4 than 60 bucks on red steel. my opinion, i know a lot of ppl that love the wii. its just they dont touch it anymore.
you're true (and don't worry, i'm not a fanboy, i just like mario). i think games like this are good in a different way than the mainstream of games. it's nice to play it once in a while.
thsi is weird. posting like msn. i just dont like how nintendo isnt pushing the wii to have good games like FF or any serious games that attract the 14-30 age group. no offense but most my friends with the wii dont even play it.... so (btw im no sony fanboy, i just hate microsoft) imo i believe $500 is more worht spent if you play the games and enjoy them than $300 for a system with minigames and fun games.
games like twilight princess and metroid prime 3 are must haves for sure (from nintendo). heard scarface and godfather were good too. no more heroes is an online game... and games like sadness just look awesome. manhunt 2 isn't releasing for a while though.
summer is always the worst for videogames. all the games/consoles get released august-december for the holiday rush. i only play VC games and stuff on the wii, but i'm not focussing on any game particularly.
I own godfather and scareface and they are best on Wii the sad part is, that in terms of graphics it is just the xbox version ported over so its not even a wii build. :( the controls in godfather are so awsome.
anyway, i'll tell you one thing i hate about the xbox 360: the wireless internet adapter costs $100. if you're gonna go online wirelessly, you're gonna have to pay. nintendo AND sony put wireless adapters in their consoles, and the wii only costs $160 to make (just the console, not the other stuff in the wii bundle).

havok is too popular. it's animations just aren't smooth enough to be considered "highly realistic." super mario galaxy's engine is unknown, but it should be said that gravity manipulation isn't hard to do: sonic adventure 2 had gravity manipulation and it was made over 6 years ago! collision detection with multiple objects is what causes framerate drops.

The wii is a very SHIT console :(
Pliskin91 4 years ago
LOL and the PS3 is? The recycled console only boasting better graphics and a disc player which won't be fully utilised until 2012?
Oh, wait you're probably an xbox fanboy. Too bad most of their games end up on PC sooner or later.
Just keep ignoring all the credible reviews and follow those other sheep, ya t00l.
hylianloach 4 years ago
ps3: exclusives go down the drain. at least wii's AAA titles stay AAA when they're released. and at least the wii's best games aren't on a cheaper console (COD4, oblivion, etc.)
xbox 360: $100 for a wireless wi-fi adapter that's included with the wii. $50 a year for online and a bunch of darth vader imitators/mindless flaming through voice chat.
i'll make a video about this sooner or later.
mariomguy 4 years ago
GRR! i just made a post about this in a gaming forum. say whatever you want as long as you back it up.
WHY is it a shit console?
mariomguy 4 years ago
The physics in elebits are awesome...gameplay not so much
But get it if you want a $50 physics project
OMGITSJAD 4 years ago
actually, the gameplay is awesome! it's the graphics that suck.
the level editor is pretty neat as well.
mariomguy 4 years ago
The level editor is neat but I only found the gameplay fun for the first few levels...i liked the mission modes even though they made me so mad...
And thats what happens to most Wii games that try to make good graphics by smoothing the items and characters and taking the textures away.
OMGITSJAD 4 years ago
i found the gameplay fun in the later levels, but in the final ones it was just ridiculous. the framerate extended a 20 minute level to 30 minutes.
good graphics? oh please. developers were too lazy to make games with real wii graphics. now, we have medal of honor, metroid prime 3, super mario galaxy, etc. "smoothing the items" make no sense, and taking away the textures just makes things look more bland.
mariomguy 4 years ago
Yep, If you zoom in on LoZ:TP the textures are horrible but farther away they look awesome(Go to the beginning of the sand temple and zoom in on a wall...). Same with Galaxy. But, thats the price you pay to keep PS2 graphics...
Though the gameplay of Zelda & Mario are far superior than that of any PS2 game(Well not so much PS2 graphics, i bet Nintendo couldnt do a cutscene like the Kingdom Hearts final cut scene/preview of next game)
OMGITSJAD 4 years ago
ps2 games did look rather bland. but even by the wii's low standard, super mario galaxy and twilight princess look by far superior.
super mario galaxy's ending and opening cutscenes are pretty detailed for a wii game rendered in realtime. kingdom heart's cutscene was pre-rendered and moved as a movie file. sonic and the secret ring's opening sequence also looks better than the kingdom hearts ending. heck, melee's opening looks better!
mariomguy 4 years ago
Yea, they all look good =/
SMG has graphics AND gameplay, not like some games on PS3 and the like...
Though it does prove that graphics & gameplay make an excellent game! Go pop in Wii Sports and youll probablly only wanna play at most an hour...but then pop in Galaxy and youll probably play for a lot more than that!!
OMGITSJAD 4 years ago
IMO, graphics have 3 levels of rank: interfering, bland, and realistic/stylistic. if graphics interfere with the gameplay, then that's a problem. if graphics are bland, then the game's playable but the presentation is very poor. if the graphics are stylistic, then the game appears interesting. for example, halo 3 and ratchet and clank future. there is no "better," just one game aims for realism and suceeds while the other aims for a particular style and suceeds.
mariomguy 4 years ago
Yea, Art Design seems to beat graphics...
OMGITSJAD 4 years ago
however, it's not ONE OR THE OTHER THAT'S IT.
IE: specular highlights are areas of white on objects. mario's look would be very bland and ugly without specularity.
many sport games attempt to use motion capture for human motion, resulting in jerkiness and repetitive motion which ends up making running look WORSE than say, mario running in super mario galaxy.
you can't have one without the other.
mariomguy 4 years ago
Where are the shadows for the objects? I'm a Wii fanboy but secretly I wish Nintendo could've at least upped the hardware specs a little bit. That aside, I can't wait for hardcore games to come out.
AzWeThInKwEizZ 4 years ago
elebits didn't use the wii's GPU all that well. super mario galaxy and super smash brothers brawl all look better than this, and yet they all run smoother as well.
this video is solely for the wii's best in physics. as far as graphics go, well, we'll see when brawl comes out ;)
mariomguy 4 years ago
this looks astonishing. but the sound sucks ass.
1schwererziehbar1 4 years ago
there is a different sound for each different object and they are cued as soon as an object slams into another one. unfortunatelly, i only use 2 different types of objects, plus the sounds of slamming doors and the vacuume laser.
mariomguy 4 years ago
Wwhat is this game what do you do....i dont get it
cristian9correa 4 years ago
the game's called elebits. you basically have this gravity zapper that picks up elebits and grabs objects as well. the elebits hide under, in, and around objects and you have to find them. you get power ups like a homing laser that locks onto elebits as soon as you pass them, and a vacume laser which sucks objects into this ball while the elebits come strait to you.
mariomguy 4 years ago
I RELLY need this game,Badly!
mark4050 4 years ago
how do you count all the objects? Great video man. this vid reall shows how powerful the Wii's CPU is.
rogeliozim456 4 years ago
the game gives you a number of "units." each block takes up 2 units, and the room itself takes a certain number of units. by seeing how many units i used and subtracting the number of units needed for the room, i can find out how many objects are in a room. as for the room itself, i have to count it.

yes, i was being sarcastic. (isnt it obvious)
KeyFilmation 4 years ago
surprisingly not. sony fanboys do get that stupid...
mariomguy 4 years ago
what a stupid game. what the fuck is our mission or goal in this fucking game? flying and boucing stupd boxes? is our mission to watch them or make a stupid vacuum sound make them mounce like crazxy? why do they make that sort of stupid games?
napalmstrike2007 4 years ago
no, the mission is to collect little creatres called elebits which hide under stuff, throw things at you, and run away from you, all under a time limit.
this is just a physics demo. putting elebits in this level would ruin it. check my other edit stage if you want to see traditional edit-stage gameplay.
mariomguy 4 years ago
The mission is simple...
Play the game, shut up, and have fun...
Or listen to Mariomguy!

i was being sarcastic. lets see some real games use real physics. hows it next gen if previous gen consoles can handle the same physics and graphics (better)
junk56 4 years ago
oh, sorry, i couldn't tell the difference between your sarcasm and sony fanboys :D
you know, ever since i made these videos, i haven't heard "wii has bad physics" at all. instead, i heard "xbox 360 and ps3 are still 10-20x more powerful than it"
mariomguy 4 years ago
i dont mind the wii being less powerful or anything but all the games on it are just plain bad and aren't worth my time. Even mario galaxy, mario kart or ssmb won't change my mind about the wii (ok maybe ssmb will) but the only games where developers dedicate their hard work and time are in the ps3 and 360 games. Im no fanboy, i just hate MS and i think the wii is a waste of money considering my mom bought one and nobody plays its anymore.
junk56 4 years ago
i do agree that developers aren't using the wii's potential. the wii is a way to make easy money, not a revolution in gaming.
smg, metroid prime 3, and ssbb (brawl, not melee) are made by nintendo. quote from the team behind mp3: this game is not for your grandma! first and foremost we are here to make a game for our fans.
if only everyone had nintendo's simple thinking.
mariomguy 4 years ago
game developers treat themselves like artists and try and paint the most amazing painting that stands out. i like to play games where the developer thinks of something new and gives me a good gaming experience, i don't enjoy playing "fun" games or games for casuals where you play for a day and never touch it again... not to mention i rather spend 60 bucks on someting like MGS4 than 60 bucks on red steel. my opinion, i know a lot of ppl that love the wii. its just they dont touch it anymore.
junk56 4 years ago
$60 for red steel?! i wouldn't buy it for 20.
you're true (and don't worry, i'm not a fanboy, i just like mario). i think games like this are good in a different way than the mainstream of games. it's nice to play it once in a while.
anticipating smg.
mariomguy 4 years ago
thsi is weird. posting like msn. i just dont like how nintendo isnt pushing the wii to have good games like FF or any serious games that attract the 14-30 age group. no offense but most my friends with the wii dont even play it.... so (btw im no sony fanboy, i just hate microsoft) imo i believe $500 is more worht spent if you play the games and enjoy them than $300 for a system with minigames and fun games.
junk56 4 years ago
games like twilight princess and metroid prime 3 are must haves for sure (from nintendo). heard scarface and godfather were good too. no more heroes is an online game... and games like sadness just look awesome. manhunt 2 isn't releasing for a while though.
summer is always the worst for videogames. all the games/consoles get released august-december for the holiday rush. i only play VC games and stuff on the wii, but i'm not focussing on any game particularly.
mariomguy 4 years ago
I own godfather and scareface and they are best on Wii the sad part is, that in terms of graphics it is just the xbox version ported over so its not even a wii build. :( the controls in godfather are so awsome.
CallofDutynoob 4 years ago
the wii needs a ground-up shooter unlike anything we've seen before. i hope sadness turns out alright.
mariomguy 4 years ago
well, g2g.
anyway, i'll tell you one thing i hate about the xbox 360: the wireless internet adapter costs $100. if you're gonna go online wirelessly, you're gonna have to pay. nintendo AND sony put wireless adapters in their consoles, and the wii only costs $160 to make (just the console, not the other stuff in the wii bundle).

Cartoon Graphics=Fun...
I like playing Cartoony graphics, their mouths don't move badly!!!
And if games were only for hardcore gamers, then, well... we would have no new gamers!!! You never start out as a Hardcore gamer!!!!
