Maynard is one-of-a-kind to be sure, but Bob Summers hits it out of the park in my opinion. I played with Bob in the Navy Band in early 60's in Wash DC. He was a 'comer' at that point and has keep on ever since. He's my favorite jazzer, he's got it all.
Haha they were, lol they did that a lot like on the at the top video they don't show it tho it wasn't on the video but someone explains what else they did lol.
Plus this Mike Abene is a great arranger, composer, musician, producer, and first of all talented conductor by the way. He nows the principal music director of the WDR Big Band.
Bob Summers is the ultimate trumpet advisor whos got a great style of taste and senseability. 4andmore, keep it rollin'. One of the most LA-based studio musicians known to talk and know about. Bob Summers is dreampower. The Fox Hunt reminds me of Jam with Sam (a piece by Duke Ellington).
One of my favorite tunes. So many people only know Maynard from his mid 70's popular charts. I used to be one of those people. Since his passing, and all of this great material that's shown up on the web, I have discovered just what a MAJOR player this guy was. Yes, he was with Kenton, yes... he could peel your face off with the later charts. However, this guy had technique, he could ride like a mad-man which is evident here. We are so lucky to have these recordings..RIP M.F!
Mike Pedicin on tenor, Andy MacIntosh on alto, Badman on bari; Keith O quinn and Larry McCabe on bones; Joe Mosello, Bob Summers, Dennis Noday, Ernie Garcide and Stan Mark on trumpets; Mike Shepard on drums; Pete Jackson on keys and Rick Petrone on bass. Spring tour of 1975.

Aside from the high notes, what a mean jazz trumpeter he is....I love mf's improv trumpet solos regardless of high notes.
