Hey guys, I'm 15 and if you have any spare time please check out my guitar covers on my channel. It sucks advertising like this but it's the only way to get exposure thanks if you check them out :)
@thevidosband Ever listen to the Grateful Dead, Tangerine Dream or Miles Davis? Their songs sometimes topped out at 20 or 30 minutes. Expand your horizons.
@fuzzballzz36 Yes, and I love the Grateful Dead. I wasn't saying that 6 minutes is long, it's a perfectly fine length for a song. It just seems to me that this song is slightly repetitive and therefore doesn't need to be that long; that being said I can appreciate the fact that this is a classic song and an incredibly influential album, something that holds true to this day. In fact, I even list the Underground as one of my influences in my songwriting.
I apologize for offending anyone with my comment, this is great music that heavily influenced the music of my generation and for that reason I can appreciate the genius of the Underground. I hope that clears things up
@thevidosband I understand completely. The thing is, people like the Dead and Miles used length as a way to develop these sprawling themes...the Velvets took their inspiration more from laMonte Young and Tony Conrad: power achieved through repetition. Listen to something like the lengthy "What Goes On?" from the Live 1969 album or the End of Cole tapes, the repetition of the three simple chords creates enormous, towering energy. I like to work both ways, personally.
You are being held captive by an evil genius and the only way to escape is to try to attract attention outside by banging on the piano as hard as you can
"You may call for help" says the evil genius "But only in the form of a song"
"No problem" you say "I know just the tune to play"
And thus this song was born
Note that the above is a "complete dramatization", which is the euphemism the Geiko ad uses for lying
i remember the first time i heard this song. i was like "wtf is this?". that was two years ago. now i literally find myself singing this is the middle of class. its so uncatchy that it just sticks out in the 1960's music scene. oh btw i love this song now.
May I reccommend the book All Tomorrow's Parties, by William Gibson. Awesomeness. Has nothing to do with the group. Lotsa drugs in there though. Great cyberpunk novel. Gibson is a genious. So's Lou.

Andy Warhol best idea - to get Velvet Underground in Plastic. Worst: to impose Nico to them.

May I recommend the book 'A Pop Revolution, the transatlantic music scene 1965 to 1969' by the invisible man. The author is a big fan of this track.
