  • Question: Im using Garageband with a lexicon Alpha very simple set up and I don't think it has enough power for this mic. Any suggestions on what to do? What I can buy thats not too pricey to make this mic work.

  • Thanks it has great sound quality so this should be great for rapping just in case i want to help a friend make it to the top lol

  • whats a good interface for this mic? thats cheap under 200 dollars but really good...

  • Whats the pre amp for

  • This or the AT2020?

  • @jigsawjimas1990 Yup Ima A Hip Hop Artist. I Just Started A New Channel U Should Sub.. Goin To Be Doin A Review On My Studio Equipment And On That Mic In About 2days

  • @jigsawjimas1990 Rode NT1-A ITS CLARITY IS CRISP A BIT THIN BUT U CAN SOLVE THAT IN ANY DAW.

  • Far too close. You are too close to the pop filter, and the pop filter is too close to the mic. The result is that you are still popping, and there is far too much bottom end. Move everything back a few inches, and wind in some eq to kill the boom.

  • @donepearce Since the original recording I've experimented with a number of positions, and agree, I am a bit too close on this one. The thinking was to test the upfront and in-your-face sound of the mic, but you're absolutely correct; backing away from the mic does balance out the bass and provides a more natural sound. Thanks for commenting! :)

  • why did you use the PreSonus Tubepre ?? does it make the recording better ? i mean the voice :P

  • What software do you use? Normally, the NT1-A doesn't make a fuzz O.o

  • The pop filter I got with the NT1-A package is removable.

  • I had a chance to test the AKG P220 head to head with a Röde NT1-A. With vocals, the P220 had a bit more clarity and high-end, while the NT1-A was a bit more "manly" on the lower frequency range. With acoustic guitar, my ear was hard pressed to notice any difference at all. Based on my non-professional quick test, they're very close contenders with slightly different nuances.

  • @Freyelise Spot on! Not really sure why, perhaps it's the Neumann look of the Rode, but I just like the sound of it slightly better than my P220.

  • Why are there a small fuzz? That's unusual for the NT1-A ...

  • @Luka1180 Tube warmness comes to an small prices, but I think it sound great.

  • @TheUnitGaming, there is so many variables in setting up a home studio, the best idea is to Google the net or get some books, just make sure they were published within the past 5 years, because the technology changes so fast. Bare minimum though, get an at2020 usb mic and download audacity and get fruity loops and you'll be rollin

  • can anyone tell me how to set these up? like all the stuff I need to have a rap studio please?

  • What would be the diffrence if I pluged it directly into an usb mixer, wich would be just connected to the computer?

  • My mic is making a noise in the background ?? how can i avoid it i also use rode nt1a (: please help..

  • @MikeDirntBass2468 Well, you have one of the most quiet microphones out there, so your problem is not the microphone, and it is your recording enviroment. First of all, your computer, it generates a LOT of noise, hard drives and processor can be heart in the background if you are near to the mic. Second, your sound card or sound interface, the quality of it determines the 40% more or less of your noise room. And last but not least, your recording room, remove electronic devices, put stuff on it.

  • @TheAlfahDj Thank you

  • @MikeDirntBass2468 you are welcome, try first to get a long good quality cable to to be far from your electronics, and try to put stuff on your room to absorb noise and sound reflection. If that does nothing, then comes the sound interface and preamp, the solution is more expensive, but as everything, there are bargains out there of good usb interfaces and good sounding preamps.

  • @TheAlfahDj What if its my computer that makes the sound?? i can't move it cause than i can't record anything ?

  • @MikeDirntBass2468 If your Computer is making noise(most likely it will), you can just try to use the microphone with a long cable and go to another part of the room. If your room has not a lot of natural reverb, 5 meters will do lots for you. But what kind of noise do you hear first of all, what do you have? Laptop?Pc? Laptops have problems with grounding. I suggest you to buy an extension for your headphones, and a long cheap cable for your mic and do some testing around de room. Take notes.

  • @MikeDirntBass2468 If after all that the noise is exactly the same, then there is only two possible reasons, bad sound interface grounding, or a bad preamp/interface input (maybe a low quality one. The good thing is, you might find for a PC a prefectly good sound card at a price lower than the microphone. Bad thing is, it implies more money. If its grounding, try to conect your PC/Laptop to another power supply or socket, one with physical ground, and also your sound interface if it is external.

  • the pop filter can indeed be removed. there is a big plastic thing you can loosen and tigthen to adjust the positioning of the filter. if you unscrew it all the way the filter comes off ;) otherwise a nice video, and i really agree with you on the weight

  • does it include cables in it, i'm gonna buy one and i dont know whether to buy a cable or not

  • @EmmaPossy THe Rode NT1-A CVRS, or Complete Vocal Recording Solution, includes a 20 ft. XLR cable.

  • @DTinVienna thanks

  • why do you need the mixer?? why not go from preamp to interface??

  • @faultandfracture The mixer was added to the chain as part of a vocal test. I generally use the mixer's USB input to route a skype channel to the input and then the final capture. Works quite well for podcasts.

  • @DTinVienna got it! thanks.

  • Thanks for the review DTinVienna@ I actually ordered one a few minutes ago based on your review. I have a question though. I plan to use it to record a few demos but do think I can use this mic in a live situation? I currently use an EV767 for singing live and I like it alot, but I was wondering if I could use the RODE NTA for singing live. Have you had any experience with this mic in a live situation?

Thanks again for your helpful review

  • I have the Rode NT1-A mic, and the cubase studio, go on my channel and listen to the quality, you maybe don't understand me because I speak Luxembourgish and I rap German:) thank you!

  • do you really need a preamp on recording?? or can you plug the mic directly to the mixer??

  • can i use it on a computer? if I buy a tascam 144mk for example, can I use that to record in the computer.

  • Comment removed

  • fuck adobe audition :D use nuendo ok

  • @beatmaker17 It's Soundbooth. Not Audition.

  • was that adobe audition xD ?

  • Why do you go through the mixer? Doesn't the mic pre have enough output?

  • @Michael55443 It does, but I was also testing a routing pattern for this video.

  • i have imovie, imovie HD, GarageBand for audio editing on my MacBookPro, can i get this microphone and connect it directly? or have i got no chance with the software ive got? because i dont want to buy it and then not be able to use it

  • @ChazikProductions This microphone, no. You'll need a USB connection.

  • why you all place the mic upside down , can I put it normally with this spider thing ?

  • @alnagham Upside down as it's on a boom arm behind a monitor. Yes, you can put it normally in the spider thing.

  • @DTinVienna :D thank you :)

  • @alnagham it's placed upside down for the main reason is to provide a space below the microphone and to avoid obstruction for your script or a lyrics.

  • Awesome Possum.

  • with the rode nt1a i get this buzzing sound and it literaly just wont go away im using audacity with a pv6 usb mixer. any advice?

  • @sargeanto08 Check your cabling.

  • what stand will fit my rode nt1a? i want t be standind while recording.

  • Tried it and did not like it at all. It is not smooth at all especially for female vox. You can hear the the ruff edge cut in his voice on he video!

  • heyy man how do you rout in to the mixer show me plz :(

  • can you just use the xlr to usb connector to connect the mic straight to the Computer?

  • you can unscrew the pop filter from where it meets the shock mount

  • @maxwellmallen correct...but then you're left with this protruding metal flange.

  • Great video. :) Want to know though, are there any microphones with popfilter that can be directly connected to a computer? Or will it be impossible to get a decent audio quality then? I'm just hoping to do some voice acting for game mods so just need to be able to record some crystal clear audio files to use in games and in video editing. (Hope I'm not being too noobish...)

  • Can somebody tell me... I have a Rode Nt1-a but my voiceover recordings really lack something, like the level is quite weak, some way short of the level on this video. Is this due to my equipment? I am simply recording through the Rode Nt1-a >>into a Xenyx 1222fx mixer (with phantom power) >>>with a behringer UCA200 usb interface feeding into the computer. No technical problems, all hooked up nicely, just not really up to standard, do I need that vaccum pre amp?

  • is this better than the rode ntk mic ?

  • Dude! i love you reviews SO much! you're awesome for doing the sacred work!

unfortunately i listened carefully to you records on AT, AKG and Rode and i must say that the AKG sounds a lot sharper and better than the AT and a little bit better than the rode... It JUST sounded like that. after listening to your reviews i went over and bought the P220.. I am so pleased with that, which one of the mics is your favorite... it looked like you were syched at the p220 at first though ;)

  • thx for the audio uploads

  • will the rode microphone, work on a normal pc with a stock audio card?. or do i have to go and buy a new audio drive for it?

  • if you turn the mic the right way up and then point the mic part at your chin and aiming slighty down to your chest you'll get a better full sound. The mouth makes only part of the noise of the human voice. The chest, throat and lips need equal separation so it's best to point it at the chin and down, this also avoid nasal breath sounds too.

Love that you tested them all but still a little confused on why you chose such a long signal path to record them.

  • Do you have to buy an AMP for this or can you straight plug it into your PC ?

  • You're too close! you're supposed to stay between 6 to 18 inches away from a condenser. Just make sure your room is quiet and give it a little room to breath

  • what do you think is better&why AKG P420 or Rode NT1A?

  • HI, THERE, DTinVienna, I have one question?.. yeah i just bought this rode NT1..

can you show me where i can cheap mixer for first time home studio recording ? and any best cheap program for recording ? advice would be great, thanks. Great video.

  • @NguoiVoDanh113 Re: software, Audacity is a free option, although I've never been quite happy with it. Personally, I use Adobe Soundbooth.

Re: a mixer - there are so many out there that it's really quite tricky to nail it down to just one. Give a look to Musician's Friend, as I'm sure they have all the options under the sun.

  • Nice necklace! Great review.

  • @UnstableCore Thanks mate! I was hoping some fellow Hawaii lovers would pick up on the fish hook. :)

  • Would you suggest this music for a mixing between rap and singing?

  • @ThisIsTave Without getting into the technical details, a tube will "warm" your sound. This is particularly helpful if you're recording in a 100% digital environment.

  • @ThisIsTave In effect...how much power you send to the tube. The term overdrive (i.e. distortion) is directly related to this term. Enjoy!

  • What does weight have to do with how well the mic sounds? Seems like a silly thing to complain about.

Maybe you could weld some lead fishing lures on to the end if you think it's that important?

  • @LucidDreamTricks Complaining about someone's personal preference seems rather silly to me.

  • @DTinVienna I'm just stunned that someone would equate "heavy" with "quality". It's very strange thinking.

I'm honestly curious to know why you think that makes it sound better?

  • This is interesting because I have the AKG P220 to record rap vocals and I recorded first on the Rode NT1-A (It's the video on my profile) and music I'm recording at home with the AKG P220 has a way different sound to me and I don't like it! But I wasn't sure if it was the mic or just the plug-ins being used the first time on the NT1-A. Would the P220 give a significantly different sound to rap vocals than the NT1-A would?

  • ok, so im new to recording w/o a usb mic, and in the beginning of your video you showed all the things your mic was wired to and i was wondering if you could only have your mic wired to the audio interface and then wired to your computer w/o all that extra stuff, please reply!

  • @CircuitSetSail Hi Circuit! You are absolutely correct. It's entirely possible to simply go Mic->Interface->Computer.

  • @DTinVienna okay thanks!

  • fether light = bad sound?

  • @mcbublick Mi Mcbublick - no, not at all. In fact, I'm constantly amazed at the high quality sound from an object that weighs next to nothing. I guess from looking at it, my initial opinion was, "This thing is solid, it must weigh a ton," where in fact, it's the exact opposite. Just my personal opinion, but as far as sound quality, the NT-1A blows me away every time.

  • @DTinVienna u just mentioned the weight as a con

  • @DTinVienna thanks!

  • @mcbublick i record with it no it doesnt

  • how do you take the sound from the Rode Nt1a and put it in the video? like intergrating music into a video? how?

  • @BartinixP I record the video with the audio set at 48khz, and do the same with the audio recording. Before the video, I add a "Clap" whereby I can see the sign in the video and audio waveform attached to it, and line it up with the same signal spike in the Audio track. From there, I remove the video audio, and replace it with audio recorded in Adobe Soundbooth (i.e., the Mic Track)

  • i have a question why do you put the mic upside down? does it make any sound difference? i am new to mic's and so far .. i just bougth a akg c3000b and have not used it yet though ..

  • @BartinixP The only reason is that I use a boom stand that I tuck behind my second monitor. The boom comes up and over the monitor, thus I invert the microphone for optimal placement. The c3000b...one of my favorites! Enjoy!

  • @DTinVienna thanks i hope to use it for a school project .. you make awesome reviews!

  • @BartinixP Thanks very much! Please post it as a video reply to this video...would love to see/hear it. :)

  • You have a beautiful radio voice :D With this mic at least. I do however, believe the settings are wrong for the guitar. It's clearly not the sound I would imagine from this mic. But I will find out soon. Cause after watching your .wavs and seeing your youtube review, I ordered it. So hopefully it will be a succes.

Question to you. I bought this for two reasons. Vocal, and Western guitar. Mostly the guitar. I'm using a TC Electronics Twin Impact. Would you add anything to that?

    Great video!

  • i love this guys voice!! thanks for the review, im gonna buy one right now!

  • @feewert42 Thanks fee....please feel free to email Rode and let them know i convinced you! :D

  • @DTinVienna yep, really convinced, its a awesome mic, and i also bough the Allen and Heath mixer, its a really nice mixer for its price, thanks a bunch

  • @BTFlyMusick Hey BT! Thanks for getting in touch. First and foremost - that ART preamp is delicious! I've used one in a local music shop, and it's one of the best sounding pre-amps in that price range I've ever heard. The flexible phantom power is really handy when using various mics. The selling point, to me, of the presonus is the xmax pre-amps, but given the ART in the chain, it might be overkill. Great I/O box though. Great choices all around! Enjoy! :)

  • downloaded the 24 bit wav demos of the mic from your link......... BEAUTIFUL!

great sonic quality (obviously the tube preamp helped) ..... even as a vocal track for a song, I would barely eq n' comp it.

    great shootout dude!

    bye

  • @TheForeteller Thanks very much! Glad to know those .wav files are being put to good use.

  • @ItsKnucklez no need to be that close, I just really like those "in your face" tones a close micing can do. Again, this is the hottest mic in my collection, and can literally pick up a sneeze two rooms away. ;)

  • What exactly does the Rode NT1-A have that makes it better than the AKG P220? I've heard people say that you can't go wrong with either one but I was just wondering why a lot of people say they prefer the Rode NT1.

  • @LinkinParkHotspur Honestly, it's hard to put a finger on. However, to my ear, the Rode simply sounds just a tad bit "brighter" with a bit more high end crisp.

  • I'm getting my first good mic for audio recording. This uses an xlr plug right? so i'll need to get micmate or something right? cuz all i have is a computer. still a beginner

  • @brothersretailers You could go with micmate, or get a preamp, as noted in the video.

  • Hey I was wondering If I could use a 220 with a persona firebox!?

  • @rocketsum I assume you mean a PreSouns Firebox? If so...then yes.

  • What would u recomend to me for rapping and vocals...a Akg Perception 120,220 or a Audio Technica 2020,2035???get back at me asap plzz!!!

  • @AyeTee979 I don't have any experience with the 120 or 2035, but of the 220 or 2020, I'd go with the AKG.

  • @DTinVienna Ok thanx :)

  • which would you recommend? the r0de nt1a or the AKG p220?

  • @Phillygthemessenger Between the two - I'd go with the Rode.

  • @Phillygthemessenger Rode nt1a

  • Thanks for this. You posted the wav files and everything. I ordered it and I was wondering if got a good mic. But I think I made a good choice. Good review.

  • @tionlover you're most welcome. Please let us know when you've done some recording with it! :)

  • I'm surprised that youtubers, filled with hate and angst usually, haven't mentioned the fact that your sole complaint has NOTHING to do with the real quality of the mic. :)

  • @think41c The weight of the mic? I agree completely...my "hey...shouldn't this thing be a bit heavier?" reaction has zero to do with the audio quality of the mic. In fact...based on this Rode, I'm inclined to start thinking, the lighter the mic, the better it must sound! ;)

  • What stand is that.. Is it standing on your desk?

  • @afiqfalif It's actually a boom arm that clamps to the desk. The one I use is the Sinn7 M|Stativ.1 V.2 black but there are plenty of other desk boom stand options out there.

  • the name of mixer?? please!

  • @Snippolo85 Allen and Heath Zed-14

  • @NopeMusic No improvement in performance, it's simply a matter of convenience, as this mic lives on a boom stand I tuck behind my other monitor when not in use.

  • how can i connect it to my laptop what do i need

  • @BLooDYBLOOD95 You'd need an audio interface device with a +48v XLR preamp built in, or an audio interface device+an external preamp.

For this video I used a PreSonus TubePre as the preamp, and a PreSonus Inspire 1394 audio interface device.

  • Hello, I'm recently looking at buying AKG Mic which is to be P220 or P420.

But seen you running from AKG P220 to Rode NT1A now I need to ask you one question and not 21 question as i'm not 50 Cent.

Which one is more clear and precise to you. I mean on your opinion as you have used both, which is better than the other.??????

    cheers

  • @zany4rhymes In a word - The Rode

  • @DTinVienna Thanks so much for the reply. I have the Rode NT1A currently but because thats my second Mic cos I first used SE2200A before this Rode. I use it for just Vocals mainly Male Vocals, and a friend told me that AKG Mics are good thats why I was considering buying one and seen the Perception as there new range I got into getting it but now may be I will have to stick to my Rode NT1A or may be get Neuman or AT as my second Mic

    Cheers

  • Do you know why it makes this cracking noise each time it shakes a bit it catches the slightest bit of air?

  • @TheToxicVoid Yikes! if you're getting a cracking sound every time you move the mic, that sounds to me like a bad connection inside the device. :( You might want to consider taking it back to the shop, or having a trained technician have a look at it.

  • hey there will this mic work well with a firewire audio interface such as maudio profire 610

  • well is it a good pre amp? Do you like it? Does it sound good?

  • what pre amp are you using again, how much was it?

  • @Superman031709 I use the PreSonus TubePre which can generally be found at any sound/guitar shop for around $100.

  • It sounds great. Or rather, your voice sounds clean and constant. Not unlike what one might hear on the radio. Will be placing an order for it today. Thanks for the vid.

  • @toedster Thanks for the kudos. Should you be interested, You can hear this mic in action at my weekly video gaming podcast at stevieftw (dot) com

  • Very excited about this mic, still in route to our office.

We have the NT1-A, plus a m-audio MobilePre USB.

No mixer though, but we're only using it for our application tutorials.

Glad to hear we purchased a decent mic.

  • @RazsterTW It's the best one in my collection. Congrats on the purchase, I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

  • Nice presentation! Might be worth a little more in-depth technical review compared to the other products you mention. The AKG 220 review had a little more technical depth. Nice staging for the video!
