This is probably going to be somewhat of an ignorant question or questions, but I'm assuming that doing reviews about a video game with no footage are ok (I would only show the case of the game while filming my review)? Or do I have to get permission to monetize a video from the developers if I'm showing the game itself? I'm pretty positive all that falls under fair use, but I've heard mixed things on that from people.
@SolidThugKnuckles I would say you can't because the Game Developers, i.e. the Company owns all graphics, material, logos, etc, within and on the game, by the game. Catch the drift? And I've found that even a few companies could sue you if you were to alter, distort, or edit any of their material; i.e. Logos, graphics, content of any nature [pertaining to the game.
They won't bother you, as long as they aren't forced to. The can always claim ignorance seeing as they know videogames are a huge part of YouTube. PLUS It falls under fair use when you put commentary over it I'm pretty sure.
Youtube gives a different explanation for the videogame monetization every time they are asked. It sounds like the golden rule is "im not aware of it till someone tells me otherwise." What I hear is that they basically wont touch you as long as you arent just filming the enitre game unedited, or unless the copyright owner comes knocking at their legal department about it.
I agree this is quite confusing. I suppose if you got permission from the game companies it is ok. I thought I read something about that in the agreement. Is there a difference between partner and this new monetization program? I applied to be a partner a while ago but got turned down, now this new youtube layout said i should sign up...
@lupusk9 Partnership is were you can not only monetize your videos and make money of the ads, but you can customize your channel, promote and sell your brand on youtube. But not actually selling the items, but you'll be promoting them and basically having people go buy them, and subscribe to you and etc.
You can monetize video games if you are given permission to by the developers for example, Terraria is a game that the developers give consent for peopl to upload videos that are monetized from it and gain some money with no reinburstment
@OMGitzCooper I think I've 'earned' about $4.30 with adsense so far. They don't pay on youtube until you produce $100 in revenue. It's going to take me a long, long time before I ever see a red cent.
@lilross2k6 That's what I thought at first, but in going over the youtube contract, it explicitly states that video game footage is owned by the company that produced it. It's still okay to make the video, and to post it. I just believe you don't have the rights to monetize it.
@crossy2478 Well, I specifically found in the youtube contract that you can not monetize video game footage, so you might get away with it for a while. Honestly, If I knew that I could monetize video game footage, I would do it in a second. I used to think you could...and then couldn't...and now I am confused.
@DavidLovins67 well they might get in touch with me about it i dont no but ive been told by alot of people its fine for gamefootage there is no copyright at all but i dont no ill message you if they contact me about it lol :)
