I for one love this interpretation, although I think I would prefer a harpsichord rather than a piano. For people complaining about the scoring: this was originally a trio sonata for two flutes and basso continuo, bach and many baroque composers obviously didn't care what people did to their music. I'm sure bach would appreciate this arrangement.
Yes please stop the debate on instrumentation ! Bach is pure genius, and whatever instruments are used, it's beautiful. Plus this particular interpretation is refined, clear, peaceful, I think loyal to the original idea of Bach.
This performance is as genuine, pure and beautiful as they come.
As far as authenticity goes, so what if she uses a little vibrato, has a modern instrument, and plays with ultra-sensitive musicality? She is no musical sleaze! Bach's intent is still clear in this graceful and gorgeous performance.
I do wish people would 'get over' this "grande debate" regarding period instruments vs. contemporary. Bach was truly, in all humility & respect, "cool". He couldn't care less what instrumentation was used to play his compositions, plus he himself was always interested in the "latest & newest" pianoforte, organ, strings, etc.. He was, if I may state the obvious, "above it all"; while the rest of us 'fleas argue about who owns the dog'.
I do not quite agree. Otherwise there would be no directions as for which instruments a given pieces is intended. I think (not an expert at any rate) that Bach had a broad musical thinking and probably broad demand so he wrote for different groups of instruments like baroque violins, gamba viol families, contemprorary strings and could use best flavours of each. Maybe such were his customers. This player did a very good job in pulling smooth even slow attack tone even without a baroque bow!
'The Bach Reader" Bach hated Silbermann's Pianos. We cannot crawl into the head of Bach. I think it is safe to say that when he heard the music in his head it was with the instruments he knew. His hearing was not destroyed by both traffic and machine noise nor was he bombarded with constant background music and iPods. By your reasoning let's do the St Mathew Passion with gazoos and Marilyn Manson doing the vocals both are modern legitimate instruments.
I am so tired of syrup instead of music. Modern musicians have to pour it on when they play Baroque because the modern instruments and mind set are necessary to achieve the perceived sound that Baroque instruments give without pretense. Baroque instuments are naturally soft, subtle and sonorous instruments that the music was written for so no pretense is needed.
What incredibly silly criticisms of this excellent performance. Intonation perfect, and the interpretation very sensitive. Nobody mentions the FABULOUS pianist....those slow starting trills...and the lovely easing of the pulse when a corner has to be turned...and all without ever drowning the violist.
Sounds correct but dead to me. For one thing, the modern instruments. It's a little like playing this piece on a vibraphone and electric guitar. Compare to some of the performances on gamba and harpsichord. But there is something more, along the lines of previous comments. Just not my cup of tea, I guess.
bravo this is really hard to pull off with class and she succeeds. Just by chance i happened to run into another wonderful recording of hers on the label Genuin
err. viola sound you mean? i think the bow and the accompanying instrument affect it more in this case. Kashkashian's recording with harpsichord is wonderful. But i love this too
I don't believe the viola has anything to do with determining this a Baroque-like performance; rather, it is the substitution of the harpsichord with a piano. Otherwise, transcription was a common Baroque practice not only allowing enjoyment by those not proficient in the requested instrumentation but also for enjoyment of those instruments themselves.
Oh I´m sorry. I didn´t want to mean that. I´m only saying: oriental string school is a little bit inexpresive.. i feel that from the most part of oriental players: they play like if the instrument was some kind of sport. Excellent virtuosism. Sound...?

Actually, according to an account in

@violinpluspiano I could not agree more. Bach was above a lot more than any of us realize. :)

This is not syrup. Her performance is very directly dealing with musical matters.

If this was played with a viola da gamba it would sound more baroque, as it should. The voilin sound does not fit. Stuart.
