Just finished my marathon of both. Shenmue chapter 1: An experience like no other. Shenmue chapters 2-6: A fun game devoid of the charm of chapter 1. As much as I hate to say this, whether intended by Yu Suzuki or not, the original far exceeded the successor in charm, development, and execution. Great games none the less, yet the ambition of the story as a whole may be too great for a game. Think of the charm Dobuita or the harbor compared to Aberdeen or Kowloon and you'll see.

@ronnipalooza Shenmue 1 has fun jobs (the fork lifting is fun, crate lifting is alas not), and its smaller setting does give it a certain charm. On the other hand Shenmue 2 has richer characters and story; its much less cheesy and the supporting cast is much stronger; Ren, Xiuying, Joy, Fang Mei, Jianmin, Dou Niu, etc. Shenmue 2 is visually an amazing leap over its predecessor, with amazingly detailed textures. But in its greater scale it does lose some intimacy.

@Relugus It's easssy to make money in shenmue 2, the crate lifting sucks but its very easy to avoid!

I heard that Shenmue 1 will be coming to xbox live arcade and playstation network some time this year or next year. I cant wait. It will have higher resolution! HELL YEA

i played shenmue one right after i played the 2nd, i'd say it was ok, the 2nd was definitely way better (PAL version of course for DC) cause the combatis much more faster and you dont have to wait for events

and also, shenmue must be played in Japanese, the whole game features japanese people and an asian culture, not to mention that the original japanese voices sound way better

and also, what we see in this video about the company creating the game, thats common use of instruments and supplies that are required for creating any game...

i agree with it being the best dreamcast and sega game and one of the best games of all time, but you guys clearly havent played mgs 1 2 3 4 wich Are the best games with the best storyline for a game ever made. go ahead and thumb this down but its true.

dont get me wrong shenmue is by far also one of my best games ever, but it doesnt top MGS and some (not all) Final Fantasy games

So if you havent played Shenmue 1 and you dont have a dreamcast will Shenmue 2 still be enjoyable story wise considering the first game isnt on xbox?

@Thomasgraversen Good point, or they could release a high definition remake like Sony did with the relatively new God of War collection. It would be like printing money, that is if theres still a big enough market for these games and people actually bought it.
