When Apple went from OS 9 to OS X, it worked great and computers a few years old could still run it. Apple's software is simply better.
so have you experienced the transition from xp to vista? because i have, and i havnt had one driver problem (i'm talking drivers for speakers, webcam, printer, scanner, phone) and i've got programs that dont' work on xp that work on vista. nearly all of vista's compatability problems can be solved by doing some research on the net. people need to stop listening to others and repeating what they were told, and actually experience some stuff for there selves

Apple refines there new OS to optimize old hardware and Microsoft is just adding new code to do new stuff but not optimizing the old code and just letting it stay there and be messy. Essentially what I am saying is Apple looks at its old code and cleans it up, Microsoft doesn't. Messy code make computers run slower because it has to do more to accomplish a task. That is why Mac OS will run on older hardware than windows. Plain and simple.

I'm curious, but have you tried running Firefox or Safari on your iMac G3/400? If you have, how's the performance? Do YouTube videos run smooth enough on it? I'm actually thinking of getting a used iMac G3/400 from a neighbor to use as a back-up workstation when my younger sisters want to use my modern/faster gaming (windoze) rig to do their online homework/quizzes.
i have a imac g3 350MHz with osx 10.3 and firefox runs very well but youtube videos are quite choppy i think they would work on a 400 im not sure but youtube vids are almost perfect on mine
get one with a higher end cpu just in case. mines still being shipped to me but it has a 700 mhz (top of the line) power pc g3 processor. also panther runs the fastest on these machines and try to max out the ram too

You can get windows running on a pentium 1 pretty easily. I have seen people install and run it on a 25 mghz p1 with a few mb of ram
