Chromate free makes moar corrosion even it is evironmentally friendly and that clear coat makes moar weight how did you said it is less weight in PAINT!? CLEAR COAT MAKES PAINT THICK AND MOAR PAINT WEIGHT!!!
How does using chromate free paint reduce CO2 emissions? Sounds like more environmental psycho babble to me. Chromate free means more corrosion and shorter airframe life.
13.5 gallons less or basically 162 pounds less than before. for all those non pilots out there on a 747 that wont save them anything in terms of being able to take more cargo but i guess it makes sense if the plane was scheduled to be repainted anyway
@sonnylatchstring 35kg might not seem like a lot but that's not just one flight. A little less weight over a hundred flights saves you a pretty substantial amount of jet fuel. And as for the passengers, this one's a freight 747. No fuselage windows and they did paint "CARGO" on it.
@sonnylatchstring I get your point, but think about it from the company's perspective..the save 1 or 2 days in doing it this way, which means lots of $!
@averredude101 The new paint design has 15% less paint in weight. The aircraft will weigh less as a result and can fly without giving out so much fuel
@8justin88 It's a paste chemical that helps to clean off any left over bits of the old paint of. Extra paint means extra weight and extra fuel. Increasing costs. So they apply the yellow coat to cut down on extra paint and extra weight, in turn decreasing operating costs.
OMG What a SHINE :O

So basically, you used a lot of energy taking it off, and putting it back on...why not leave it how it was? WTF!

did they repaint it to make it lighter so then can carry more cargo?

@Garcansdad once they see a obvious corrosion maybe they remove the paint at the corroded part then they paint over the corrode and removed paint

as far as I know the paint can weigh 1-2 tonnes, so 15% could count up to 150-300kg. That for every flight can add up to a lot of extra fuel

15% less paint = 35 kg IMO a lot of fuss about virtualy nothing. Why not let all passengers take a good shit before embarking.

@sonnylatchstring imagine it to fly for 15 years with klm. with one flight a day. and now it weights 35kg less. added up it saves a lot of fuel.
