And if anyone here wants to play with OpenVMS without having to get a hobbyist license and either an old VAX or Alpha or emulating one with simh, then go to deathrow.vistech.net and find out more about their public OpenVMS nodes. They have a demo account you sign on with via telnet or ssh (username DEMO, password USER) and play around. So far, the "Gein" node is the fastest.
Nice tutorials...though just for clarity's sake, DOS was definitely inspired (by way of its spiritual descent from CP/M, another OS developed by VMS's creators, DEC) by VMS's commands and directory layout.
I had never heard of Open VMS until about a year ago, I now Administer around 2,000 nodes around the world. Open VMS amazes me in its stability and ease of use every day, I can see why my company has kept the technology around for the past 30 years.
hi, I just discovered OpenVMS after reading a wiki on Mitnick. Can someone tell me whether this system is compatible with current common standards or is it totally specific to some dedicated devices as Apple ??
@b3stbuddy I think he is asking if you can run it on intel hardware. He is using pre-intel Macs as an example of an OS created for specific types of machines.
OpenVMS is/was used on Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) VAX and Alpha computers. DEC went out of business in the late 90's, was bought by Compaq, which was then bought by HP.
OpenVMS was then ported to the Intel Itanium chip and runs on HP Integrity servers.
@aikirich sure its not ia64 (itanium) and not x86_64? I know there is an open source project that aims to replicate vms called freeVMS. It should run on x86, but its incomplete and I couldn't find any binary releases (you'll have to compile it from source).
i like the idea of openvms, just the licencing is a pain, i wish people still wrote code as efficiently as they do here.

@b3stbuddy So he must have missed the part where you told him you were running it on top of a Slack install

I'm Systems Administrator for around 500 servers on Linux and SCO UNIX. I wish I had just 1 VMS machine to administer. VMS sets a high standard.

Lol 8.3 on alpha - love it. No youtube videos depicting AIX, though.

wow...a VMS tut. on youtube....just wow. :D
Nice to see that VMS is still alive. You use it at work or as a hobbyist?

I'm one of the OpenVMS admins at work (8.3 on Alpha). The videos are from 7.3 running on a VAX emulator.
