This is like showing a bodybuilder a picture of himself as an infant and mocking him for being weak. It willfully ignores his years-long dedication to the principle of working at becoming stronger. Western culture is remarkable for having this dynamic of Progress, self-correction, and self-improvement along the lines of philosophical and rational principals.
See what works in the lab. Let the market decide. Etc. Compare to a static, mystical, tribal culture that lacks the experimental element necessary to even discover basic sanitation. This isn't just pro-Western propaganda talking; marvels like the 1893 Exposition (and the fact that future Expositions became less and less racist) provide evidence.
Westerners like yourself who fight racism fail to realize that you are a white blood cell, a sign of health within Western culture. It's contrarian and historically inaccurate to claim that your critiques are somehow coming from outside of the Western tradition.
Bleh, exposing those Americans to people different from themselves and from other cultures wasn't a bad thing at all. How do you know that was meant as a propaganda tool in the way you mention? The worse thing people can do is isolate themselves so they can live in fear and ignorance...

One thing for America bashers, and this coming from a lefty, as true as this may be, it's important to keep American imperialism in perspective. Imperialism didn't start with America, and it wasn't any better before. It was worse. With the fall of the decadent Roman Empire, serfdoms emerged in Europe controlled by a few powerful families, claming divine right, owned EVERYTHING. They divided the people and produced religious and ethnically charged wars, which influenced WW1 & WW2.
I think PINKY is messed up. Typical Red-Wing impression of what is happening. It would take a misled fool to connect the Columbian Exibition with US Imperialism, and a bigger fool to be taken in by this view. It was about the advancement of man, not a show of how America was going to take over the world. It was an expression of the greatness of the USA, and what can be acheived through liberty, freedon, and free enterprise. You just don't get it do you PINKY?
@divinedevine2009 I think Pinky Got it right, I think you got your nose in the Kitty litter getting high. READ History and except FACT> America = Hate = Evil= Satan
the biggest change to Empire might be when in 1913 our nation incorporated a Central Bank aka the Federal Reserve. It lead and is still leading to our dollar implosion.
Maybe look into "Silver Backs" (the original gold backed dollar) and Compare/Contrast to the money we use today...it is a Promissory Note, not a dollar any more. Much chaos from this one event.
It should also be noted that this "ideal city" or "white city" wasn't built to last. The materials were cheap, and the construction was done in impeccable timing. They had no clue as to how other cities were going to benefit and replicate this!
Wow...so much for longevity. I always wondered why Americans thought they were SUPERLATIVE to everyone else...now I know, at least some of it.
Not only is this video informative, it's true. Of course there are points included that AREN'T included in history books (not surprising). Recently, learning of the World's Fair of course the info is just glossed over. I had no idea of the other part that not only degraded the indigenous people, it also expelled lies that could not be counteracted because flight wasn't invented yet. How convenient!! Thanks America...you're great! Just because "our forefathers" were upset with their home country
I for one find pinky's vids so informative, I don't always agree but there's no reason to write so angry comments. I don't see anyone else bringing this points to light. It is sad to see that the most epic moment of that era is nothing more than a nature reserve now. that satue in the lake look amazing.
As a Chicago native, I found this video fascinating, however, as in the video on museums, I found your argument to be overdrawn and overgeneralized at times. You link the Exposition to museums as propaganda machines used by the ruling class to get the labor class to see things their way, but this is highly reductive. TV, newspapers, etc. serve this function much more so than museums, and the power dynamic is hardly as one sided as you imply. Often, the public itself calls for such messages.
The ruling class interbreed to conserve there financial resources. They genetically very different thanand have alot of genetic health problems. Obama is related to the ruling elite and so was bush and so was lincoln all related cousins, related to Vlad the impaler. They are very psychotic and they pass on their personal moral and religious beliefs to their offspring. Which is geared to sociopathy hegemony satinism and domonation. Things that are difficult for healthy people to understand.
I'm afraid it's the Willis Tower now Pinky. We like to call it "Big Willy" or "Big Silver Willy" or any of the other possible variations of that us oh-so-clever citizens of Illinois can come up with.
There was even controversy at the time about the exhibits on the Midway. Some were upset at the lurid spectacle of it; some saw it as pure hokum designed to raise money for the fair, still others saw it as a legitimate living cultural anthropology exhibition. Remember, we're talking about 1893, before mass communications and easy travel to remote cultures was possible. Is someone today who watches a TV documentary about the Kombai tribe engaging in "cultural imperialism" or just curiousity?
The White City was intended to be temporary. The buildings, which looked like white marble, were actually plaster over wooden lathing (with some steel support) and were extremely susceptible to fire. Even had fires not been intentionally started at a few of the buildings during rioting, the entire exposition was scheduled to be torn down anyway. The Palace of Fine Arts was built to be permanent because it needed to be secure and fireproof to hold valuable artwork.
Also, participating countries built their own exhibit buildings just north of the White City (NOT in the Midway) where they were free to "propagandize" their own achievements. Germany had a large pavilion featuring (surprise) large naval guns. Japan built an entire traditional Japanese town on a small island in the middle of the White City. Furthermore, some architects (especially Louis Sullivan) chafed at the Eurocentric design of the main buildings. "Pinky's" claims are a little simplistic.
Communists, they'll never change. "Equal Opportunity, AND equal OUTCOME, at any cost". Those Americans made VICTIMS out of every other nation and culture on the planet, NOT! Boo-hoo, hoo! Stop the lies!
I once respected the Pinky show for the facts while disagreeing with many of Pinky's conclusions. The exposure of this mistake has called into question those facts. You've lost my respect Pinky.
The implication is that the three endeavors were part of a conspiracy. In fact, they were all independent attempts to take money from average Americans by businessmen (and businesswomen). If the net effect was to change America's opinions for the benefit of the elite, well, quit a lucky break for the elite, but despite their efforts, their was no conspiracy to do so.
Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show that preceded the Midway Plaisance. The Wild West show did exist at the same time as the fair. But, it was not part of the fair. In fact, it was a competitor and a financial drain that took customers away from the fair. All three commercial endeavors charged a hefty admission price (which the video fails to mention, but in all fairness, the video did compare them to Disneyland). The imp...
A fine attempt at convincing it was. Pinky's video, that is. But its just as flawed as the supposed attempt it claims to expose. The problems with the video are numerous but can be summed up with the main fact: The Midway Plaisance was not begun until the fair was a few days from closing and was not finished until many years later, when most of the buildings were destroyed and the fair was already long forgotten. But perhaps Pinky meant Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show that preceded the Midway P...
Again, instead of cherry picking what you read and what interests you, read the entire book, the Adapted Mind. Then come back. Read everything. Then come back. There is a lot you miss and don't realize you miss, but you have to read everything.
You have no solid grasp on evolution or evolutionary sciences. Read and actually finish the Adapted Mind. This argument by you is getting circular and ridiculous. Please educate yourself and then come back.
Again, your statements reflects an inept and Flintstone understanding of evolution and evolutionary science. Nobody knows? No, we can trace a timeline of evolutionary changes in us specifically now to specific genes, and this is only going to get more and more thorough, and we can also weigh in how long it takes for a gene to become universal as well. And, again, 15,000 years is a drop in a bucket. In a sense, you are expecting a drop of water to have the impact of a flood.
Are you kidding? It is THE framework that IS the problem with Rushton's work. He has a flawed, erroneous framework.
You are stating that the DIFFERENCES do exist instead of looking if the EVIDENCE itself indicates that they exist.
The EVIDENCE does not itself suggest that their are any behavioral genetic differences between the races.
You just want this idea to be true: screw the scientific standards, burdens of proof, frameworks, evidence, etc. Again, that is intellectual dishonesty.
Science is based on high standards and burdens of proof. Rushton fails to meet the conditions for evolutionary adaptation and differentiation. I hold his studies to the same standards that I hold any. He fails them. You are being intellectually dishonest. You shrug off of scientific methods and standards required for theory and experiments and yet state that Rushton's pseudoscience should be considered legitimate. You just want the idea to be true, and screw the facts that say otherwise.
If a scientific study doesn't consider and/or eliminate variables, it cannot be trusted to imply anything. You would, as just one example, need to eliminate the economic class variable. The fact that you will acknowledge Rushton's lack of scientific professionalism and yet state his "findings" are meaningful anyway reveals that you aren't being intellectually honest about the issue. If you read the book, The Adapted Mind, you would be aware of why Rushton's work would be rejected. Read it again.
Rushton's work is a flawed framework with many errors: a failure in distinguishing & understanding what/how evolutionary circumstances, selection, and pressures function, since his first "scientific" race study, he still ignores criticisms of his first study, and shows that he is intellectually dishonest, wanting his race theory to be true, screw real science.
Read "The Adapted Mind" by Barkow, Cosmides, and Tooby -- if you are intellectually honest and interested in evolutionary psychology.
Any evolutionary psychology scientist that studies how behaviors are shaped by evolution will tell you that there is no genetic difference in intelligence or behavior according to race.
The this ONLY would be possible IF the races were separated for millions of years and, *during separation*, each had to deal with *different* adaptive problems that would lead to different mutations (and thus behavior and intelligence traits) being successful.

Mr Tesla was so correct. while this was only a world's fair it was also the indicator of he future wrought. all should be aware of the magic it was cause it described the next century and from this we should see that the future is electric.
that was so fun,you presented that well.Gateway to the ghetto thats funny.I thought when i was a kid i went to a worlds fair?In ny,no matter. But yea, americanism, thats all this war is,were all over that region, theyve learned to grab at materialism like its xmas everyday, and theyve never even seen santa. My favorite part is that we employ slaves on the bases as in the uae they have indian guys for $3 a day,its appauling. You gotta own a gun, just for sheiets and giggles.
You've actually disregarded the Art Institute, which was host to the World Parliament of Religions during the fair, one of the first great meetings of world cultural understanding in a peaceful way. And people in Chicago do remember it. While I understand and agree with parts of your thesis, I think it might extrapolate too much. Without accounts, you can't really know if people considered these people savages, or simply interesting. I think you might want to do a bit more research...
I hate when people talk about "America-hating". It totally embodies the average Americans paranoid terrorsit-fearing gullabilty. You never hear the French whine about "French-hating" though lord knows they;re not popular.
Most commonly imperialism is understood in relation to Empire building, as the forceful extension of a nation's authority by territorial conquest establishing economic and political domination of other nations. In its second meaning the term describes the imperialistic attitude of superiority, subordination and dominion over foreign peoples.
We are doing both in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sorry for such a blunt reality check.
Ah,the gentle and beautiful always attracts pathetic monstrosities, unhappy infantile losers who see every free space as a horrifying vacuum which must be filled by incoherent expressions of fear and rage.
I wonder what it would be like to be a puppet to such deep stupidity, energized by such powerful desperation?
I would feel sorry for people like anglesforever if they weren't such boring fucking assholes.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow

i bet you feel really brave talking about my baby. but i guarantee that if me and you ever came across you wouldn't dare say that to my face. that goes to show you how much of a coward you are. im not mad because i know the reality of things.
yeah reality is you're a fucking mexican or a spik take a hike & go back to where you came from were tired of paying for your fuckin welfare checks...I aint afraid of you i support that fuckin ugly baby
i notice that alot of the comments posted seem to tie the imperialist actions of a few with the populations of entire countries. i guess its hard not to generalize in this situation.
y2knoproblem, have you also lived in america and if so, why do you feel that americans will never experience foreign culture? is it the capitalism? the media? and what role (if any) do you feel immigrants both past and present play on american culture itself?
Americans are afraid of opening up to other ways of looking at the world. Just look at the hate surrounding the question of religion -- and that's relating to other Americans!
Americans are programmed by tv to "accept-but-laugh-at" all things, which is just a "cosmetic" acceptance, not involving any sort of thought.
It's also a shallow acceptance, that makes them feel tolerant; but if faced with an actual issue, they can't handle it.
So... the USA is the only country in the world without the right to expand? I mean, every nation in Europe had its turn at it. And many nations in Asia have done it.
I think the USA is using its territory very well. I like the way history turned out. And I say that as a Canadian.
I'm guessing you would be singing a different tune if China was to invade Canada. I mean sure every other country has had its turn to expand, doesn't China?
Nope. The world is settled and firm and borders should remain just as they are in North America. The age of expansion is over. Losers of history have to accept that.
What seems missing in AlbertaGamer's comments is any sense of fairness, and the virtue of simply leaving people alone to sort out their own destiny.
We in the US collectively act as though no-one else's rights matter, and I'm surprised to find a Canadian pushing our car on that.
Just because "everyone" has been imperialistic, is no reason it's a good thing. Humans have limitations, and the sooner we start to work with and within them, the better.
You're insidious, and hypocritically look down your nose at a system that allows you the freedom to sneer at it... nothing better than a posse of modern-day Tokyo Roses...
Dear sourmanofcoal, I belive that juventes meant that america was discovered by the native americans, not beeing white doest not take away your ability to discover lands. Cristobal Colon CONQUERED america.
You're mistaking "Education" with knowledge, experience and skills. My downstairs neighbors went to college yet they do not display any particular knowledge or proper application of such.
Your spelling is a proper example of this, if you concede any at all.
Fantastic video. I do have a question though: what is so wrong with Imperialism? It seems to me that much of our current level of civilization, knowledge and technology directly resulted from the actions of the various world empires throughout history. If nations stayed static, within their borders, would there have been such growth? If ancient chiefs ans warlords had not conquered their neighbors, would there ever have been nations at all?
I particularly liked the comment that (paraphrasing) we don't need World's Fairs because we have Disneyland now. And certain classes are trying to turn the whole world into outposts of "Disneyland" (think Irag and Iran).
I had heard of the Expo, it truly is not a big surprise, Pinky. Just watching Hollywood movies gives us an idea on how American's can view people from other cultures and nations. Is it something we're trying to grow out of? Definitely, but it's going to take time. After all, the expo was only 100 years ago.
"It is possible to be a master in false philosophy, easier, in fact, than to be a master in the truth, because a false philosophy can be made as simple and consistent as one pleases."
Yeah she forgot to mention how they shoved all the workers and people of that area of Chicago into slums to build it there. Right next to the White City was the "black city" of working class people whose neighborhoods were dirty, poor and polluted by industry. The domestic effects of imperialism aren't great either.
wake up! have u actually watched the video? It is not about architecture. And whrsthfence, man i swear if i hear the word "evil" one more time i will kill my self
In fact, you twit, it was diasterous for American architecture because it propelled the nation to a neoclassical frenzy of building when the most brilliant and original AMERICAN archiect, Louis Sullivan, who had created a new original AMERICAN architecture saw his career fade.
just say it was a White Supramist convention that still exsits today. And the way moctly all americans and europeians and ppl of the world deep down think.
Like every other great power, the US has sought to impose its power, values and prejudices on its neighbors. That's history.
Yet these videos, full of recycled Leftist cant, take every opportunity to denounce the US, and the West, and canonize their foes, no matter what the theme. Such UTTER LACK of objectivity makes these videos valueless.
I've never even heard of this Exposition before. Ironic that it helped make ties with other countries then became a missile range to bomb them o.O! Good stuff, keep it up, Pinky.
And now many folks in power want to become like those hideously backward people. Enlightenment inspired imperialism may be bad, but now the fundies want to use the genocidal model of the Bible to justify enriching their cronies. The Bible was written by hideously backward people. Read it and you will understand.
The Uncle Sam poster is WW2 recruitment propeganda... How is WW2 imperialism? World War 2 started in the mid 1930s Germany was crushed 6 months after the US got involved. I hardly see how "minding your own business until you get dragged into it by a bunch of crazy idiots trying to pick a fight with a country that wanted little part in the war, if any part at all"
The US was at war with Germany from Dec '41 to May '45....otherwise I agree with your comments.
The Pinky show is obviously promoting a Leftist, Isolationist US. It's WAY TOO LATE for that now, even if it were possible at all. The world is too dangerous for anyone to hide in a pacifist bubble.
Finally, linking the Fair and expansionism is an example of Marxists confusing correlation with causation. What evidence is there that US leaders went into Cuba in 1898 with a view to securing their markets? Little, but there is plenty of evidence of invocation of the 'realist' Monroe Doctrine. If US expansionism was born in the Fair, why was they no early US entry into WWI? It took liberal Democrats like Wilson to drive the US into war.
Thirdly, your account of Midway is wrong. In an age of TV and the internet, foreign nations and cultures are only a button click away. Not so in the 1890's. For most people, this would be the only time in their lives that they would meet foreigners or experience their culures. Your denigration of this as a 'side-show' is both demeaning and factually wrong. Please provide evidence that people left Midway with a heightened sense of their own superiority.
Finally, how can you compare a world fair to TV and the internet? Being that you are an older individual, I think you would agree that there is a distinct difference between knowledge (TV and internet) and a world fair (real-life experience).
Wow your really spliting hairs. There is PLENTY of evidence that the US wanted to go into Cuba. US corparations wanted cuba bad. Also there is little evidence that Spain did sink the Maine. The US had plenty of experience of taking land from Indians since the US became a country.
Can you provide any evidence that "people" did NOT leave "Midway with a heightened sense of their own superiority?" Rhetorical question, don't bother answering.
You admit that there is evidence that US leaders went into Cuba in 1898 with a view of securing their markets.
Well made and an interesting point of view. The Midway was a way to profit from the Fair and not much more. It was entertainment and a way to appeal to the common man.
I'm not sure how much it had to do with imperialism, but you're right when you say it inspired great nationalism - which was the whole point of a World's Fair.
I'm so tired of hearing wimpy morons whine about their White guilt.

You just don't get it do you PINKY?

the biggest change to Empire might be when in 1913 our nation incorporated a Central Bank aka the Federal Reserve.

DFDalton1962 3 years ago
The White City was intended to be temporary. The buildings, which looked like white marble, were actually plaster over wooden lathing (with some steel support) and were extremely susceptible to fire. Even had fires not been intentionally started at a few of the buildings during rioting, the entire exposition was scheduled to be torn down anyway. The Palace of Fine Arts was built to be permanent because it needed to be secure and fireproof to hold valuable artwork.
DFDalton1962 3 years ago 2
Also, participating countries built their own exhibit buildings just north of the White City (NOT in the Midway) where they were free to "propagandize" their own achievements. Germany had a large pavilion featuring (surprise) large naval guns. Japan built an entire traditional Japanese town on a small island in the middle of the White City. Furthermore, some architects (especially Louis Sullivan) chafed at the Eurocentric design of the main buildings. "Pinky's" claims are a little simplistic.

Casadh 3 years ago
Read the book. And I thought you said you only read a part of it.
Casadh 3 years ago
This, again, reveals a lack of scientific honesty and standards in what theories you favor and argue for.
Casadh 3 years ago
You have no solid grasp on evolution or evolutionary sciences. Read and actually finish the Adapted Mind. This argument by you is getting circular and ridiculous. Please educate yourself and then come back.
Casadh 3 years ago
Again, your statements reflects an inept and Flintstone understanding of evolution and evolutionary science. Nobody knows? No, we can trace a timeline of evolutionary changes in us specifically now to specific genes, and this is only going to get more and more thorough, and we can also weigh in how long it takes for a gene to become universal as well. And, again, 15,000 years is a drop in a bucket. In a sense, you are expecting a drop of water to have the impact of a flood.
Casadh 3 years ago
Are you kidding? It is THE framework that IS the problem with Rushton's work. He has a flawed, erroneous framework.
You are stating that the DIFFERENCES do exist instead of looking if the EVIDENCE itself indicates that they exist.
The EVIDENCE does not itself suggest that their are any behavioral genetic differences between the races.
You just want this idea to be true: screw the scientific standards, burdens of proof, frameworks, evidence, etc. Again, that is intellectual dishonesty.
Casadh 3 years ago
Science is based on high standards and burdens of proof. Rushton fails to meet the conditions for evolutionary adaptation and differentiation. I hold his studies to the same standards that I hold any. He fails them. You are being intellectually dishonest. You shrug off of scientific methods and standards required for theory and experiments and yet state that Rushton's pseudoscience should be considered legitimate. You just want the idea to be true, and screw the facts that say otherwise.
Casadh 3 years ago
If a scientific study doesn't consider and/or eliminate variables, it cannot be trusted to imply anything. You would, as just one example, need to eliminate the economic class variable. The fact that you will acknowledge Rushton's lack of scientific professionalism and yet state his "findings" are meaningful anyway reveals that you aren't being intellectually honest about the issue. If you read the book, The Adapted Mind, you would be aware of why Rushton's work would be rejected. Read it again.
Casadh 3 years ago
Rushton's work is a flawed framework with many errors: a failure in distinguishing & understanding what/how evolutionary circumstances, selection, and pressures function, since his first "scientific" race study, he still ignores criticisms of his first study, and shows that he is intellectually dishonest, wanting his race theory to be true, screw real science.
Read "The Adapted Mind" by Barkow, Cosmides, and Tooby -- if you are intellectually honest and interested in evolutionary psychology.
Casadh 3 years ago
Any evolutionary psychology scientist that studies how behaviors are shaped by evolution will tell you that there is no genetic difference in intelligence or behavior according to race.
The this ONLY would be possible IF the races were separated for millions of years and, *during separation*, each had to deal with *different* adaptive problems that would lead to different mutations (and thus behavior and intelligence traits) being successful.
This, however, is absolutely not the case.

Most commonly imperialism is understood in relation to Empire building, as the forceful extension of a nation's authority by territorial conquest establishing economic and political domination of other nations. In its second meaning the term describes the imperialistic attitude of superiority, subordination and dominion over foreign peoples.

My own answer to myteetharebleeding's query:
Americans are afraid of opening up to other ways of looking at the world. Just look at the hate surrounding the question of religion -- and that's relating to other Americans!
Americans are programmed by tv to "accept-but-laugh-at" all things, which is just a "cosmetic" acceptance, not involving any sort of thought.
It's also a shallow acceptance, that makes them feel tolerant; but if faced with an actual issue, they can't handle it.

So... the USA is the only country in the world without the right to expand? I mean, every nation in Europe had its turn at it. And many nations in Asia have done it.

Nope. The world is settled and firm and borders should remain just as they are in North America. The age of expansion is over. Losers of history have to accept that.

EuroCntricHipyChrist 4 years ago 2
What seems missing in AlbertaGamer's comments is any sense of fairness, and the virtue of simply leaving people alone to sort out their own destiny.
We in the US collectively act as though no-one else's rights matter, and I'm surprised to find a Canadian pushing our car on that.
Just because "everyone" has been imperialistic, is no reason it's a good thing. Humans have limitations, and the sooner we start to work with and within them, the better.

Finally, linking the Fair and expansionism is an example of Marxists confusing correlation with causation. What evidence is there that US leaders went into Cuba in 1898 with a view to securing their markets? Little, but there is plenty of evidence of invocation of the 'realist' Monroe Doctrine. If US expansionism was born in the Fair, why was they no early US entry into WWI? It took liberal Democrats like Wilson to drive the US into war.
Apparatchik68 4 years ago
Thirdly, your account of Midway is wrong. In an age of TV and the internet, foreign nations and cultures are only a button click away. Not so in the 1890's. For most people, this would be the only time in their lives that they would meet foreigners or experience their culures. Your denigration of this as a 'side-show' is both demeaning and factually wrong. Please provide evidence that people left Midway with a heightened sense of their own superiority.
Apparatchik68 4 years ago
Finally, how can you compare a world fair to TV and the internet? Being that you are an older individual, I think you would agree that there is a distinct difference between knowledge (TV and internet) and a world fair (real-life experience).
eXi1e 4 years ago
I'm torn - some good historical stuff in this but overlaid with a Marxist perspective which really doesn't have much to go on.
Firstly, Libya is spelt L-I-B-Y-A not L-Y-B-I-A.
Secondly, we DO still have World Fairs, although they are more often called "World Expos" - there was on in Australia in 1988, for example.
Apparatchik68 4 years ago
Wow your really spliting hairs. There is PLENTY of evidence that the US wanted to go into Cuba. US corparations wanted cuba bad. Also there is little evidence that Spain did sink the Maine. The US had plenty of experience of taking land from Indians since the US became a country.
gobigorange99 4 years ago
Likewise, ONE is "spelt" O-N-E, not O-N.
Can you provide any evidence that "people" did NOT leave "Midway with a heightened sense of their own superiority?" Rhetorical question, don't bother answering.
You admit that there is evidence that US leaders went into Cuba in 1898 with a view of securing their markets.
eXi1e 4 years ago
Well made and an interesting point of view. The Midway was a way to profit from the Fair and not much more. It was entertainment and a way to appeal to the common man.
I'm not sure how much it had to do with imperialism, but you're right when you say it inspired great nationalism - which was the whole point of a World's Fair.
