The Capital City of Ukraine is Kyiv - article 20 Official English Translation Ukrainian Constitution - you cannot get any more official than that comrade kc4ril
sorry but the correct name Kyiv is written on all the road signs in Kyiv. This Ukrainian city is not Russian, never was never will be - it is Ukrainian and the correct spelling is Kyiv not Kiev or Kiew. How would you feel if I called Now Work or Calcifornication? - give this city which you obviously visited but failed to read the signs the correct title it deserves
Please realize that most of your country speaks Russian and uses Russian as the primary lanuage, and while some signs might say Kyiv there are many maps, tickets, and businesses that say Kiev!!!
I guess it's all a matter of which side of the river you live on, and weather you want to admit that the soviet Uniion is a big part of your history!!!
no...you are wrong....why? because Kyiv is the correct translation from Ukrainian to English...the Ukrainian Govt have adopted and Kyiv and US and other embassies all use Kyiv - its constitutionally official - many people speak Russian ( not pure Russian) but nearly everyone knows and can speak Ukrainian - the country is trying to rebuild after the Russo-Soviet dark years of occupation - so help Ukraine by calling its capital Kyiv...cheeers
@majorgeeek Ehmm.... people in Kiev speak Russian, pure Russian. Government jobs, School and at bazaars or in special occasions we speak Ukrainian. Otherwise Every friend I have, we speak russian..... except one who is a nationalist.
We can all still speak Russian, U.S.A. speaks english which is really Britain's language, they don't complain and are one of the most patriotic countries in the world,
@majorgeeek (Continued) ukrainian is a late mixture of ruthenian and polish, etc. but originally we spoke ruthenian, but we can't speak ruthenian as it is too old now, but ukrainian is actually more mixed than russian as a decent from ruthenian....
Oh and sorry, I may seem like a Russian, but no I'm from Kyiv and am from Don Cossack decent partially... (Kiev)
@Masterfootballer23 you are wrong about Ukraine - Russian language spoken in Ukraine is not pure Russian but varies in dialectical emphasis from region to region - I have heard people speaking half Ukrainian half Russian dialects in many of the eastern regions - very few Ukrainians speak clean Russian language
Ukrainian is not a mixture of Polish and Ruthenian in fact Ukrainian has very few similarities with Polish language - Ruthenian is early development of Old East Slavonic
@majorgeeek Of course, just like Siverian Russian is different from Moscow Russian, and U.S.A. English is different from Britain's english. It doesn't mean we have to remove it from the official language. And with ukrainian it's the same thing, western Ukraine thinks it speaks pure Ukrainian, but that is not even the same ukrainian as eastern ukrainian dialects.
And what does old "east" slavonic mean???? There was one language in the (Kyivan) Kievan Rus..... not western, eastern??
@Masterfootballer23 Russia or Russian policy no longer determines rules for Ukraine - Russian language is different to Ukrainian different alphabets, inflexions, soundings etc so much so that many Russians living in Russia cannot understand Ukrainian speech - there is no reason to officiate Russian language in Ukraine - Russian is not native to Ukraine in fact if you check your history you will find Russian language is not even native in Russia
In the Kievan Rus everyone talked in old east slavic (Belarus, Ukraine, Russia), the old east slavic language
then matured into three languages, Russia lived as the last state from the kievan rus before becoming a country. Both Ukraine and Belarus languages were heavily influenced by Lithuanian, Polish etc.. western countries because of opression, russian was the least influenced because they were not occupied.
@Masterfootballer23 no your example does not support "western" influence - it shows the closer relationship of Russian than Ukrainian to Old East Slavonic which is the language of the Chronicles - Ukrainian language underwent more changes from Old Slavonic at an earlier stage than Russian - Russian Slavs are not native to Russia nor is Russian language native to Russia and especially not native to Ukraine and don't forget Russians have had hegemonious intent over Ukraine for centuries
@majorgeeek I think it all comes down to the view on who the russians are...
If You can tell me your opinion on their origin then... please.
Because I've always thought of the russians as coming from the same Kyivan (Kievan) Rus culture as ukrainians. And what is the russian language then?????
The balalaika is both a ukrainian national instrument and a very popular cultural instrument in Russia.
And what does hegemonious intent have to do with anything, by speaking russian we are not russian....
@Masterfootballer23 Russian Slavs migrated from Kiev State or Rus during medieval period - hence Russian Slavs are not native to Russia - the balalaika is predominantly Russian instrument which originally came from the Mongols - not the balalaika but the Bandura is Ukraine national instrument - Russia has always presented hegemonious intent and domination over Ukraine which included banning Ukrainian language and artificially enforcing of Russian language into Ukraine
@majorgeeek But I am not pro russian, I am neutral on them, but I feel like we are much closer to the russian culture than the polish or lithuenian one. And Ukrainian got heavily influenced by them.
The Russian may have been assholes in the later ages but in the beggining we were all one culture, The slavic Kyivan or Kievan Rus. Now, poland and lithuania have their own culture, not connected to us. And Don't forget that cossacks also were not the friendliest people on earth..
@naoko00o "Siberian" sorry, my point still is the same. Чому вам це так важливо..? Столиця Украiни, це Киiв, а Киiв нiколи не розмовляв на українськой мовi як я пам'ятаю...також в iсторii...
Kyiv not russian Kiev - which is a leftover from repressive soviet communists who ran amuck in Ukraine and cause a lot of trouble ie social engineering by KGB to replace Ukrainian culture
@wg390 the voices of 10 million dead Ukrainians starved on purpose by Stalin and Kaganovich during the Holdomor of 1932-33 cry out; "We are Ukrainian and we speak Ukrainian !!" Vichnaya Pamyat !!
Мы тоже такое сделали. Только без толпы. С толпой - эффект во многом теряется. Собраться толпой - это комплекс Совка играет. И страх. Страх прячется за организационной работой и прикрывается толпой. :)
well maybe it's a new thing...it's great! people will be happier...feel closer..less aggression in the city...Washington,D.C. can learn from them/there are so many angry people in this city!
I want to go to Kiev and get a hug too! I didn't see this take off in Holland, not surprisingly. Then I don't think I wanna get hugged by some Dutch bloke.
Come see the Free Hugs Movement alive and well from around the World--- Australia to Korea to Poland, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, New York, New Foundland, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Ukraine, and much more in the new YouTube Free Hugs Group at www.youtube dot com/grou p/FreeHugsMovement !!!

Here is my history:
In the Kievan Rus everyone talked in old east slavic (Belarus, Ukraine, Russia), the old east slavic language

Both Ukraine and Belarus languages were heavily influenced by Lithuanian, Polish etc.. western countries because of opression, russian was the least influenced because they were not occupied.

@majorgeeek This is a script from the Laurentian Codex:
"Се повѣсти времѧньных лѣт ‧ ѿкуду єсть пошла руская земѧ ‧ кто въ києвѣ нача первѣє кнѧжит ‧ и ѿкуду руская землѧ стала єсть."
Uk: "Повість минулих літ, звідки пішла Руська земля, і хто в ній почав спершу княжити, і як Руська Земля постала"
Ru: "Повесть временных лет, откуда пошла русская земля, кто в Киеве начал первым княжить, и откуда возникла русская земля"
You can see that ukrainian certainly got influenced by western countries.
