I'll Fly Away was a truethful dramatization of the South in the late 50"s and that's why it flopped after 3 years. It hit a raw nerve that Americas would just as soon not have to relive. I'm grateful that PBS saw enough merit to bring closure to all the characters. There were scenesso emotionally moving, you couldn't help but cry. It's unimaginable that people could act with so much hate in their hearts
Thank you thank you a million times thank you!!!!! I've been looking for this show, I LOVED this show and it was one of my favorites!!!!! I'm getting emotional right now...HAPPY TEARS!!!
This song is beautiful and as a fan of opening credits, I think the way the clips of the characters from the show and the clips of the actors turning towards the camera is amazing. I have never watched the show, but I hope it is out on DVD. Picket Fences drew me in to love the series because of the song and the opening credits and I'll Fly Away has done the same thing. Sam Waterson is an excellent actor from seeing him on the original Law and Order. I would love to see this series.
I posted a video of "I'LL FLY AWAY' at ilovemylifesblog YT channel. Feb 1, 2011, I emailed PBS to re-air this series & received a reply Feb 2, 2011: feedback@wgbh.org, 617-300-5400.I posted the reply at my video, my blog & my facebook upload of my video. Partially, the reply included this~ "The program you cited, I'll Fly Away, is not currently scheduled to air on any of WGBH's channels. However, we have relayed your request for WGBH to air an encore of this program to our broadcast manager."
I would pay at least $100 for the series on DVD (not the scam version currently available on the web for $150). PBS please take note - and please show it again! Surely it is at least as popular as Lawrence Welk...
i wish this show was on DVD too. I will *NEVER* forget the episode, based on true events, where the black children were playing in the streets and chanting 'freedom' and the fire department put their hoses on them and sprayed them against a fence. I loved what Sam Waterston's character said after to the fire marshall and the chief of police who ordered it. ''They were marching'''..... ''THEY WERE PLAYING!'' ''well, they won't be playing like that no more!''
@LogicHead and his character's name is also a play on the name of the man who supposedly started the KKK, Nathan Bedford Forrest. Reverse the two last names...and reverse the efforts of Sam Waterston's character in the show.
This was a good american series, I was looking for this one, couldn't remember the title. ...now if I could only find something from Witness Protection with Forest Whitaker...
Am I wrong, but I think Kathryn Harrold's break-out tv appearance was in an episode of The Rockford Files. Her character was blind and someone was stalking her ... I think.
Kathryn Harrold is beautiful in this series.......what a babe.....too bad this series didn't last longer....one of the best TV series from the 90's, ever.....Sam Waterson was great too and so was Jeremy London, many beautiful performances from both of them.........this show should have lasted a good 10 years....it was the "Mad Men" of it's day with it's attention to detail from that era........this should already be on DVD!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember a line at the end of one episode by the maid:
"When Adline was younger she used to sleep with her face to the wall, When I asked her why? She said she doesn't want to see what might happen to her!
My history teacher told me that the Egyptians in the past used to draw a sleeping lion with an open eye and that eye kept open all the time!!!!"
one of the best shows from the early 90's....very underrated.....but this was a great series with standout performances from Sam Waterson, Kathryn Harold & Jeremy London....this show was not really appreciated during it's run, maybe it was ahead of it's time....wish this would come out on DVD.

I agree with LogicHead however, the theme song plus the series stand fair and square on their own.

One of the most underrated shows ever! If it had not started out opposite Home Improvement it would have lasted a whole lot longer than it did!

Thanks so much for posting this. This intro music was so appropriate to the seriousness of the show's content.
The composer is Snuffy Walden; not John Williams.
