many miss the point. Each soprano brings a different timbre, a different gift. Ms Pons had a brilliant career and was charming and slim and made movies. she brought opera to the masses... think of that... she was wonderful in her own right and amazing vocally ... How many in a million can do what these ladies do? How many..... We all have our preferences, but this kind of singing is a rare and ravishing and sensual.
I agree ebaytimr - it's very important to know which one: the "ah" or the "oo". You are right also about her perfect breath control. This piece is one of the most beautiful and hard to perform ever.
Pons is the first opera singer I ever heard (on recordings) so I have a special affection for her and her voice. But since that time, many decades ago, I've heard such great coloraturas as Galli-Curci, Tetrazzini, Melba, Sembrich, Sutherland, Sills, Peters, and many more (as well as singers of other voice types, of course), and can no longer call Pons the definitive coloratura, great as she is. However, she will always hold a special place in my heart and mind.
She sings on "ah" and not "oo". That's one reason why she sings it better than anyone else. The song is pure melody, and should be sung as such; not over-sensualized and careless as some have sung it. She shows perfect breath control, and looks like a little doll. Fleming or Moffo don't come close.
This is the one that does it for me, every time. Sometimes you hear a song and it moves you so much you just want to hear it over and over. What a gift!
Pons' legato was never perfect although better in her early years. By 1947, however, the line was often broken and the aspirates intruded more frequently in her scales. As she grew older, her coloratura also became less accurate. And Pons was not known for emotional expression or profound interpretive skill. Despite all of this, I find many of her recordings reveal tonal purity and beauty, clear diction, a sense of style, much charm and taste, gentle pathos, and thrilling technical acrobatics.
Continued--I might also add that her high notes were usually perfectly placed, well taken, and on pitch although she did have pitch problems in later years. A singer of contradictions for sure, but also a unique singer and an endearing one.
The best ever. She makes me weep. It's so beautiful. One can only imagine the hours of practice, and what a good teacher she had. Her breathing, perfect.
Some say she had a "little voice" and compare her to other singers (Joan Sutherland)who had great range, but to me, there is nobdy like Pons. Her high notes are absolutely thrilling and her coloratura singing is like no other.
why not 49? the problem with the modern singer today is that their careers are ended shortly because of a lack of good solid training. She was from the old school. If the voice is well trained, no reason it can't last till 60. But most sop's are now finished after 12 or so years.
You're absolutely right! They all rush to do roles they shouldn't be doing and sound like wobbly old women before they are 30 years old! There aren't any newer singers on the stage today that I'd waste my money on. Give me Berger, Sutherland, Gueden, Nilsson, Norena, Auger, Etc.!
Where are Flagstad,Ponselle.Glad you have Berger listed,as she was as good as it gets. She was intimidated by the great Ponselle, and had stage fright after marvelling at a Ponselle performance.Ponselle encouraged her,and even attended a performance. After the performance Ponselle said to her-Lily,tonight you sang the elle out of Ponselle.

this is in Eflat i think as the top note is not a C sharp but higher than that!

It's almost like a vibrato between Eflat and E natural. This woman is awesome.
